Design optimization of on-line power converter is presented in this thesis. High efficiencies over a wide load range, for example 20%, 50% and 100% load, are often required. It is a challenge for on-line pulse-width modulation (PWM) converters to maintain good efficiencies with light load as well as full load. A two-stage multi-objective optimization procedure is proposed to optimization power converter efficiencies at 20%, 50% and 100% load. Two-FET forward prototype converters are built to verify the optimization results. The LLC (abbreviation of two resonant inductor L and one resonant capacitor C ) series resonant converter can provide high power conversion efficiency because of the resonant nature and soft switching. The design of LLC resonant converter is more difficult than that of PWM converters since the LLC resonant converter has many resonant modes. Furthermore, the LLC resonant converter does not have analytical solution for its resonant operation. In this thesis, a systematic optimization procedure is proposed to optimize LLC series resonant converter efficiency. A mode solver technique is developed to solve LLC resonant converter operations. The proposed mode solver employs non-linear programming techniques to solve a set of LLC state equations and determine the resonant modes. Loss models are provided which serve as the objective-function to optimize converter efficiency. Optimization results show outstanding efficiency performance and experimental agreement with optimization. The optimization work extends to the LLC resonant converter with power factor correction (PFC) circuits where the effect of LLC converter input voltage variation cased by the PFC circuit is considered. Detail comparisons of PWM converter and LLC resonant converter loss profiles are also presented. The reasons that LLC resonant converter has higher efficiency are given and supported by quantitative data. Converter lifetime is highly related to component losses and temperature. The lifetime analysis is presented. The analysis reveals that the LLC resonant converter output capacitor is the weakest component concerning life. Book Resonant Power Converters

Download or read book Resonant Power Converters written by Mohamed Salem and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, DC/DC resonant converters have received much research interest as a result of the advancements in their applications. This increase in their industrial application has given rise to more efforts in enhancing the soft-switching, smooth waveforms, high-power density, and high efficiency features of the resonant converters. Their suitability to high frequency usage and capacity to minimize switching losses have endeared them to industrial applications compared to the hard-switching conventional converters. However, studies have continued to suggest improvements in certain areas of these converters, including high-power density, wide load variations, reliability, high efficiency, minimal number of components, and low cost. In this chapter, the resonant power converters (RPCs), their principles, and their classifications based on the DC-DC family of converters are presented. The recent advancements in the constructions, operational principles, advantages, and disadvantages were also reviewed. From the review of different topologies of the resonant DC-DC converters, it has been suggested that more studies are necessary to produce power circuits, which can address the drawbacks of the existing one.

Book excerpt: A resonant converter is a type of electric power converter that contains a network of inductors and capacitors called a "resonant tank", tuned to resonate at a specific frequency. They find applications in electronics and integrated circuits. The LLC resonant converter is perhaps today's most popular resonant conversion topology. Though in existence for many years, only relatively recently has the LLC resonant converter gained in popularity. Since its first appearance in the literature in 1988, for a long time it was confined to niche applications such as high-voltage power supplies or high-end audio systems. Its significant industrial usage started in mid 2000s with the boom of flat screen TVs, whose power supply requirements found in the LLC resonant converter their best answer, and was fueled by the introduction of new regulations, both voluntary and mandatory, concerning an efficient use of energy. This combination of events pushed power designers to find more and more efficient AC-DC conversion systems. Since then, several other mass-produced electronic devices, such as All-In-One and small form factor PCs, high-power AC-DC adapters and LED drivers, have made a massive usage of this topology, especially in its half-bridge version. Higher power systems, such as server and telecom power supplies and, more recently, charging stations for electric vehicles, have adopted mainly the full-bridge version. Much progress has been made on both the theoretical and practical aspects related to the LLC resonant converter. Numerous publications and application notes deal with it, and many IC manufacturers have dedicated driver ICs in their portfolio. Despite that, its design is still considered a challenging task in Power Conversion. Thus, a guided tour through its intricacies may be beneficial to both the neophyte and the experienced engineer, as well as students active in this field. This monograph covers the basics (operating modes, soft switching mechanism, first-harmonic approximation, etc.) and advanced topics (design optimization, control methods, synchronous rectification, interleaving, etc.) of power conversion using the LLC resonant converter, using a hands-on, design-oriented approach.
