Download or read book Lines of Resistance written by Adrian Grafe and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resistance is a key concept for understanding the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and for approaching the poetry of the period. This collection of 15 critical essays explores how poetry and resistance interact, set against a philosophical, historical and cultural background. In the light of the upheavals of the age, and the changing perception of the nature of language, resistance is seen to lie at the core of poetic preoccupations, moving poetic language forward. From this perspective, the resistance of poetry is connected with the human call to solidarity, resilience, and, ultimately, meaning. The volume covers poetry from Hardy, Yeats and Auden, among others, to contemporary writers like Hugo Williams and Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter an elite and magical world of fantasy, magic swords, and cows from an author YET to hit the bestseller list. Buddy the Cow was supposed to live out his life chewing cud and eating grass, content to be nothing but an ordinary cow. But when a Fae curse sends him on the journey of a lifetime, he becomes destined for something more: to be the king of Cowmelot. But when you're a cow with no fingers and no martial training, death is only a heartbeat away... because evil sorcerers like swords, especially magical ones. With only a centaur, a magicless wizard, and a bunny girl barbarian to protect him, Buddy finds his life threatened by the evil High Sorcerer Geoff Geezos. The sorcerer wants Buddy to join Hamazon, his world wide tchotchke delivery service. Or die. He'll need every edge he can get, even if it means seeking out those that would destroy him. Yet, with every day that passes, Geoff Geezos grows more deadly and Buddy's friends can no longer protect him from everything. The adventure claims lives one after another and nobody, not even a Fae-cursed cow, knows if they'll make it to the end. Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone making the quest to Cowmelot has an agenda. Because once you become the one and true king, there's only one way out. Take the throne, or die. A Court of Bovines and Destiny was previously published under the title "The Quest for Cowmelot" by Blake R. Wolfe. While the title and the cover have changed, the content remains the same.

Download or read book Nietzsche as Egoist and Mystic written by Andrew Milne and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to make sense of the tension in Nietzsche’s work between the unashamedly egocentric and the apparently mystical. While scholars have tended to downplay one or other of these aspects, it is the author’s contention that the two are not only compatible but mutually illuminating. This book demonstrates Nietzsche’s sustained interest in mysticism from the time of The Birth of Tragedy right through to the end of his productive life. This book argues against situating Nietzsche’s religious thought in the context of Buddhist or Christian mystical traditions, demonstrating the inadequacy of attempts to mediate between Nietzsche and Meister Eckhart and the Bodhisattva ideal of Mahayana Buddhism. Rather, it is argued that Nietzsche’s egoism and mysticism are best understood in the intellectual context which he himself avowed, according to which his “ancestors” were Heraclitus, Empedocles, Spinoza, and Goethe.

Download or read book Authorship and Audience written by Stephen Railton and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Railton's study of the American Renaissance proposes a fresh way of conceiving the writer as a performing artist and the text as an enactment of the drama of its own performance. Railton focuses on how major prose works of the period are preoccupied with their readers--how they seek to negotiate the conflicted space between the authors, who brought to the act of publication their own anxieties of ambition and identity, and the contemporary American reading public, which, as a growing mass audience in a democracy, had acquired an unprecedented authority over the terms of literary performance. New readings of Emerson's orations, Poe's tales, the sketches of the Southwest Humorists, Walden, Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Scarlet Letter, and Moby-Dick relocate American writers in the dramatic context in which they suffered and thrived. The book attends closely to historicist issues, arguing that one of the most profound ways that the culture shaped these texts was also the most immediate--as the audience each writer had to address. Equally concerned with biographical themes, it appreciates each of the major works within the larger pattern of the writer's public career and private needs. Originally published in 1991. Download or read book Who is Who written by Kevin S. Decker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you have been wandering the cosmos from one end of eternity to another for nearly a thousand years, what's your philosophy of life, the universe, and everything? Doctor Who is 50 years' old in 2013. Through its long life on television and beyond it has inspired much debate due to the richness and complexity of the metaphysical and moral issues that it poses. This is the first in-depth philosophical investigation of Doctor Who in popular culture. From 1963's An Unearthly Child through the latest series, it considers continuity and change in the pictures that the programme paints of the nature of truth and knowledge, science and religion, space and time, good and evil, including the uncanny, the problem of evil, the Doctor's complex ethical motivations, questions of persisting personal identity in the Time Lord processes of regeneration, the nature of time travel through 'wibbley-wobbley, timey-wimey stuff, how quantum theory affects our understanding of time; and the nature of the mysterious and irrational in the Doctor's universe.
