Book excerpt: In a dynamic computing environment, such as the Grid, resource management plays a crucial role for making distributed resources available on-demand to anyone from anywhere at any time without undermining the resource autonomy; this becomes an art when dealing with heterogeneous resources distributed under multiple trust domains spanning across the Internet. Today Grid execution environments provide abstract workflow descriptions that need a dynamic mapping to actual deployments; this further accentuates the importance of resource management in the Grid. This monograph renders boundaries of the Grid resource management, identifies research challenges and proposes new solutions with innovative techniques for on-demand provisioning, automatic deployments, dynamic synthesis, negotiation-based advance reservation and capacity planning of Grid resources. The Grid capacity planning is performed with multi-constrained optimized resource allocations by modelling resource allocation as an on-line strip packing problem and introducing a new solution that optimizes resource utilization and QoS while generating contention-free solutions. On-demand resource provisioning becomes possible by simplifying abstract resource descriptions independent from the concrete installations. The book further explains the use of the semantic web technologies in the Grid to specify explicit definitions and unambiguous machine interpretable resource descriptions for intelligent resource matching and synthesis; the synthesis process generates new compound resources with aggregated capabilities and prowess. The newly introduced techniques haven been developed and integrated in ASKALON Grid application development and runtime environment, deployed in the Austrian Grid, and demonstrated through well performed experiments.

Advance reservation mechanisms provide the ability to allocate resources to users based on agreed-upon QoS requirements and increase the predictability of a Grid system, yet incorporating such mechanisms into current Grid environments has proven to be a challenging task due to the resulting resource fragmentation. In view of these observations we have devised efficient scheduling algorithms that support advance reservations. We can organize this thesis in two parts. We first use concepts from computational geometry and efficient data structures to present a framework for tackling the resource fragmentation, and for formulating a suite of scheduling strategies. We also develop efficient implementations of the scheduling algorithms that scale to large Grids. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation study using simulation, and we present numerical results to demonstrate that our algorithms perform well across several metrics that reflect both user- and system-specific goals. Advance reservations has also been proposed as one mechanisms to provide Grid resource managers with the ability to co-allocate resources. Co-allocation of resources is one problem that has gained increasing attention due to the emergence of complex applications that require orchestration of resources never envisioned before. In practice, a co-allocation request can be handled manually as a set of individual advance reservations requests. However, such a solution can be computationally expensive and inappropriate for time-sensitive applications. Furthermore, the trend towards more dynamic solutions has emphasized the need for more automatic solutions. As a second contribution, in this thesis we design and develop a co-allocation algorithm that is efficient in co-allocating resources while respecting the atomicity of the co-allocation request and improving user and system performanc.

Desktop grid systems are one of the largest paradigms of distributed computing in the world. The idea is to use the idle and underutilized processing cycles and memory of the desktop machines to support large scale computation. The design issues in desktop grid systems are much more complex as compared to traditional grid environment because the hosts (desktop machines) participating in the computation do not work under one administrative control and can become unavailable at any point in time. The heterogeneity and volatility of computing resources, for example, diversity of memory, processors, and hardware architectures also play its role. To get fruitful results from such hostile environment, scheduling tasks to better hosts become one of the most important issues. The main contribution of this work is about minimizing the applications turnaround time on desktop grid systems that can only be achieved through knowledgeable task scheduling mechanism. A Group based Fault Tolerant Scheduling and Replication Mechanism (labeled as GFTSRM) is proposed that uses collective impact of CPU and RAM, task completion history and spot checking to populate available hosts in relevant groups to perform group based task scheduling. It is shown that grouping the hosts on the basis of computing strength and behavior is necessary for better performance. Relevant replication strategies are appended to each group in order to reduce the wastage of processing cycles. GC has emerged as an important new field, distinguished from conventional distributed computing by its focus on large-scale resource sharing, innovative applications and high performance orientation. In some cases, a few resources may be unavailable at any time, mainly due to the wide range of policies for contributing these resources to the grid. Since high availability is a key requirement in the design and development of grid systems in which resources are heterogeneous and are not continuously available for computation, this paper presents an architecture called 'Availability-aware Resource Management System' (ARMS). This architecture distributes the Resource Management (RM) problem among distinct RM servers to exchange information about different resource requirements. In order to address complex RM issues, a framework is proposed for resource allocation and for regulating supply and demand in GC environments.
