Book Architecture and Protocols for High Speed Networks

Download or read book Architecture and Protocols for High Speed Networks written by Otto Spaniol and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multimedia data streams will form a major part of the new generation of applications in high-speed networks. Continuous media streams, however, require transmission with guaranteed performance. In addition, many multimedia applications will require peer-to-multipeer communication. Guaranteed performance can only be provided with resource reservation in the network, and efficient multipeer communication must be based on multicast support in the lower layers of the network. Architecture and Protocols for High-Speed Networks focuses on techniques for building the networks that will meet the needs of these multimedia applications. In particular two areas of current research interest in such communication systems are covered in depth. These are the protocol related aspects, such as switched networks, ATM, MAC layer, network and transport layer; and the services and applications. Architecture and Protocols for High-Speed Networks contains contributions from leading world experts, giving the most up-to-date research available. It is an essential reference for all professionals, engineers and researchers working in the area of high-speed networks.

Book Performance Management in ATM Networks

Download or read book Performance Management in ATM Networks written by Simon A. Crosby and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has been identified as the technology of choice amongst high speed communication networks for its potential to integrate services with disparate resource needs and timing constraints. Before it can successfully deliver integrated services, however, significant problems remain to be solved. They centre around two major issues. First, there is a need for a simple, powerful network service interface capable of meeting the communications needs of new applications. Second, within the network there is a need to dynamically control a mix of diverse traffic types to ensure that they meet their performance criteria. Addressing the first concern, this dissertation argues that a simple network control interface offers significant advantages over the traditional, heavyweight approach of the telecommunications industry. A network control architecture based on a distributed systems approach is presented which locates both the network control functions and its services outside the network. The network service interface uses the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) paradigm and enables more complicated service offerings to be built from the basic primitives. A formal specification and verification of the user-network signalling protocol is presented. Implementations of the architecture, both on UNIX and the Wanda micro-kernel, used on the Fairisle ATM switch, are described. The implementations demonstrate the feasibility of the architecture, and feature a high degree of experimental flexibility. This is exploited in the balance of the dissertation, which presents the results of a practical study of network performance under a range of dynamic control mechanisms. Addressing the second concern, results are presented from a study of the cell delay variation suffered by ATM connections when multiplexed with real ATM traffic in an uncontrolled network, and from an investigation of the expansion of bursts of ATM traffic as a result of multiplexing. The results are compared with those of analytical models. Finally, results from a study of the performance delivered to delay sensitive traffic by priority and rate based cell scheduling algorithms, and the loss experienced by different types of traffic under several buffer allocation strategies are presented."

Book Asynchronous Transfer Mode Networks

Download or read book Asynchronous Transfer Mode Networks written by Yannis Viniotis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) is conceived as an all-purpose digital network supporting interactive and distributive services, bursty and continuous traffic, connection-oriented and connectionless services, all in the same network. The concepts of ISDN in general and B-ISDN in particular have been evolving since CCIIT adopted the rrrst set ofISDN recommendations in 1984. Thirteen recommendations outlining the fundamental principles and initial specifications for B-ISDN were approved in 1990, with Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) being the transfer mode of choice for B-ISDN. It seems fair to say that B-ISDN concepts have changed the face of networking. The expertise we have developed for a century on telephone systems and over a number of decades on packet networks is proving to be insufficient to deploy and operate the envisioned B-ISDNs. Much more needs to be understood and satisfactorily addressed before ATM networks can become a reality. Tricomm'93 is dedicated to A TM networks. The technical program consists of invited papers addressing a large subset of issues of practical importance in the deployment of ATM networks. This is the sixth in a series of Research Triangle Conferences on Computer Communications, which emerged through the efforts of the local chapter of IEEE Communications Society.

Book Fast Packet Switching Algorithms for Dynamic Resource Control Over ATM Networks

Download or read book Fast Packet Switching Algorithms for Dynamic Resource Control Over ATM Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time continuous media traffic, such as digital video and audio, is expected to comprise a large percentage of the network load on future high speed packet switch networks such as ATM. A major feature which distinguishes high speed networks from traditional slower speed networks is the large amount of data the network must process very quickly. For efficient network usage, traffic control mechanisms are essential. Currently, most mechanisms for traffic control (such as flow control) have centered on the support of Available Bit Rate (ABR), i.e., non real-time, traffic. With regard to ATM, for ABR traffic, two major types of schemes which have been proposed are rate- control and credit-control schemes. Neither of these schemes are directly applicable to Real-time Variable Bit Rate (VBR) traffic such as continuous media traffic. Traffic control for continuous media traffic is an inherently difficult problem due to the time- sensitive nature of the traffic and its unpredictable burstiness. In this study, we present a scheme which controls traffic by dynamically allocating/de- allocating resources among competing VCs based upon their real-time requirements. This scheme incorporates a form of rate- control, real-time burst-level scheduling and link-link flow control. We show analytically potential performance improvements of our rate- control scheme and present a scheme for buffer dimensioning. We also present simulation results of our schemes and discuss the tradeoffs inherent in maintaining high network utilization and statistically guaranteeing many users` Quality of Service.

Book Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks

Download or read book Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks written by Demetres D. Kouvatsos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Highways are widely considered as the next generation of high speed communication systems. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.
