Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches in Magneto-Optics: With Special Reference to the Magnetic Resolution of Spectrum Lines In the spring of 1906 I had the honour to deliver before the Royal Institution of Great Britain a lecture "On Recent Progress in Magneto-optics." A distinguished astronomer told me two or three years later that he had read the account of this lecture several times over. I have no doubt that his remark was meant as a compliment, but it signified also a too condensed exposition of the subject. At about the same time came the proposal of the Editor of this series of monographs to supplement my discourse and to give an expansion of it in book form. Consideration of the two communications, both acting in the same direction, easily induced me to prepare the present volume. A few historical facts in the history of the relations between magnetism and light may be recalled here. Faraday's fundamental discovery of the magnetic rotation of the plane of polarisation of light propagated parallel to the magnetic field dates from 1845. In 1877 Kerr showed that a magnetisation of an iron mirror modifies the properties of incident plane polarised light. In 1896 and 1897 the present author discovered the resolution of the spectrum lines of a source of light when under the influence of strong magnetic fields. Book Theoretical Aspects and New Developments in Magneto Optics

Download or read book Theoretical Aspects and New Developments in Magneto Optics written by J.T. Devreese and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute on "Theoretical Aspects and New Developments in Magneto-Optics" was held at the University of Antwerpen (R.U.C.A.), from July 16 to July 28, 1979. The Institute was sponsored by NATO. Co-sponsors were: Agfa-Gevaert (Belgium), A.S.L.K. (Belgium), Bell Telephone Mfg. CO. (Belgium), Esso Belgium, Generale Bankmaatschappij (Belgium), General Motors (Belgium), I.B.M. (Belgium), Kredietbank (Belgium), Metallurgie Hoboken-Over pelt (Belgium), National Science Foundation (U.S.A). A total of 60 lecturers and participants attended the Institute. Scope of the Institute The magneto-optic phenomena are due to the change of the polarizability of a substance as a result of the splitting of the quantized energy bands. Most of these phenomena were discovered during the second half of this century. The understanding of the magneto-optical effects of all kinds, however, was brought by the advent of quantum mechanics, and since then important progress has been made in many fields of experimental methods and techniques.

Book Magnetophotonics

Download or read book Magnetophotonics written by Mitsuteru Inoue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book merges theoretical and experimental works initiated in 1997 from consideration of periodical artificial dielectric structures comprising magneto-optical materials. Modern advances in magnetophotonics are discussed giving theoretical analyses and demonstrations of the consequences of light interaction with non-reciprocal media of various designs. This first collection of foundational works is devoted to light-to-artificial magnetic matter phenomena and related applications. The subject covers the physical background and the continuing research in the field of magnetophotonics.

Book Modern Magnetooptics and Magnetooptical Materials

Download or read book Modern Magnetooptics and Magnetooptical Materials written by A.K Zvezdin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Magnetooptics and Magnetooptical Materials provides a comprehensive account of the principles and applications of magnetooptics, bridging the gap between textbooks and specialist accounts in the research and review literature. The book is aimed at the graduate physicist and electrical engineer, but assumes no specialist knowledge of magnetooptics. Chapters have been designed to be reasonably independent, so that readers in search of information on a particular topic can go straight to the appropriate place in the book, with only occasional reference to material elsewhere. Divided into three main parts, the book begins with the principles of magnetooptics to provide the necessary theoretical background. This section's emphasis is on introducing practical considerations through examples taken from real-life situations. The next part surveys a wide range of magnetooptic materials, including metals, alloys, and granular structures. The final part explores applications of magnetooptics in practical devices, such as modulators, switches, memory devices, and waveguides. This book provides a thorough introduction for graduate students of physics and electrical engineering, and a useful reference for researchers.

Book Photonic Devices

Download or read book Photonic Devices written by Jia-ming Liu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-11 with total page 1108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photonic devices lie at the heart of the communications revolution, and have become a large and important part of the electronic engineering field, so much so that many colleges now treat this as a subject in its own right. With this in mind, the author has put together a unique textbook covering every major photonic device, and striking a careful balance between theoretical and practical concepts. The book assumes a basic knowledge of optics, semiconductors and electromagnetic waves. Many of the key background concepts are reviewed in the first chapter. Devices covered include optical fibers, couplers, electro-optic devices, magneto-optic devices, lasers and photodetectors. Problems are included at the end of each chapter and a solutions set is available. The book is ideal for senior undergraduate and graduate courses, but being device driven it is also an excellent engineers' reference.
