Book North American Social Report

Download or read book North American Social Report written by Alex C. Michalos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers who intend to read this volume without reading the first, some in troductory remarks are in order about the scope of the work and the strategy used in all five volumes to measure the quality of life. In the frrst chapter of Volume I, I reviewed the relevant recent literature on social indicators and so cial reporting, and explained all the general difficulties involved in such work. It would be redundant to repeat that discussion here, but there are some fundamental points that are worth mentioning. Readers who fmd this account too brief should consult the longer discussion. The basic question that will be answered in this work is this: Is there a difference in the quality of life in Canada and the United States of America, and if so, in which country is it better? Alternatively, one could put the question thus: If one individual were randomly selected out of Canada and another out of the United States, would there be important qualitative differences, and if so, which one would probably be better om To simplify matters, I often use the terms Canadian' and 'American' as abbreviations for 'a randomly selected resident' of Canada or the United States, respec tively.

This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The television spectacles of Oka and the Rodney King affair served to focus public disaffection with the police, a disaffection that has been growing for several years. In Canada, confidence in the police is at an all-time low. At the same time crime rates continue to rise. Canada now has the dubious distinction of having the second highest crime rate in the Western world. How did this state of affairs come about? What do we want from our police? How do we achieve policing that is consistent with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? The essays in this volume set out to explore these questions. In their introduction, the editors point out that constitutional order is tied to the exercise of power by law enforcement agencies, and that if relations between the police and civil society continue to erode, the exercise of force will rise - a dangerous prospect for democratic societies.

Book Regulatory Reform in Canada

Download or read book Regulatory Reform in Canada written by W. T. Stanbury and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1982 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: This study examines the nature of and prospects for regulatory reform in Canada. In particular, we are concerned with the elimination of liberalization of direct regulation in such industries as telecommunications, airlines, trucking, and agriculture ... In focusing our attention on the prospects for reforming direct regulation in Canada, we do not wish to slight the potential value of reforming the regulatory process. But most procedural reforms focus on the margin or flow of new regulation while deregulation proper is aimed at reducing the enourmous stock already in existence ... Within the field of direct regulation we have further narrowed our analysis to the role of the federal government as regulator.

Book Policy Analysis in Canada

Download or read book Policy Analysis in Canada written by Laurent Dobuzinskis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of what some academics refer to as 'the policy analysis movement' represents an effort to reform certain aspects of government behaviour. The policy analysis movement is the result of efforts made by actors inside and outside formal political decision-making processes to improve policy outcomes by applying systematic evaluative rationality to the development and implementation of policy options. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of the many ways in which the policy analysis movement has been conducted, and to what effect, in Canadian governments and, for the first time, in business associations, labour unions, universities, and other non-governmental organizations. Editors Laurent Dobuzinskis, Michael Howlett, and David Laycock have brought together a wide range of contributors to address questions such as: What do policy analysts do? What techniques and approaches do they use? What is their influence on policy-making in Canada? Is there a policy analysis deficit? What norms and values guide the work done by policy analysts working in different institutional settings? Contributors focus on the sociology of policy analysis, demonstrating how analysts working in different organizations tend to have different interests and to utilize different techniques. They compare and analyze the significance of these different styles and approaches, and speculate about their impact on the policy process.

It stresses not only substantive findings but also the methodology of prediction research, and demonstrates how similar issues arise in many applications: problems of research design, the choice of predictor and criterion variables, methods of selecting and combining variables into a prediction instrument, measures of predictive efficiency, and external validity or generalizability. The collection includes research from the United States, Canada, and Great Britain and will be of interest to an international audience of policy makers, practitioners, academics, and researchers.

Book Examining Political Violence

Download or read book Examining Political Violence written by David Lowe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of works, some previously published as articles in the journal Police Practice and Research, this book provides both conceptual analysis and case studies, exploring historical and sociopolitical contexts of conflicts in order to help readers better understand these themes. The book defines the concepts of terrorism and radicalization, discusses countering terrorism through intelligence gathering, and examines different policing models. The conclusions drawn from these findings may assist in combating terrorism and political violence around the world. This book is a co-publication with the International Police Executive Symposium (IPES).
