Download or read book Researching Down Ancestors written by Ian Maxwell and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2004 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the nine counties of Ulster, none can claim a more cosmopolitan and fascinating history than Down. In ancient times it formed part of the ancient kingdom of the Ulaid; the Dal Fiatach, the most important of the groupings of tribes of Ulaid, came to dominate the east of the county with their capital at Downpatrick. Vikings came to raid and then settled along the coast. Later the Normans seized control of the Dal Fiatach kingdom constructing castles, monasteries and abbeys before becoming 'hibernicised'. In the seventeenth century, thousands of Scottish and English settlers poured into Down, establishing themselves in the north and east of the county. Meanwhile the native Irish were able to preserve their way of life in south Down where their close-knit communities were sufficiently well organised under their traditional leaders to co-exist with the newcomers. The distribution of surnames in the couty provides lasting evidence of its complex history. The purpose of this book is to provide a practical guide for the family historian searching for ancestors in County Down. It is true that many records have been lost, including those in the destruction of the Public Record Office in Dublin in 1922. However, much has survived to aid the dedicated family or local historian. Moreover, it has become increasingly accessible in the detailed catalogues and user-friendly searching aids in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. Because of the breadth of the material covered, this book will appeal both to the experienced researcher and to the novice. Of particular value are the detailed listings of the records of landed estates, churches and schools, as well as the appendices listing townlands and unofficial place-names for the county.

Download or read book My Best Genealogy Tips written by Robin R. Foster and published by . This book was released on 2023-05-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin R. Foster, a member of the South Carolina Genealogical Society, Columbia Chapter, is an experienced researcher who has given numerous presentations and answered thousands of questions from researchers around the globe. She had seen people make common mistakes like using family trees rather than historical records and not remembering to include important things in their research. So, she wrote My Best Genealogy Tips: Quick Keys to Research Ancestry, Book 2 with the intention of helping beginners and seasoned researchers alike to avoid these common pitfalls. In her book, Robin outlines the steps for conducting an oral history interview, detailed the information available on FamilySearch, and suggested resources for researching ancestors in different regions. She also stressed the importance of telling your own family history and shared insider knowledge that even expert researchers often forget about. Finally, she provided helpful tips on obtaining permission to use photos you find during your research. From Robin: I love to teach people how to do their family history. I wrote this book to try to give my patrons another way to find historical records after they talk to living relatives. They all want some of the things I included below: Why Would You Want to Trace Family History? Everyone has special reasons for the efforts they make to learn more about their family history. Do any of the following reasons resonate with you? I want to learn about our ancestors. For some, their family was never discussed while growing up. Others are trying to make connections because they never knew a parent or grandparent. I want to be able to share my history with my children. So many have committed to finding, preserving, and sharing family history with future generations because they feel a moral obligation to do so. I love discovery; it is a fun thing to do. You may have begun researching because you love the hunt, and you are curious about what you may uncover. I want to understand more about myself. Do you suspect that some of the qualities that make you who you are can be attributed to an ancestor? Do you wonder which decisions they made concerning education, where to live, or employment had the most effect on your life? Do family members say you remind them of an ancestor? I want to learn about the place where my ancestor lived. It is wonderful to pass on the traditions that your ancestor brought from their native land. I want to know about the challenges my ancestors faced. Did you grow up hearing family stories about the war or depression that made you want to know more about how your ancestor was impacted? Delving into the past helps you to understand more about how they handled struggles. I am looking for living relatives. Some researchers are looking to connect with living descendants to discover what they can share about ancestors. They invite the newly discovered to family reunions and share stories and photographs.

Book Tracing Your Ancestors Using DNA

Download or read book Tracing Your Ancestors Using DNA written by Graham S. Holton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-use, straightforward guide for British family historians looking to trace their ancestry using DNA testing. DNA research is one of the most rapidly advancing areas in modern science, and the practical use of DNA testing in genealogy is one of its most exciting applications. Yet there is no recent British publication in this field. That is why this accessible, wide-ranging introduction is so valuable. It offers a clear, practical way into the subject, explaining the scientific discoveries and techniques and illustrating with case studies how it can be used by genealogists to gain an insight into their ancestry. The subject is complex and perhaps difficult for traditional genealogists to understand but, with the aid of this book, novices who are keen to take advantage of it will be able to interpret test results and use them to help answer genealogical questions which cannot be answered by documentary evidence alone. It will also appeal to those with some experience in the field because it places the practical application of genetic genealogy within a wider context, highlighting its role as a genealogical tool and suggesting how it can be made more effective.

Your DNA Guide - the Book is like no other genetic genealogy book on the market. Instead of learning more-than-you-need-to-know in textbook style, you'll choose a specific DNA question to start exploring right away. You'll follow concrete step-by-step plans, learning important DNA concepts--in plain English--as you go. Do you want to learn who your 2X great grandmother is? Turn to page 23. Do you want to know how you are related to one of your DNA matches? Page 37. As you proceed, you check your progress and get new guidance based on your specific results at each stage. (Including troubleshooting, like when your matches just aren't responding or your great-grandparents turn out to be first cousins.) This powerful, hands-on approach is based on Diahan's 20 years of experience in the genetic genealogy industry and especially in the past five years, as she helps clients one-on-one make DNA discoveries. It became clear to her that while each client's situation may be unique, there are patterns in how you can find solutions that you can apply yourself. Your DNA Guide - the Book is for anyone who has taken a DNA test or may want to. It helps genealogists reconstruct family trees. It helps adoptees identify biological relatives.
