Book excerpt: The diffusion of electrons across a magnetic field in the presence of a beam-plasma instability has been studied by means of two-dimensional numerical simulations. It is found that the beam electrons can diffuse much faster across the magnetic field than the thermal electrons. This can be explained by the fact that the electrons in the beam are in resonance with the waves excited by the beam-plasma instability so that they experience a nearly dc electric field, causing large cE x B/B2 excursions. 8 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: Experimental: Experimental investigation of transport processes in cesium arc plasmas shows classical ambipolar diffusion across low magnetic fields, convective transport associated with the helical instability at intermediate fields, and a return, apparently to diffusive transport and relatively good confinement at magnetic fields ten to twenty times the critical field for the onset of the instability. Improved confinement is also achieved by using a hysteresis in the parameter space of the plasma operation, a procedure which may have wide applicability. Theoretical: The methods of Brownian motion are used to describe the diffusion of electrons and ions in a plasma across a magnetic field in the presence of an anisotropic dynamical friction. The bivariate distribution function of a plasma in a magnetic field and the partial differential equation which it satisfies are found and the distribution function is used to calculate the diffusion coefficients. At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.
