Book Introduction to Solar terrestrial Phenomena and the Space Environment Services Center

Download or read book Introduction to Solar terrestrial Phenomena and the Space Environment Services Center written by Stephen J. Mangis and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an introduction to solar-terrestrial phenomena for those with no special background in astrophysics or solar astronomy. Discussions of physics have been kept to a minimum, with emphasis on phenomonology instead. An individual completely unfamiliar with solar events should, after reading this volume, be able to read and understand the SESC Report and Forecast of Solar Geophysical Activity and be able to apply its contents to his particular area of concern. This volume is also intended as a quick reference work for Skylab ATM Principal Investigator Teams to assist them in using the ATM data book. For that reason, a list of abbreviations used in forecasts and observatory reports is included. Subjects discussed are solar structure and processes, solar activity, and solar-terrestrial relations. There is a brief description of the Space Environment Services Center's activities.

Book Introduction to Solar Radio Astronomy and Radio Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Solar Radio Astronomy and Radio Physics written by A. Krüger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. 1. Short History of Solar Radio Astronomy Since its birth in the forties of our century, solar radio astronomy has grown into an extensive scientific branch comprising a number of quite different topics covering technical sciences, astrophysics, plasma physics, solar-terrestrial physics, and other disciplines. Historically, the story of radio astronomy goes back to the times of James Clerk Maxwell, whose well known phenomenological electromagnetic field equations have become the basis of present-time radio physics. As a direct consequence of these equations, Maxwell was able to prognosticate the existence of radio waves which fifteen years later were experimentally detected by the famous work of Heinrich Hertz (1887/88). However, all attempts to detect radio waves from cosmic objects failed until 1932, which was mainly due to the early stage of development of receiving techniques and the as yet missing knowledge of the existence of a screening ionosphere (which was detected in 1925). Therefore, famous inventors like Thomas Edison and A. E. Kennelly, as well as Sir Oliver Lodge, were unsuccessful in receiving any radio emission from the Sun or other extraterrestrial sources. Another hindering point was that nobody could a priori expect that solar radio emission should have something to do with solar activity so that unfortunately by chance some experiments were carried out just at periods of low solar activity. This was also why Karl Guthe Jansky at the birth of radio astronomy detected galactic radio waves but no emission from the Sun.

Download or read book Under the Radar written by M Goss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rare for a complete biography of an Australian scientist, particularly of an Australian woman scientist, to be published. It is rarer for such a book to be co-authored by an American. Although scientists have written discourses on the history of their discipline, it is most unusual for a scientist to write a full length biography of a colleague in his ?eld. It is also uncommon for a man to write about an Australian woman scientist; most of the work on Australian women scientists has been done by other women. However, these authors, both distinguished researchers in the ?eld of radio astr- omy, became so interested in the history of their discipline and in the career of the pioneer radio astronomer Ruby Payne-Scott that they spent some years bringing this book to fruition. Until relatively recently, Ruby Payne-Scott had been the only woman scientist mentioned brie?y in histories of Australian science or of Australian radio astronomy. This book will be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in these disciplines. Being scientists themselves, the authors explain Payne-Scott’s scienti?c work in detail; therefore, the value and importance of her contributions can, for the ?rst time, be recognised, not only by historians but also by scientists.

Book excerpt: Vistas in Astronomy, Volume 1: Co-operation and Organization, History and Philosophy, Dynamics, Theoretical Astrophysics, Instruments, Radio Astronomy, Solar Physics brings together the ideas that form the structural units of what is known about astronomy. This book is organized into seven sections encompassing 93 chapters. Section I provides a summary of the significant contributions of international cooperation and various astronomy-related organizations in the advancement of astronomy. Section II highlights the historical developments in astronomy, from the early studies of the Egyptians to the formulation of philosophical concepts of cosmology. Sections III and IV describes the dynamic and theoretical aspects of astrophysics. These sections consider research studies on stellar dynamics, atmospheres, and magnetic fields, as well as the formation of condensation in a gaseous nebula. Part V is devoted o the developments in telescope optics and mirrors, spectrographs, electronic calculating machines, and photometers, while Section VI examines the field of radio astronomy. Part VII looks into solar physics related studies, including the structure and movements of sunspots, eclipse observation, and spectroscopic investigations of the solar corona. This book is of great value to astronomers, astrophysicists, solar physicists, and researchers in the allied fields.
