Book Residual Stresses in an Overstrained Thick walled Cylinder

Download or read book Residual Stresses in an Overstrained Thick walled Cylinder written by Samuel J. Acquaviva and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radial and tangential residual stresses are determined as a function of stress relief temperature. Disks were sliced from a hydraulically overexpanded cylinder and subjected to various heat treatments. Residual stresses remaining after heat treatment were determined by removing material from the outer periphery of the disks. Strains were measured on the bore of the disk as a function of the amount of material removed. The maximum tangential residual stress at the bore was 55,000 psi with no stress relief treatment. At a stress relief temperature of 1050F, there was no measurable residual stress. (Author).

Book Prediction of Residual Stresses in an Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinder

Download or read book Prediction of Residual Stresses in an Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinder written by P. C. T. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the earlier results for residual stresses are based on the assumption of elastic unloading. In this report, the prediction of residual stresses for the case of reverse yielding including the combined Baushinger and hardening effect will be reported for an autofrettaged thick-walled cylinder. The Bauschinger effect factor is varying as a function of overstrain. The strain-hardening effect is considered with different parameters used for loading and unloading process. The new results indicate that the influence of the combined Bauschinger and hardening effect on residual stress distribution is significant. (Author).

Book Residual Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders Resulting from Mechancially Induced Overstrain

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders Resulting from Mechancially Induced Overstrain written by T. E. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autofrettage is a process for inducing elastic response in thick-walled cylinders subjected tointernal pressures which otherwise cause plastic strains. To extend the use of autofrettage to higher pressure applications and to eliminate many of the problems encountered in the use of the conventional process based on the use of direct internal hydrostatic pressure, a new technique has been developed which utilizes the mechanical advantage of a silding wedge to produce the desired bore enlargement. Since the use of a sliding wedge or mandrel will induce shearing forces at the mandrel-cylinder interface, the resultant residual stress distribution will differ from that theoretically predicted as characteristic of the direct hydrostatic process. It is the purpose of this work to determine the residual stress distribution as a function of magnitude of overstrain and diameter ratio, and how it affects the reyielding characteristics of cylinders autofrettaged by this technique. (Author).

Book Residual Stress and Stress Relaxation

Download or read book Residual Stress and Stress Relaxation written by Eric Kula and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings, entitled RESIDUAL STRESS AND STRESS RELAXATION, address the nature of residual stresses and their measurements, the sources of residual stress, stress relaxation, sub-critical crack growth in the presence of residual stress, residual stresses and properties, and research in progress. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Dan McNaught of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and Mr. Robert J. Sell and Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the book. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Wright, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated.

Book Process Equipment Design

Download or read book Process Equipment Design written by Lloyd E. Brownell and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1959-01-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete overview and considerations in process equipment design Handling and storage of large quantities of materials is crucial to the chemical engineering of a wide variety of products. Process Equipment Design explores in great detail the design and construction of the containers – or vessels – required to perform any given task within this field. The book provides an introduction to the factors that influence the design of vessels and the various types of vessels, which are typically classified according to their geometry. The text then delves into design and other considerations for the construction of each type of vessel, providing in the process a complete overview of process equipment design.

Book Nondestructive Characterization of Materials VI

Download or read book Nondestructive Characterization of Materials VI written by Robert E. Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally the vast majority of materials characterization techniques have been destructive, e. g. , chemical compositional analysis, metallographic determination of microstructure, tensile test measurement of mechanical properties, etc. Also, traditionally, nondestructive techniques have been used almost exclusively for the detection of macroscopic defects, mostly cracks, in structures and devices which have already been constructed and have already been in service for an extended period of time. Following these conventional nondestructive tests, it has been common practice to use somewhat arbitrary accept-reject criteria to decide whether or not the structure or device should be removed from service. The present unfavorable status of a large segment of industry, coupled with the desire to keep structures in service well past their original design life, dramatically show that our traditional approaches must be drastically modified if we are to be able to meet future needs. The role of nondestructive characterization of materials is changing and will continue to change dramatically. It has become increasingly evident that it is both practical and cost effective to expand the role of nondestructive evaluation to include all aspects of materials' production and application and to introduce it much earlier in the manufacturing cycle. In fact, the recovery of a large portion of industry from severe economic problems is dependent, in part, on the successful implementation of this expanded role.

Book Residual Stress Analysis in Swage Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinders by Position Sensitive X Ray Diffraction Techniques

Download or read book Residual Stress Analysis in Swage Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinders by Position Sensitive X Ray Diffraction Techniques written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical investigations were made for swage autofrettage partially plastic ASTM A723 steel cylinders with an outside diameter (OD) to inside diameter (ID) ratio of 2.75 and 74 percent overstrain. Residual stress radial distribution and angular stress distribution around the bore were analyzed using two position-sensitive x-ray diffraction stress analyzers. Theoretical calculation was made by implementing an interactive, iterative Lotus Works spreadsheet residual stress model on an IBM PC. The model was based on the classical solution to the elastic-plastic deformation problem of a symmetric thick walled cylinder under internal pressure, including reverse yielding effect. Angular stress distribution data at the ID and OD indicated that non-axisymmetric deformation had occurred during yielding of the cylinders. Excellent agreement was obtained between experimental results and theoretical predictions, including the Bauschinger effect near the bore. By comparing experimental data with theoretical calculations for the 74 percent overstrained cylinders, the Bauschinger factor for the A723 steel was determined to be close to 0.5. Residual stress analysis for the entire cylinder is suggested in the future.
