Book Procedures for Mapping Rare Vegetation Types Using Mid level Vegetation Maps

Download or read book Procedures for Mapping Rare Vegetation Types Using Mid level Vegetation Maps written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, mid-level vegetation maps (VMaps) provide baseline information needed for forest planning and analysis, resource assessment and monitoring, and fire and fuels modeling. Due to their relatively coarse scale, mid-level maps often omit rare but important vegetation communities, resulting in the need for a separate initiative to map these vegetation types. This report, funded by the Forest Service Remote Sensing Steering Committee, describes a process for mapping rare vegetation types using an existing mid-level VMap and associated geospatial data, and for updating the existing map to create a thematically-refined VMap that includes the rare classes. It illustrates the process by highlighting a project conducted by the Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC) for the Custer National Forest, which involved mapping rare, woody deciduous vegetation communities within the Sioux Ranger District.

This important volume, Sustainable Management of Land Resources: An Indian Perspective, addresses these challenges. This comprehensive volume, covering important research, much of it gathered with the use of new technology, tools, and applications, is organized into four sections: (add bullets) land resource inventory and characterization geospatial technologies in land resource mapping and management soil nutrient status and management land use planning and livelihood security The volume looks at how scientists translate their knowledge and experience in sustainable land resources and management into implementable policy decisions, with a particular focus on India. Since India is an agrarian economy, the land resources assume a very critical role affecting the livelihood of a vast majority of populace in the country. Kerala attempted a novel programme of the Peoples Plan Campaign in 1996. A few months prior to this, the Integrated Rural Technology Centre, a research wing of the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad initiated an Action Research Programme in five panchayats to evolve a set of models of participatory planning for sustainable development and to create micro-level organizational structures to carry out them. Book Strengthening community roles in aquatic resource governance in Uganda

Download or read book Strengthening community roles in aquatic resource governance in Uganda written by Burnley, C.[Author]; Adriázola, P.[Author]; Comardicea, I.[Author]; Mugisha, S.[Author]; Mushabe, N.[Author] and published by WorldFish. This book was released on with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Victoria fisheries face severe environmental stresses. Stocks are declining in a context of increasing population and growing demand for the lake’s resources. Rising competition between users is putting conservation goals and rural livelihoods at risk. While Uganda’s co-management policy framework is well-developed, key resources for implementation are lacking, enforcement is poor, and the relations between stakeholders are unequal. Poor rural resource users face significant challenges to effectively participate in fisheries decision-making. This case study demonstrates the progress that can be made using a collaborative approach to catalyze community-led actions linking public health, sanitation and environmental conservation in difficult circumstances, even over a relatively short time period. Multistakeholder dialogue can bring to light the sources of conflict, pinpoint governance challenges, and identify opportunities for institutional collaboration to address community needs. At the same time, the process can help build trust, confidence in collective action and public accountability.

Book State Communities and Forests in Contemporary Borneo

Download or read book State Communities and Forests in Contemporary Borneo written by Fadzilah Majid Cooke and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name 'Borneo' evokes visions of constantly changing landscapes, but with important island-wide continuities. One of the continuities has been the forests, which have for generations been created and modified by the indigenous population, but over the past three decades have been partially replaced by tree crops, grass or scrub. This book, the first in the series of Asia-Pacific Environmental Monographs, looks at the political complexities of forest management across the whole island of Borneo, tackling issues of tenure, land use change and resource competition, 'tradition' versus 'modernity', disputes within and between communities, between communities and private firms, or between communities and governments. While it focuses on the changes taking place in local political economies and conservation practices, it also makes visible the larger changes taking place in both Indonesia and Malaysia. The common theme of the volume is the need to situate local complexities in the larger institutional context, and the possible gains to be made from such an approach in the search for alternative models of conservation and development.
