Book The Creep of Steel at High Temperatures Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Creep of Steel at High Temperatures Classic Reprint written by F. H. Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creep of Steel at High Temperatures Above red heat, steel has yielding characteristics not usually associated with it at ordinary temperatures. We do not, as yet, have sufficient information to indicate definitely into which class of solid or fluid flow hot steel belongs. It may be either a plastic solid or a viscous fluid, or combine the properties of both. A viscous fluid, of which pitch is a good example, has the flow characteristics Shown in curve (a) of Fig. 1. The rate of flow is proportional to the load, even down to the smallest values, and yet a great resistance may be Offered against loads acting for a short time. This class of materials has no true elasticity and therefore no yield point. A plastic solid, such as wet clay, has flow characteristics as shown in curve (b) of Fig. 1. Here we have a more complicated condition. Until the load reaches a certain value there is no flow or extension, but after this point is reached the flow increases regularly in proportion to the load in excess of this value. It will be noted that the flow curve does not reach zero at a definite value of load, but approaches the axis gradually. We do not know the exact cause of this departure from a straight line at low flow rates, but it is probably due to the fact that plastic solids are made up of grains or particles of various sizes and shapes and some are less resistant to pressure than others. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Service on the Endurance Properties of Rail Steels Fatigue failures are due to the repeated stressing of the structure at stresses greater than the endurance limit of the material in that structure. The endurance limit may be defined as that minimum stress which, if repeatedly imposed, will cause cracks. To develop which will progress under repetition of that stress, causing ultimate failure. Book On the Effect of Time and Temperature on the Strength of Steel and Iron Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Effect of Time and Temperature on the Strength of Steel and Iron Classic Reprint written by Ernest G. Coker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Effect of Time and Temperature on the Strength of Steel and Iron The behaviour of iron and steel under simple stresses of various kinds has long been a subject of investigation by the Engineer. And very complete data are available for use in designing structures in metal. When iron or steel is subjected to tensional stress sufficient to cause a permanent stretch in the material, it is well known that the ductility of the material is reduced, and that ultimately the elastic limit rises. Book Effect of Temperature Deformation and Rate of Loading on the Tensile Properties of Low Carbon Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range Classic Reprint

Download or read book Effect of Temperature Deformation and Rate of Loading on the Tensile Properties of Low Carbon Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range Classic Reprint written by Herbert James French and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Temperature, Deformation, and Rate of Loading on the Tensile Properties of Low-Carbon Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range It has long been known that increase in temperature above the ordinary atmospheric range is accompanied by changes in steels, particularly in strength and ductility. A large number of interesting and important papers dealing with various phases of this subject have appeared from time to time, but as recently pointed out by Jeffries our knowledge 15 still unsatisfactory, and a better understanding of these changes will undoubtedly be of benefit to industry. White (35) is of the opinion that our knowledge of the tensilgyproperties of steels at high temperatures is wholly inadequate: and has not kept pace with advancement of knowledge in other branches of engineering, while Howe (3 8) long 0 ago called attention to the apparent anomalies found in study ing the effects of work at temperatures under the thermal trans formations on the properties of wrought iron and steel used in boiler construction. Certainly, from the standpoint of engineering design, it is important to know the variations in limit of propor tionality with changes in temperature, but unfortunately this is the more difficult to determine of those factors considered in tensile tests, and the data available are conflicting. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effect of the Drawing Temperature on the Physical Properties of Some Special Steels: A Thesis With the perfection of high Speed machinery it has become necessary to make the parts as light as possible, and yet to maintain the necessary strength. This has led to the manufacture of steels having a high tensile strength. But to get the full benefit of these steels it is necessary to heat treat them in the proper way. Book The Tensile Properties of Alloy Steels at Elevated Temperatures as Determined by the Short Time Method Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Tensile Properties of Alloy Steels at Elevated Temperatures as Determined by the Short Time Method Classic Reprint written by William Kahlbaum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tensile Properties of Alloy Steels at Elevated Temperatures as Determined by the "Short-Time" Method The information available on the correlation of results from short time and from flow tests is rather limited. N o conclusions that short time tests can entirely replace flow tests are warranted on the basis of available information. It is believed, however, that a large amount of valuable preliminary information can be obtained with the short time method with a great saving of time in the study and development of alloys for continuous service at elevated temperatures. In fact, since the advent of austenitic alloys for service at elevated tempera tures there is still more reason for extended flow tests, such tests to be made for even longer periods of time than heretofore. As many austenitic alloys are metastable yet sluggish in their response to ther mal treatment at temperatures in the vicinity of to F. (6000 to 700° C.) it would not seem advisable to determine their characteristics by the short-time method only. The group of materials reported upon in this paper includes both commercial alloy steels and some special alloys which had been made primarily to show the effects on the tensile properties of various alloy ing elements, such as silicon, chromium, nickel, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, and aluminum.
