Book excerpt: This study considers the current economic relationship between the United States and Japan. Bergsten and Noland (both Institute for International Economics) along with Japanese economist Ito (Hitosubashi U.) argue that Japan no longer poses a unique economic threat to the United States and that the U.S. should begin treating Japan like any other major economic power. Among the topics covered are the resurgence of the American economy, the decline of the Japanese economy, resolving disputes through the WTO, and international finance. c. Book News Inc.

Book Case Studies in US Trade Negotiation Resolving disputes

Download or read book Case Studies in US Trade Negotiation Resolving disputes written by Charan Devereaux and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 2006 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1992 and 2000, US exports rose by 55 percent. By the year 2000, trade summed to 26 percent of US GDP, and the United States imported almost two-thirds of its oil and was the world's largest host country for foreign investors. America's interest in a more open and prosperous foreign market is now squarely economic. These case studies in multilateral trade policymaking and dispute settlement explore the changing substance of trade agreements and also delve into the negotiation process--the who, how, and why of decision making. These books present a coherent description of the facts that will allow for discussion and independent conclusions about policies, politics, and processes. Volume 2 presents five cases on trade negotiations that have had important effects on trade policy rulemaking, as well as an analytic framework for evaluating these negotiations.

The potential for disputes, in which the parties hold differing cultural preferences, modes of social behaviour and views on what is "just" and "fair", has not diminshed....This report looks at a number of commercial disputes in Japan and China between the governments of those countries and a foreign government, namely the US; between those governments and foreign private-sector groups; and between private parties from those countries and foreign partners.

Book New Frontiers in Asia Pacific International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution

Download or read book New Frontiers in Asia Pacific International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution written by Shahla Ali and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Arbitration Law Library Volume 59 The eastward shift in international dispute resolution has already involved initiatives not only to improve support for international commercial arbitration (ICA) and investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) but also to develop alternatives such as international commercial courts and mediation. Focusing on these initiatives and their accompanying case law and trends in the Asia-Pacific region, this invaluable book challenges existing procedures and frameworks for cross-border dispute resolution in both commercial and treaty arbitration. Specially assembled for this project, an outstanding team of experienced and insightful arbitrators and scholars describes pertinent developments including: ICA and ISDS in the context of China’s Belt and Road Initiative; the Singapore Convention on Mediation; the shift to virtual hearings and other challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic; mistrust of the application of the rule of law in certain East Asian jurisdictions; growing public concern over ISDS arbitration; tensions between confidentiality and transparency; and potential regional harmonisation of the public policy exception to arbitral enforcement. The contributors chart evolving practices and high-profile cases to make informed observations about where changes are needed, as well as educated guesses about the chances of reforms being successful and the consequences if they are not. The main jurisdictions covered are China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, India, Australia and Singapore. The first in-depth study of recent trends in dispute resolution practice related to business in the Asia-Pacific region, the book’s practical analysis of new resources for dealing with the increasing competition among countries to become credible regional dispute resolution hubs will prove to be of great value to specialists in the international business law sector. Lawyers will be enabled to make informed decisions on which venue and dispute resolution methods are the most suitable for any specific dispute in the region, and policymakers will confidently assess emerging trends in international dispute resolution policy development and treaty-making.

Book Dollar and Yen

Download or read book Dollar and Yen written by Ronald I. McKinnon and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dollar and Yen analyzes the friction between the United States and Japan from the viewpoint of exchange rate economics. From the mid-1950s to the early 1990s, Japan grew faster than any other major industrial economy, displacing the United States in dominance of worldwide manufacturing markets. In the 1970s and 1980s, many books appeared linking the apparent decline of the United States in the world economy to unfair Japanese practices that closed the Japanese market to a wide range of foreign goods. Dollar and Yen analyzes the friction between the United States and Japan from the viewpoint of exchange rate economics. The authors argue against the prevailing view that the trade imbalance should be corrected by dollar depreciation, saying that adjustment through the exchange rate is both ineffective and costly. Stepping outside the traditional dichotomy between international trade and international finance, they link the yen's tremendous appreciation from 1971 to mid-1995 to mercantile pressure from the United States arising from trade tensions between the two countries. Although sometimes resisted by the Bank of Japan, this yen appreciation nevertheless forced unwanted deflation on the Japanese economy after 1985--resulting in two major recessions (endaka fukyos). The authors argue for relaxing commercial tensions between the two countries, and for limiting future economic downturns, by combining a commercial compact for mutual trade liberalization with a monetary accord for stabilizing the yen-dollar exchange rate.

Book US Japan Trade Friction

Download or read book US Japan Trade Friction written by Thomas David Mason and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: US-Japan Trade Friction: Its Impact on Security Cooperation in the Pacific Basin is a collection of essays that explore the security implications of recent US-Japan trade tensions. Of particular concern is whether the security alliance that binds these two Pacific powers can weather the political storm surrounding the burgeoning US trade deficit. Noted scholars examine the dimensions and origins of the trade deficit, the domestic political tensions resulting from it, and the ways in which these conflicts strain a US-Japan security alliance that is already subject to disputes over burden-sharing issues.

Book Resolving Trade Disputes at the New World Trade Organization

Download or read book Resolving Trade Disputes at the New World Trade Organization written by Francis J. Gorman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April of 1996, three judges of the Appellate Body affinned the first major ruling under the trade dispute resolution procedures administered by the new World Trade Organization (WTO). The judges - from the Philippines, Japan, and New Zealand - held that key regulations adopted by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) pursuant to the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments discriminated against imported gasoline in violation of U.S. obligations under the 1994 General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT). A nation's international trade obligations under GATT can, and often do, conflict with its domestic laws and regulations and with fundamental principles of sovereignty. The imported gasoline decision provides the first test of the ability of the WTO to resolve trade disputes. The United States will be given a reasonable period of time to bring its EPA regulations into conformity with the GATT obligations. Failing that, the countries that brought the case, Venezuela and Brazil, will be authorized by the WTO to suspend trade benefits previously granted to U.S. products.
