Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches on the Pathology and Treatment of Some of the Most Important Diseases of Women The term "puerperal fever" has been employed for upwards of a century, to designate the most fatal inflammatory disease to which child-bed women are liable. The name is now generally adopted by medical writers, and is considered to be synonymous with the terms, Puerperal Peritonitis, Child-bed Fever, Peritoneal Fever, or the Epidemic Disease of Lying-in Women. The records of medicine afford indubitable evidence, that puerperal or child-bed women have, from the most remote periods of antiquity, been liable to attacks of this destructive affection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women Concerning some of these diseases I have ventured to advance new views, both of their pathology and their treatment, and towards these criticism may fairly be directed; but I can claim for most of them that they have already been published in the form of occasional papers, and. Have been well received by those whose opinions are of the great est value. My chief Object in this book has been to Offer the results of my own experience in as condensed a form as possible and I have therefore avoided, as far as I could, long quotations, needless references, and detailed accounts of cases. I have also refrained from introducing illustrations of pathological appearances, for I have rarely found them to convey any very intelligible idea of the facts, unless in the form of costly lithographs; and the use of these would have greatly enhanced the cost of the book, without giving a corresponding increase to its value. The chapter on Diseases of the Ovary is an enlargement of my Hastings Essay Of 1873. My heartiest thanks are due to my friend Dr. Hickinbotham for his assistance in seeing the book through the press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Women: Including Their Pathology, Causation, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment; A Manual for Students and Practitioners IN the following pages I have attempted to present to the student and junior practitioner such an account of the diseases incidental to women as will prove a reliable, practical clinical guide. Those who, from lack of time or opportunity during their stu dent career, neglected to make themselves familiar with a subject which will form a most important item in the daily routine of ordinary practice, may thus be enabled to repair the omission. My endeavor has been to give an impartial account, and if, in dealing with the subject of displacements of the uterus, too much prominence should appear to have been given to their mechanical treatment, it has been in order that the question should be fairly represented, not that the practitioner is recommended to place too great reliance upon mechanical appliances. The task of condensing within the limits of a manual all that has stood the test of time and experience in this specialty, has been a difficult one. Doubtless many omissions will be found. Still, I trust these may be rectified by encouraging the student to investigate the subject of gynecology more exhaustively in larger works. I have to acknowledge my own indebtedness for much valuable information to Dr. Barnes's Clinical History of the Medical and Surgical Diseases of Women, Dr. T. Gaillard Thomas's Fracti cal Treatise on the Diseases of Women, and other similar works duly acknowledged in the text. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pathology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of Women: Including the Diagnosis of Pregnancy The present work, founded on a course of lectures delivered at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, is intended to form an introduction to the study of the diseases peculiar to women. The first and principal part is devoted to the elucidation of the diagnosis of these diseases, including the diagnosis of pregnancy; in the second part of the work the treatment of these diseases is considered. The primary object of the work is to afford increased facilities for diagnosis; and a peculiar arrangement of the subject, adapted for the purpose of carrying out that object in the most efficient manner, has been here followed. It may be necessary to explain why it has been thought advisable to give this great prominence to the question of diagnosis, and why other questions have been made subservient to it. Very little consideration will Show how completely subsidiary to questions of diagnosis are all others likely to present themselves to the student in his early attempts to investigate disease, of whatever kind, and wherever situate. In those admirable lectures on clinical medicine to which it was my privilege to listen, Dr. Walshe quotes the saying of Demosthenes. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Diseases of Women I have written this book for the medical student. I have attempted to present the best teaching of modern gynecology, untrammelled by antiquated theories or methods of treatment. I have, in most instances, recom mended but one plan of treatment for each disease, hop ing in this way to avoid confusing the student or the physician who consults the book for practical guidance. I have, as a rule, omitted all facts of anatomy, phys iology, and pathology which may be found in the gen eral text-books upon these subjects. Such facts have been mentioned in detail only when it seemed important for the elucidation of the subject, or when there were certain points in the pathology that were peculiar to the diseases under consideration. I am indebted to Dr. H. D. Beyea for several pathological drawings, and to Dr. Wm. R. Nicholson for the preparation of the Index. Download or read book Outlines of the Principal Diseases of Females written by Fleetwood Churchill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the Principal Diseases of Females: Chiefly for the Use of Students If any apology be necessary for the publication of the following work, the author trusts that it will be found in the circumstance, that a treatise on the diseases of females, adapted equally for junior and senior students, is yet a desideratum in Our medical literature. Many valuable monographs we possess, and even volumes of admirable essays on this subject; but the former are so scattered as to be out of the reach of the greater number of students, and the latter so little elementary as to be unsuitable except for the more advanced. To meet these objections, it has been arranged, in the present volume, that the text shall contain an ample outline of the history, pathology, symptoms and treatment of the diseases, without any detail Of controversies or conflicting opinions, which are given in full in the notes appended to each page; so that the junior student, by confining his attention to the text, may acquire elementary information, which may be subsequently extended by consulting the notes and references. In the notes, likewise, will be found extracts from the various authors, wherever the support of their opinions seemed desirable. I have preferred giving their views in their own words as being less liable to be mistaken. Where extracts were not deemed advisable, references have been given, and considerable care has been taken to have them correct. Any remarkable and authentic cases, which bear upon the subject, have been inserted, for the double purpose of elucidation and description. Altogether it is earnestly hoped that the matter contained in the notes, as well as the text, may be found useful, and that by the division the progress of the student may be facilitated. Download or read book A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Women written by John M. Scudder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases of Women: Illustrated by Colored Plates and Numerous Wood Engravings Want of rest, and exposure during the menstrual period, is a frequent source of disease, and it is well to' impress upon the minds of our women the need of care at these times. Not but that a woman who had inherited a vigorous body, and had lived an ao tive, healthy life, might not endure very great exposure without suffering, Congenital hydrophobia is a very common cause of uterine dis ease. Some women never wash - anything but their faces - and have to be taught that in civilized life cold water may compensate for sedentary habits. The woman of lax fibre and feeble develop ment will find the vigorous application to the pelvis, abdomen, and genitalia, of cold water, with brisk friction in drying, a most important means of development. I am free to say, that no woman has a right to enter the marital relation, unless she can perform the duties appertaining to it. If the body is feeble, or lacks development, her duty to herself, her husband, her children, and to society, demands that she employ all means to recover physical and sexual health. I leave it to the reader to say, from his experience, if these are not facts; if they are, the physician's duty in the premises is very clear - educate the people to right views of life. With the use of the reproductive apparatus comes abuse, and from this many cases of uterine disease are grown. In early mar ried life comes too frequent copulation, and excessive excitement of the reproductive apparatus, sometimes without the relief that comes from the completed venereal orgasm. Then pregnancy follows Without a knowledge of the care that should be used in this condition, and frequently a too early return to the exhausting labors of the household after childbirth. Then possibly exhaust ive and prolonged lactation comes in to complete the wrong to the previously exhausted reproductive apparatus. In many cases the cares of life are so great as to exhaust the vital forces; in other cases the labor in the care of the household is exhaustive, and in others the food is so imperfectly prepared that the woman can not make blood enough to sustain healthy life.
