Book Introduction to Surface Engineering

Download or read book Introduction to Surface Engineering written by P. A. Dearnley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly illustrated reference work covers the three principal types of surface technologies that best protect engineering devices and products: diffusion technologies, deposition technologies, and other less commonly acknowledged surface engineering (SE) techniques. Various applications are noted throughout the text and additionally whole chapters are devoted to specific SE applications across the automotive, gas turbine engine (GTE), metal machining, and biomedical implant sectors. Along with the benefits of SE, this volume also critically examines SE's limitations. Materials degradation pathways - those which can and those which cannot be mitigated by SE - are rigorously explained. Written from a scientific, materials engineering perspective, this concise text is supported by high-quality images and photo-micrographs which show how surfaces can be engineered to overcome the limits of conventionally produced materials, even in complex or hostile operating environments. This book is a useful resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as professional engineers.

Book Surface Degradation Mechanisms in Laser Clad Aluminium Based Composite Coating on Stainless Steel

Download or read book Surface Degradation Mechanisms in Laser Clad Aluminium Based Composite Coating on Stainless Steel written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Type 316L stainless steels generally have impressive properties as an engineering material but its limitation especially in highly aggressive corrosive environments and wear degradation during contact with other components hinders their potential applications in some engineering functions. The laser cladding technique is an important coating method within the surface engineering field that has the potential to deposit various metallic and ceramic powdery materials locally on metallic surfaces. In this work, novel Al-based alloy coatings through the incorporation of Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Zinc (Zn) into Aluminium (Al) matrix using Laser Cladding Technology (LCT) were developed as coatings on type 316L stainless steels to mitigate the identified limitations. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) affixed with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) were used to characterize the morphological and phase properties of the coatings. The tribological and microhardness properties of the coatings were investigated using a Tribometer and Vicker Microhardness Tester respectively. The electrochemical properties were analyzed by linear polarization technique in 0.5 M sulphuric acid solution. Experimental results revealed that the resulting coatings displayed good morphological and structural characteristics. The Al-based coatings were homogeneous and formed a strong interface with the substrate material. The coatings exhibited different surface electrochemical, mechanical and tribological properties, which were attributed to the intermetallic alloys and the oxide films formed by due to the reinforcement additions. The 90Al-5SiC-5Zn coating at laser power of 1600 W and scan speed of 12 m/min gave highest microhardness value of 923 Hv. Electrochemical studies showed that the coatings yielded higher corrosion resistance than the substrate with the lowest corrosion rate of 0.252 mm/yr for 90Al-10SiC processed at 1600 W, 0.6 m/min. The coatings also yielded higher wear resistance properties as compared to the substrate. The substrate exhibited the highest coefficient of friction (0.82) and wear loss (0.04 g). The 90Al-10SiC processed at 1600 W, 1.2 m/min coating exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction (0.65) and wear loss (0.002 g) suggesting that the incorporation of SiC particles improved the self-lubricating properties of the coatings.

Book Relief of Residual Stresses in a High Strength Aluminum Alloy by Cold Working

Download or read book Relief of Residual Stresses in a High Strength Aluminum Alloy by Cold Working written by Y. Altschuler and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic study was performed on the effectiveness of plastic deformation in tension and compression relief of residual stresses derived from the rapid quenching of 7075 aluminum. Maximum stress relief was observed after about 1.4% deformation in tension and 1 % deformation in compression. Complete stress relief could not be obtained from either mode of deformation. Stress relief was found to be more effective after deformation in tension than in compression. Significant differences in types and levels of residual stresses were found in specimens deformed seemingly uniform in compression when measured on a free surface, or on one in contact with the platen applying the compressive force. The effect of artificial aging as a supplement to mechanical stress relief also was investigated. The practical implications of the results, particularly with respect to forgings, are discussed. Recommendations are made for further work.

Book Laser Surface Melting of Carbon Coated AA7075 Aluminum Alloy

Download or read book Laser Surface Melting of Carbon Coated AA7075 Aluminum Alloy written by Sourabh Biswas and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon is one of the most common solid lubricants and has often been used to achieve superior tribological properties. In this investigation, a CO2 laser in continuous wave mode was used to develop diamond-like carbon (DLC)-rich coatings on 7075 alloys. A detailed investigation on the effect of the in-situ transformed DLC and graphitic nanoparticles on the tribological properties of the 7075 alloys was performed. A unique relationship between the surface hardness and wear rate was noted, wherein the wear rate decreased with decrease in surface hardness after the laser surface engineering. An analysis of wear track and counterbody using EDS and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of metastable DLC-rich graphitic tribolayer during the wear process. A `reverse' transformation of the apparently more stable graphitic carbon to metastable DLCs in the tribolayer during frictional loadings was also noticed. The tribolayer was noted to generate significant lubricating action, and therefore, improve the wear resistance. Also, unlike the loss in lubricating action with increasing time usually exhibited by non-hydrogenated DLCs, the increase in nano-carbon rich melt-zone was observed to partially mitigate this effect by enabling presence of lubricating particles even at greater depths from the surface.

Book The Effect of Surface Coatings on the Fatigue Strength of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book The Effect of Surface Coatings on the Fatigue Strength of Aluminum Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum is a widely used metal in military applications such as vehicles, bridges, air-cushion vehicles, etc., but its use is limited to areas where the aluminum alloys would not be under load with variable or constant stresses and to areas where there would be almost no severe abrasion or corrosion. Anodic coatings tend to increase the abrasion and corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, but the coatings have a detrimental effect on the fatigue endurance (in some instances by as much as 65 percent). The objective of this work was to provide a surface treatment and/or coatings that will allow the use of aluminum wrought alloys in any type of environment and that will be able to withstand the effects of abrasion and stress corrosion and temperature changes up to 344 deg F with an increased fatigue endurance.
