Tobias The introduction of rhesus macaques to Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico in 1938, and the subsequent development of the CPRC for biomedical research, continues its long history of stimulating studies in physical anthropology. The CPRC monkey colonies, and the precise demographic data on the derived skeletal collection in the Center’s Laboratory of Primate Morphology and Genetics (LPMG), provide rare opportunities for morphological, developmental, functional, genetic, and behavioral studies across the life span of rhesus macaques as a species, and as a primate model for humans. The book grows out of a symposium Wang is organizing for the 78th annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists to be held in April 2009. This symposium will highlight recent and ongoing research in, or related to, physical anthropology, and reveal the numerous research opportunities that still exist at this unusual rhesus facility. Following an initial historical review of CPRC and its research activities, this book will emphasize recent and current researches on growth, function, genetics, pathology, aging, and behavior, and the impact of these researches on our understanding of rhesus and human morphology, development, genetics, and behavior. Fourteen researchers will present recent and current studies on morphology, genetics, and behavior, with relevance to primate and human growth, health, and evolution. The book will include not only papers presented in the symposium, but also papers from individuals who could not present their work at the meeting due to limitations in the maximum number (14) of permitted speakers.

Book excerpt: Answers to many of the most important questions about the evolution of primate social strategies still elude us, due to the difficulties in extracting information about primates' decision-making processes and the fitness consequences of their behavioral choices. These sorts of questions cannot be answered experimentally: the answers must be inferred from the behavioral patterns of wild populations in long-term studies. It is only now that sufficiently sophisticated methods are being developed to allow us to make precise inferences from these messy observational data sets. In this thesis I will ask questions about how wild primates make decisions about allocations of favors to social partners, and about the fitness consequences of their behavioral choices. In the following chapters, I examined: (1) reciprocity in capuchin monkeys' social relationships; (2) the relationship between adult female capuchins' sociality and longevity; and (3) the decision rules that capuchins use when soliciting an ally in a coalitionary fight. I used behavioral, genetic, and demographic data of wild white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus). The data came from 11 capuchin social groups and were collected over a 19-year period at Lomas Barbudal Biological Reserve and surrounding private lands in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. To answer the questions above, I used innovative statistical techniques currently unrepresented in the primatological literature. To analyze reciprocity and the fitness benefits of dyadic relationships, I used the Social Relations Model (Kenny 1994). To model capuchin monkey choices of allies in coalitionary aggression, I employed conditional logistic regression. Both of these modeling techniques allow me to take into account the particularities of a dataset collected in the wild. My findings show that capuchin monkeys reciprocate in grooming and coalitionary support exchanges. When choosing allies in coalitionary aggression, capuchins use both rank and relationship quality of the potential partner to make a decision. Finally, sociality is associated with fitness outcomes in female capuchins: More social females tend to live longer than less social ones. Together, these chapters will provide insights into capuchin monkeys' social relationships, decision making and social relationships' effects on fitness.

Book excerpt: Young animals are especially susceptible to predation due to their smaller size and lack of experience and there is evidence that experience plays an important role in the developmental refinement of antipredator behavior. In Chapter 1, I used data collected in the field over a five year infant study of white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) to examine the development of their antipredator behavior during natural predator encounters. The percentage of alarm calls directed at harmless animals decreased reliably from infancy to adulthood, with the first alarm calling appearing at 11 months of age. This study indicated that it may take many years to develop the ability to discriminate between harmless and dangerous animals. In Chapter 2, I examined age-related changes in the snake-directed antipredator behavior of white-faced capuchin monkeys in two experiments conducted in the field. In Experiment 1, I presented inflatable models of two dangerous snakes, the boa constrictor and neotropical rattlesnake, and a white airplane to infants and juveniles. Experiment 2 involved presentations to infants, juveniles, and adults of photographic models of a boa, rattlesnake, harmless indigo snake, and a white snake-like model. I found age-related changes in snake-directed antipredator behavior, notably a decline in vigilance and alarm calling at the novel object. These developmental changes are likely due to the progressive exposure to snakes coupled with the social cues exhibited by nearby conspecifics. In Chapter 3, I examined the influence of the social environment on snake-directed antipredator behavior in infants, juveniles, and adults during presentations of the aforementioned snake models and novel objects. Focal animals alarm called more when alone than after hearing a conspecific alarm call. Conspecifics were more likely to alarm call when focal individuals alarm called at snake models than when they alarm called at the novel models. Results indicate (a) that alarm calling may serve to attract others to the predator's location and (b) that learning about specific predators may begin with a generalized response to a wide variety of species, including some nonthreatening ones, that is winnowed down over several years via conditioned inhibition into a response toward specific dangerous species.
