It introduced a new enterprise data model that has since gone on to enjoy widespread use as a reference model. Since that time, the author has continued to develop the representation of application problems, both on a theoretical basis using modeling languages and on a practical basis using real-world studies. This has led to so many new aspects that this second English-language edition (the original German version is now in its fifth edition) constitutes a completely new book. The new title expresses the stricter emphasis on business processes in contrast to the previous edition, which was geared more toward a functional structure. This approach reflects the trend toward process oriented structural and procedural organization in enterprises that is currently being supported by new means of information processing. Perhaps the most obvious way in which the second English-language edition differs from the first is in the increased number of pages. This is a direct result of the higher degree of detail and the more thorough problem description presented in the new edition. It is an important research area in operations research. This dissertation focuses on the modeling and optimization of three problems. The first part of the dissertation investigates an important and unique problem in a supply chain distribution network, namely minimum cost network flow with variable lower bounds (MCNF-VLB). This type of network can be used to optimize the utilization of distribution channels (i.e., resources) in a large supply network, in order to minimize the total cost while satisfying flow conservation, lower and upper bounds, and demand/supply constraints. The second part of the dissertation introduces a novel method adopted from multi-product inventory control to optimally allocate the cache space and the frequency (i.e., resources) for multi-stream data prefetching in computer science. The objective is to minimize the cache miss level (backorder level), while satisfying the cache space (inventory space) and the total prefetching frequency (total order frequency) constraints. Also, efforts have also been made to extend the model for a multi-level, multi-stream prefetching system. The third part of the dissertation studies the joint capacity (i.e., resources) and demand allocation problem in a service delivery network. The objective is to minimize the total cost while satisfying a required service reliability, which measures the probability of satisfying customer demand within a delivery time interval.

Book excerpt: Despite the spread of automation and new supply chain management paradigms, logistics remains dependent on a rather specific set of skills and competencies, whether for managerial, administrative, or blue-collar jobs, such as trucking or warehousing. This dependence implies that the logistical performance of businesses, industries, and nation states is strongly influenced by the quantity and quality of the workforce. Insufficient resources of a competent and properly trained workforce in logistics adversely affect the quality of service, reduce productivity in sectors dependent on logistics, and ultimately reduce trade competitiveness. While other interventions that affect logistics performance—such as international infrastructures, trade corridors, regulations, and services—have already been reviewed extensively, this report is the first to cover the contributions of human resources and explore how to develop skills and improve competencies, especially in developing countries. The study proposes a framework for the skills needed according to the logistics activity (such as transportation or warehousing) or the type and level of responsibility. Based on several sources, including recent surveys carried out by the World Bank and the Kühne Logistics University, the report uncovers where the skills constraints are according to the type of job or countries. Findings include that logistics is an industry struggling to hire skilled workers, although with differences between developed countries (where trucker shortages are more acute) and developing economies (where managerial shortages are more widespread). Typically, blue-collar logistics jobs have lower status and lower pay than blue-collar jobs in other industries; they are thus less attractive for skilled workers. In developing countries with a potentially available workforce, lack of vocational preparation for careers in logistics means that less-skilled workers are not easily re-skilled. Logistics tasks at the upper end of the occupational hierarchy and those with high information technology content often require an upskilling of employees to keep pace with new technology. Yet the problem is not confined to recruitment. The surveys point to limited resources, money, and staff time allocated to training, especially in developing countries. Realizing the promise of quality jobs from the growth of logistics worldwide requires a coordinated effort by logistics companies, professional associations, training providers, and policy makers. Through a combination of facilitation, regulation, advice, financial instruments, and land use planning, governments can exert significant influence.

Many other definitions are available but this definition (1) stresses the fact that logistics concerns the strategical management level in the first place because of the over-all character of logistics and its long-term aspects; too long, emphasis has been laid on the operational aspects of logistics. The heart of the logistics concept is an integrated approach where cost savings are identified by considering the total costs of the system. This approach already implies the need for over-all management since the decisions about the different elements of the logistics system (transportation, inventories, facilities, unitization, communications) are traditionally made within different functions or departments. However, the need for over-all management becomes more stringent where the effectiveness of the company as a whole is considered i. e. where the logistics system has to be brought into balance with the production system and the marketing system (e. g. inventory levels vs. production-run lengths and customer service levels) . All elements of the logistiCS system have long-term aspects which have to be put into a planning system, c.q. the planning of a new transportation method, the planning of a new distribution centre.
