Book Resilience Vulnerability Factors As Predictors of College Adjustment

Download or read book Resilience Vulnerability Factors As Predictors of College Adjustment written by Özge Mergen and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may be assumed that the various resources individuals have will be needed in coping with the adjustments required in college. Any deficits in individuals' psychological make-up or maladaptive coping strategies will block their adjustment to college. Within this idea of adjustment, adjustment to college and psychological well being were predicted by several variables named as personality, hardiness, and coping strategies under a stressful condition. Results indicated that problem focused coping and helplessness/self blame had a mediator role between personality variables and psychological well being. Neuroticism was named as a vulnerability factor. Students with neuroticism as a personality characteristic were regarded as risk groups, who were likely to use helplessness/self blame coping. On the other hand, personality characteristics such as conscientiousness, openness/intellect, and hardiness were concluded to be a resilience factors together with problem focused coping.

Book Evaluating Optimism Hope Resilience Coping Flexibility Secure Attachment and PERMA as a Well being Model for College Life Adjustment of Student Veterans

Download or read book Evaluating Optimism Hope Resilience Coping Flexibility Secure Attachment and PERMA as a Well being Model for College Life Adjustment of Student Veterans written by Emre Umucu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student veterans is one of the fastest growing student populations in post-secondary education. However, transitioning from the structured of military service to a less regimented college lifestyle can be very challenging for them. Factors contributing to college life adjustment of student veterans can be complex and cannot be reduced to a single factor, such as academic problems. There is a paucity of information regarding college life adjustment, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and life satisfaction among student veterans. The lack of information on determinants of college life adjustment may limit the effectiveness of postsecondary education support services for student veterans. Recently, Seligman's positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA) has received considerable attention as a model of well-being in postsecondary education. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine (a) to what extent demographic covariates, foundational and emerging positive psychology traits (FEPPTs) and PERMA uniquely predict college life adjustment, HRQOL and life satisfaction of student veterans, (b) PERMA as a happiness and well-being model for college life adjustment, HRQOL, and life satisfaction among student veterans, (c) FEPPTs as predictors of PERMA. A total of 205 student veterans responded to an online-survey. Results revealed that demographic covariates (e.g., service-connected disability), FEPPTs (e.g., optimism), and PERMA (e.g., positive emotion) significantly accounted for college life adjustment, HRQOL, and life satisfaction of student veterans. In addition, a mediation analysis revealed that PERMA partially mediates the relationship between service-connected disability and college life adjustment of student veterans. The results of this study provide empirical supports for the use of PERMA as a comprehensive well-being model of college life adjustment for student veterans.

Book Mutual Aid Groups Vulnerable and Resilient Populations and the Life Cycle

Download or read book Mutual Aid Groups Vulnerable and Resilient Populations and the Life Cycle written by Alex Gitterman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-23 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume examine the role of mutual aid groups and social workers in helping members of oppressed, vulnerable, and resilient populations regain control over their lives. The chapters reveal the ways in which mutual aid processes help individuals overcome social and emotional trauma in contemporary society by reducing isolation, universalizing individual problems, and mitigating stigma. Using the life cycle as a framework the editors establish a theoretical model for practice and demonstrate how social workers as group leaders can foster the healing and empowering process of mutual aid. The contributors also consider the fundamentals of the mutual aid process, the institutional benefits of group service, and specific clinical examples of mutual aid groups. Each chapter offers detailed case materials that illustrate both group work skills and developmental issues for a variety of populations and settings, including HIV-positive and AIDS patients, the homeless, and perpetrators and victims of sexual abuse and family violence. New chapters in this completely revised and updated third edition illustrate the power of mutual aid processes in dealing with children traumatized by the events of September 11, adult survivors of sexual abuse, parents with developmentally challenged children, people with AIDS in substance recovery, and mentally ill older adults.

Book College Students Sense of Belonging and Social Support

Download or read book College Students Sense of Belonging and Social Support written by Stephanie Bozak and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people will experience daily stressors and at least one potentially traumatic event in their lifetime. Although it was initially thought that those exposed to difficulties would experience poor developmental outcomes, many seem to adjust and function well. People who function well despite the adversities they face are considered to be resilient. Resilience or resiliency refers to the dynamic process by which positive adaptation occurs within the context of adversity. It describes the way in which individuals utilize both internal and external resources, to overcome adversity or threats to their development. Although there have been many research studies looking at social support as a factor in resilience, and there are some studies indicating that social support is related to sense of belonging, there has been little research focusing on sense of belonging as a factor in resilience. The purpose of this study was to examine whether social support, sense of belonging, and perceived stress are correlated with resilience. Two hundred and six University of Hartford students completed a survey which included measures of social support (MSPSS), sense of belonging (SOBI-A and SOBI-P), perceived stress (PSS), and resilience (CD-RISC). It was hypothesized that sense of belonging would be positively correlated with social support, and that sense of belonging and social support would be negatively correlated with perceived stress. It was also hypothesized that sense of belonging, social support, and perceived stress would be correlated with resilience and that gender differences would exist. Results of the study indicated that social support and sense of belonging were correlated with each other and with resilience. Results also indicated that perceived stress was also correlated with resilience and that there were some gender differences. The results of the study are further discussed along with implications and future directions.

Book Women of Color In STEM

Download or read book Women of Color In STEM written by Beverly Irby and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there has been a rapid increase of women’s representation in law and business, their representation in STEM fields has not been matched. Researchers have revealed that there are several environmental and social barriers including stereotypes, gender bias, and the climate of science and engineering departments in colleges and universities that continue to block women’s progress in STEM. In this book, the authors address the issues that encounter women of color in STEM in higher education.

Book Using Resilience Characteristics and Traditional Background Factors to Study Adjustment of International Graduate Students in U S

Download or read book Using Resilience Characteristics and Traditional Background Factors to Study Adjustment of International Graduate Students in U S written by Jing Wang and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research introduced resilience characteristics to study the adjustment of international graduate students at American universities. The purpose of the study was to explore relationships among resilience characteristics and background factors; among resilience characteristics and adjustment problem areas; and among adjustment problem areas and background factors. The Personal Resilience Questionnaire and the Michigan International Student Problem Inventory were used in this study. All together 289 unusable responses were gathered from two universities. Correlation studies, t-tests, One-way ANOVA, and Tukey analyses were used. Statistical analyses revealed that: resilience characteristics were moderately correlated with background factors, highly negatively correlated with adjustment problem areas, and better correlated with adjustment problem areas than were background factors. Hence resilience characteristics are central to adjustment. (Contains 6 tables.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a pioneering researcher, this book synthesizes the best current knowledge on resilience in children and adolescents. Ann S. Masten explores what allows certain individuals to thrive and adapt despite adverse circumstances, such as poverty, chronic family problems, or exposure to trauma. Coverage encompasses the neurobiology of resilience as well as the role of major contexts of development: families, schools, and culture. Identifying key protective factors in early childhood and beyond, Masten provides a cogent framework for designing programs to promote resilience. Complex concepts are carefully defined and illustrated with real-world examples.

Book Individual and Organizational Vulnerability and Resilience Factors in the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Individual and Organizational Vulnerability and Resilience Factors in the COVID 19 Pandemic written by Barbara Hildegard Juen and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vulnerability and resilience are concepts that have long been treated as individual and contradicting topics. In recent times, we have seen that vulnerabilities and resilience can go hand in hand and that vulnerabilities cannot be conceptualized only in simple terms because intersectionality must be considered as well as social, organizational, and systemic aspects and processes. One example is that women are more vulnerable (higher values in nearly all stress related measures) in the COVID-19 pandemic. This finding has to be analyzed from an intersectional perspective, because socio-economic factors, cultural factors, exposure to COVID-19 and the type of occupation (e.g. healthcare sector, frontline workers) play an important role in how vulnerable or resilient women can be in a given society. The large number of studies on COVID-19 vulnerabilities makes it necessary to take a closer look at the resilience factors that often go hand in hand with potential vulnerabilities. As we see in the literature about pandemics in general and COVID-19, there are some individual, organizational and systemic vulnerabilities that can be found in all pandemics. From that we can assume that there will be resilience factors within the same concepts that may buffer vulnerabilities.

Book Social Policy for Children and Families

Download or read book Social Policy for Children and Families written by Jeffrey M. Jenson and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the authors argue that a public health framework rooted in ecological theory and based on principles of risk, protection, and resilience is a useful conceptual model for the design of social policy across the substantive areas of child welfare, education, mental health, health, developmental disabilities, substance use, and juvenile justice. Recommendations for ways to advance a public health framework in policy design, implementation, and evaluation are offered.
