Book Residential Child Care and Its Alternatives

Download or read book Residential Child Care and Its Alternatives written by Friedhelm Peters and published by Trentham Books Limited. This book was released on 2008 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child and youth care needs to be professionalised. It has to be holistic but, as this book shows, that is far from true today. "The Federation Internationale des Communautes Educatives" has consequently produced this book to ensure that children facing such major difficulties that they require care outside their families are cared for in the best possible way.Part One discusses policies, theory and societal developments such as transforming government services for children; the UK's contribution to child care research and policy development; and a holistic approach to child welfare.Part Two describes professional developments, special projects and concrete initiatives in child care, such as: the preservation and rehabilitation of family relationships among children in residential care; crisis centres; the participation of children as a matter of quality; the professionalisation of child and youth care; and, new developments in foster care. This book is essential reading for everyone who works directly with children and young people who require care outside their families. It will also be of value to their managers, and to lecturers and researchers, inspectors, government and NGO officials and others concerned about the care of children.

Book Residential Care of Children

Download or read book Residential Care of Children written by Mark E. Courtney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residential Care of Children fills major gaps in knowledge about residential care of children, and is sure to inform ongoing debates within and between nations about the appropriate use of such institutions. Each "case study" chapter provides a rich description of the development, current status, and future of residential care in countries from Brazil to Botswana. Chapters describe how residential care is defined in the country in question, how it has evolved over time, including its history, trends over time, and any "landmark" events in the history of residential care. Authors examine factors (historical, political, economic, ideological, and cultural) that have contributed to the observed pattern of development of residential care and provide a description of the current state of residential care (number of children in care, ages, average length of stay, reasons that children/youth are placed in residential care, etc.). Lastly, each case study describes expected future directions for residential care and potential concerns. Two integrative chapters provide a critical cross-national perspective, identifying common themes, analyzing underlying factors, and speculating about the future of residential child care across the globe. This insight-filled book will be required reading for all child welfare scholars, particularly as international perspectives become increasingly emphasized.

Download or read book Comparison of Alternative Forms of Residential Child Care in a Voluntary Agency written by Prue Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schertz (1970:221) comments that: "despite the ever-changing forms and functions of the family, no adequate substitute has been found for the primary task of socialising the human, for initiating and nurturing him in the two main tasks of life... loving and working. His basic capacities to adapt to and change the world, derive from his family of biological and cultural heritage. His ability to plan for the future, to act without acting out, to trust in himself and in others without fearing loss of self esteem and loss of self confidence, and his ability to develop self and group identity, all are first learnt in the family relationship system. The family teaches him to love, to think reflectively, to be self responsible, and to perform necessary social roles." (52). My main purpose to carrying out this study is to discover whether substitute care facilities can replicate the care usually provided by the family.

Book excerpt: Therapeutic Residential Care For Children and Youth takes a fresh look at therapeutic residential care as a powerful intervention in working with the most troubled children who need intensive support. Featuring contributions from distinguished international contributors, it critically examines current research and innovative practice and addresses the key questions: how does it work, what are its critical “active ingredients” and does it represent value for money? The book covers a broad spectrum of established and emerging approaches pioneered around with world, with contributors from the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Spain, Australia, Israel and the UK offering a mix of practice and research exemplars. The book also looks at the research relating to critical issues for child welfare service providers: the best time to refer children to residential care, how children can be helped to make the transition into care, the characteristics of children entering and exiting care, strategies for engaging families as partners, how the substantial cost of providing intensive is best measured against outcomes, and what research and development challenges will allow therapeutic residential care to be rigorously compared with its evidence-based community-centered alternatives. Importantly, the volume also outlines how to set up and implement intensive child welfare services, considering how transferable they are, how to measure success and value for money, and the training protocols and staffing needed to ensure that a programme is effective. This comprehensive volume will enable child welfare professionals, researchers and policymakers to develop a refined understanding of the potential of therapeutic residential care, and to identify the highest and best uses of this intensive and specialized intervention.

Book Revitalizing Residential Care for Children and Youth

Download or read book Revitalizing Residential Care for Children and Youth written by James K. Whittaker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume addresses the question of how societies with developed welfare and social service systems are assessing current needs and future directions in their residential child and youth care sectors. This includes dealing with the historical concerns raised about the placement of children and youth in residential care settings as well as identifying innovative strategies, which offer new pathways for the integration of this often neglected area of service with families and communities. This review builds on an emergent and growing literature of cross-national child welfare policies and practices including child protection arrangements (Gilbert et al., 2011) and meeting the needs of migrant children (Skivenes et al., 2014). Our contributors share a common child welfare goal of seeking to ensure healthy growth and development for children served in order to achieve desired social outcomes for the community at large. Each of the sixteen countries selected for inclusion will be viewed through a common template including the policy context (historical developments, key trends and policy initiatives), promising programmatic innovations, and information obtained from a matrix developed in an earlier research effort (Erasmus+ Project) by Sigrid James and colleagues from five European countries (James et al., 2021). The Erasmus+ project, along with the matrix and rationale for its use, is described in detail in Chapter 3"--

Book Transitions From Care to Independence

Download or read book Transitions From Care to Independence written by Jennifer Driscoll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book focuses on the critical role of educational achievement for the wellbeing and success of vulnerable youth in adulthood. It is concerned with three interconnected issues: the support which is or should be afforded to youth ageing out of state care to enable them to fulfil their academic potential; the interdependence of social aspects of ‘care’ and educational attainment for children growing up in state care; and the conditions which are pre-requisite for transition to fully autonomous adulthood, together with the implications of these for the state’s responsibilities to care leavers. These issues are addressed through a review of international literature based on the educational outcomes and life-chances of youth graduating from state care, analysis of the findings of a three-year qualitative study following the educational transitions of young people, and the use of theoretical frameworks to explore the complexities of children’s experiences of the state care system. In doing so the book balances predominantly needs-based discourses with a children’s right perspective, focusing on competence rather than vulnerability and promoting the development of the skills needed for autonomous adulthood. Reconceptualising Transitions from Care to Independence should be considered essential reading for researchers, practitioners and policy makers in the fields of education, childhood studies and adoption and fostering services. Additionally, the issues addressed are of wider relevance to youth transitions to adulthood. Youth ageing out of care provide a particularly insightful case study into the broader cohort of young people entering the workforce in an era of a globalised economy and austerity.
