    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Warren
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-12-21
  • ISBN : 0387785183
  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book Tetrapyrroles written by Martin Warren and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excluding the biological polymers proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, modified tetrapyrroles are the biological molecules that have had the greatest impact on the evolution of life over the past 4 billion years. They are involved in a wide variety of fundamental processes that underpin central primary metabolism in all kingdoms of life, from photosynthesis to methanogenesis. Moreover, they bring colour into the world and it is for this reason that these compounds have been appropriately dubbed the ‘pigments of life’. To understand how and why these molecules have been so universally integrated into the life processes one has to appreciate the chemical properties of the tetrapyrrole scaffold and, where appropriate, the chemical characteristics of the centrally chelated metal ion. This book addresses why these molecules are employed in Nature, how they are made and what happens to them after they have finished their usefulness.

Book The Enzymes of Biological Membranes

Download or read book The Enzymes of Biological Membranes written by Anthony Martonosi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of The Enzymes of Biological Membranes, published in four volumes in 1976, we collected the mass of widely scattered information on membrane-linked enzymes and metabolic processes up to about 1975. This was a period of transition from the romantic phase of membrane biochemistry, preoccupied with conceptual developments and the general properties of membranes, to an era of mounting interest in the specific properties of membrane-linked enzymes analyzed from the viewpoints of modem enzymology. The level of sophistication in various areas of membrane research varied widely; the structures of cytochrome c and cytochrome b were known s to atomic detail, while the majority of membrane-linked enzymes had not even been isolated. In the intervening eight years our knowledge of membrane-linked enzymes ex panded beyond the wildest expectations. The purpose of the second edition of The Enzymes of Biological Membranes is to record these developments. The first volume describes the physical and chemical techniques used in the analysis of the structure and dynamics of biological membranes. In the second volume the enzymes and met abolic systems that participate in the biosynthesis of cell and membrane components are discussed. The third and fourth volumes review recent developments in active transport, oxidative phosphorylation, and photosynthesis.

Book Characterization Properties and Applications

Download or read book Characterization Properties and Applications written by Tracey Rouault and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on iron-sulfur proteins includes chapters that describe the initial discovery of iron-sulfur proteins in the 1960s to elucidation of the roles of iron sulfur clusters as prosthetic groups of enzymes, such as the citric acid cycle enzyme, aconitase, and numerous other proteins, ranging from nitrogenase to DNA repair proteins. The capacity of iron sulfur clusters to accept and delocalize single electrons is explained by basic chemical principles, which illustrate why iron sulfur proteins are uniquely suitable for electron transport and other activities. Techniques used for detection and stabilization of iron-sulfur clusters, including EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopies, are discussed because they are important for characterizing unrecognized and elusive iron sulfur proteins. Recent insights into how nitrogenase works have arisen from multiple advances, described here, including studies of high-resolution crystal structures.

Book Iron Sulfur Proteins

Download or read book Iron Sulfur Proteins written by Thomas G. Spiro and published by . This book was released on 1982-06-07 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourth volume in this series which surveys recent research into the structural chemistry at the biological sites where metal ions are found. Presents important findings on the proteins containing iron bound to inorganic sulfide and cysteine thiolate. Experts examine issues such as how to determine the type of iron-sulphur complex in a given protein; the role iron-sulfur proteins play in iron storage; the discovery of three-iron proteins, complementary to the well-known one-, two-, and four-iron classes; the resonance Raman(RR) spectra of iron-sulfur proteins and their analogs.

Book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology

Download or read book Iron Sulfur Clusters in Chemistry and Biology written by Tracey Rouault and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 672 pages. Recent insights into how nitrogenase works have arisen from multiple advances, described here, including studies of high-resolution crystal structures. Numerous chapters discuss how microbes, plants, and animals synthesize these complex prosthetic groups, and why it is important to understand the chemistry and biogenesis of iron sulfur proteins. In addition to their vital importance in mitochondrial respiration, numerous iron sulfur proteins are important in maintenance of DNA integrity. Multiple rare human diseases with different clinical presentations are caused by mutations of genes in the iron sulfur cluster biogenesis pathway. Understanding iron sulfur proteins is important for understanding a rapidly expanding group of metabolic pathways important in all kingdoms of life, and for understanding processes ranging from nitrogen fixation to human disease.
