This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Africa is certainly not a naturally bounded area so that there are several possibilities for delineating it and concepts about its extent. Wellington* discussed the various possibilities for delineation and suggested that one line stands out more clearly and definitely as a physical boundary than any other, namely the South Equatorial Divide, the watershed between the ZaIre, Cuanza and Rufiji Rivers on the one hand and the Z ambezi, Cunene and Rovuma Rivers on the other. This South Equatorial Divide is indeed a major line of separation for some organisms and is also applicable in a certain geographical sense, though it does not possess the slightest significance for many other groups of organisms, ecosystems or geographical and physical features of Africa. The placing of the northern boundary of southern Africa differs in fact strongly per scientific dis cipline and is also influenced by practical considerations regarding the possibilities of scientific work as subordinate to certain political realities and historically grown traditions. This is illustrated, for example, in such works as the Flora of Southern Africa, where the northern boundary of the area is conceived as the northern and eastern political boundaries of South West Africa, South Africa and Swaziland. Botswana, traditionally included in the area covered by the Flora Zambesiaca, thus forms a large wedge in 'Southern Africa'.

Download or read book The Ecology of River Systems written by Bryan R. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.

Download or read book South African Human Resource Management written by Ben Swanepoel and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book & CD. This fourth edition makes it clear that all who are interested in the sustainability of South Africa -- and Africa -- must put human resource management (HRM) at the very core of the management of organisations generally. The content is aligned to outcomes that are geared towards analytical and critical thinking about the theory and practice of HRM in South Africa. The African context is addressed, and ample information about HRM aspects 'elsewhere in Africa' is provided. This edition breaks away even further from the traditional structure of so many standard HRM textbooks. It challenges a broadening of the 'agenda' and scope of HRM work: HRM is not only about managing employees, but also about managing the work and the people who do the work of and in organisations. This may involve alternative ways of getting the work of organisations done superiorly. This book will help you to apply HRM effectively to achieve its ultimate aim, namely to add value to people, to organisations and to society. This comprehensive book is organised around themes such as: Developing an appreciation for the context of HRM in South Africa; Strategising, designing and planning as preparatory HRM work; Sourcing work talent; Facing the countrys people empowerment challenge; Meeting the reward and care challenge; Handling labour and employee relations challenges; Championing change and transformation; Managing HRM-related information, including HRM and sustainability reporting. Based on most recent theoretical developments, the emphasis is on the practical applications. Samples of relevant documents are included, and an accompanying CD contains a wealth of relevant resources as well as a continuing, integrating case study that serves as a basis for these applications, and individual and group activities. As a package, South African Human Resource Management will be extremely valuable to both current and aspirant managers, and human resource practitioners.

Book excerpt: Wildlife Conservation in Africa: A Scientific Approach presents comprehensive management strategies for the consumptive and non-consumptive utilization of wildlife across Sub-Saharan Africa. It describes African economies that are currently dependent on wildlife resources and prescribes strategies for conserving biodiversity in both forests and animals in ecosystems across the continent. The book covers the history and current status of how Africa's culture, traditions, healthcare and food sources are woven intricately around the local wildlife and resources. It is a necessary resource for researchers and practitioners in wildlife and ecological conservation, but is also useful for administrators and managers of protected areas.

Download or read book Managing Water Resources Past and Present written by Julie Trottier and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-11-25 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multi-disciplinary analysis of the evolution of water politics and policy by an international team of distinguished experts. Water management in the Middle Ages in Europe, its evolution in the USA, the elaboration of the European Water Framework Directive, the British experience of water management, the over-exploitation of African aquifers, and the evolution of the water situation in Southern Africa are all examined. This volume underlines the fact that only an integrative and interdisciplinary understanding can lead to genuinely improved water management practices that will not benefit some social groups at the expense of others.
