Research effort of the NEW CLASSIFICATION TECHNIQUES Task has been devoted substantially to improved measures for the Army Classification Battery (ACB) and identification of combinations of tests which are the most effective differential predictors of success in occupational areas and subareas. Additional Task objectives encompass (1) identifying potential career enlisted men; (2) screening and assignment of enlisted men of relatively low ability, (3) developing physical proficiency measures to classify EM for combat and combat-support MOS with unusual physical demands. New Classification tests developed and ready for comprehensive evaluation as potential components of the ACB include: aptitude and ability tests for Electronics, General Maintenance, Motor Maintenance, and Clerical job areas; three information tests for Construction and Mechanical-Electrical jobs; and personality-interest measures.

Book excerpt: Matching the abilities of men entering the Army to the demands of training courses and jobs is an ever-critical problem facing Army personnel management. Aptitude area composites have been developed to measure the potential of the men, and the scores from these composites are used in making decisions about the men's assignments. The productivity of the men in their training and job assignments can be enhanced by obtaining more accurate assessments of their potential to perform in the different job categories. Based on a longitudinal study of the effectiveness of the Army classification battery (ACB) tests in predicting training success in military occupational specialty (MOS) courses, an improved set of aptitude area composites has now been developed. These composites and the benefits that would derive from their use are described in the present report.

Book excerpt: One of the objectives of the New Classification Techniques Task is to explore new test content which will increase the effectiveness of classification and assignment in the Army. In pursuit of this objective, possible new cognitive information tests have been examined along with new noncognitive tests. Effort in this direction has included research on occupational interest measures. In the endeavor to meet the need for a measure of mechanical interest, the Army Job Activities Questionnaire (AJAQ-M) has been constructed. The item pool was developed to reflect such factors as expressed interests, experiences, and job preferences that may be predictive of success in training and job performance in construction crafts MOS. The questionnaire was designed to supplement information tests such as the experimental Tool and Trade Knowledge Tests. The present publication describes the selection of cluster keys based on an internal analysis of the interrelationships among items and sections of the AJAQ-M. It was hoped that these keys would provide greater understanding of the dimensions of personality expressed through preferences for job activities of various kinds and/or job requirements associated with construction crafts MOS. Book excerpt: BESRL Technical Research Reports are publications describing completed research studies or programs which contribute directly to the solution of Army human factors problems. The Report is generally divided into two parts--a brief general report to management and a technical supplement. BESRL Technical Research Notes are of interest primarily to technically trained research workers in the Department of Defense and in other government research agencies. Notes present technical information concerning research methodology or basic psychological knowledge growing out of the work program. BESRL Research Studies are special reports to military management, generally prepared in response to questions raised by operating agencies when early answers are needed. Research Studies may include presentations to military management, interim bases for changes in personnel operations, and bases for research decisions. Distribution is usually limited to operating agencies with a direct interest in the content. BESRL Research Memorandums are informal reports on technical research problems. Research Memorandums include the following types of content: details concerning construction of experimental instruments, fragmentary or incidental data, and methodological developments relating primarily to in-house technical operations. Limited distribution is made, primarily to personnel engaged in research for the U.S. Army Behavioral Science Research Laboratory.
