These exuberant readings of Birds, Frogs, Lysistrata, and Women at the Thesmophoria, together with the first attempt ever to grapple with the comic style of critical theorists Gilles Deleuze, Achille Mbembe, and Jack Halberstam, connect Aristophanes with contemporary discourses of biopolitics, necrocitizenship, care, labor, and transness, and at the same time disclose a quasi- or para-Aristophanic mode in the written textures of critical theory. His hostility to Euripides is foumled Upon the sophistical nature of his works; in fact the Demagogues, the Sophists and Euri pides were looked Upon by him as three different forms of the same poison which was corrupting the moral character of the nation. The play falls into cwo parts, as will be seen from the synopsis, the first describing the adventures of Dionysus and Xanthias on their journey, while the second describes a poetical contest between Aischylus and Euripides, the two great tragic ports to decide which of them Dionysus shall take back with him to the Upper World. This part of the play, which consists of an elaborate parody on the styles of the two poets, has little interest for a modern audience as compared with the first part. And in the edition which is being acted has accordingly been considerably abridged. Lt hoped, however, that enough has been retained to enable the audience to grasp the general tone and drift of Aristophanes' criticism. The Clouds is a Greek comedy play written by the celebrated playwright Aristophanes. A lampooning of intellectual fashions in classical Athens, it was originally produced at the City Dionysia in 423 BC and was not as well received as the author had hoped, coming last of the three plays competing at the festival that year. It was revised between 420 and 417 BC and was thereafter circulated in manuscript form. No copy of the original production survives, and scholarly analysis indicates that the revised version is an incomplete form of Old Comedy. This incompleteness, however, is not obvious in translations and modern performances. Retrospectively, The Clouds can be considered the world's first extant "comedy of ideas" and is considered by literary critics to be among the finest examples of the genre. The play also, however, remains notorious for its caricature of Socrates and is mentioned in Plato's Apology as a contributor to the philosopher's trial and execution.

He is credited with over forty plays, eleven of which survive, along with the names and fragments of some twenty-six others. His satire deal with political, religious, and literary topics, and with all its humor and fancy is evidently the outcome of profound conviction and a genuine patriotism. The Attic comedy was produced at the festivals of Dionysus, which were marked by great license, and to this, rather than to the individual taste of the poet, must be ascribed the undoubted coarseness of many of the jests. Aristophanes seems, indeed, to have been regarded by his contemporaries as a man of noble character. He died shortly after the production of his "Plutus," in 388 B.
