Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though it will never be possible to establish an exact number, scholars of the German-American press have estimated that about 5000 newspapers and periodicals have been published in German in more than 300 years of German immigration to the United States. This collection of essays on various aspects of the German-American press shows clearly the role of that press in the process of acculturation of German immigrants on the one hand, and on the other, retention of some of the old institutions, most notably the German language. Bracketed between articles on the press of the colonial period and that of the present is a rich collection of essays on various aspects of the topic. While no one volume can adequately deal with all, or even nearly all, the aspects of the phenomenon, this contribution to the field of German-American Studies does present a rather broad spectrum of topics and, thus, serves as both a source of valuable information and an introduction to further work.

Book The subfield of diplomatic history and its influence on the research of German American relations

Download or read book The subfield of diplomatic history and its influence on the research of German American relations written by Christopher Reichow and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject History - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of Oregon, language: English, abstract: Diplomatic history has been suffering an old-fashioned image within the historical science for a rather long time. Although there were no fewer conflicts in the world in the last decades, the attention of the historical profession to the research on official documents is quite low. As evidence of that, the number of diplomatic historians at most history departments around the world has shrunk continuously. Critics speak of outmoded methods, which are compared to new methods in modern subfields. It is their opinion that this subfield is unlikely to generate anything very creative. In spite of this accusation, the subfield of diplomatic history has unambiguously changed its face in recent years. Diplomatic historians have widened their perspective and do not only analyze diplomacy anymore. They deal with a bulk of new topics: like race, gender, or approaches borrowed from cultural studies. Traditional approaches are still dominating the field, but new questions and new sources are increasingly used. Michael Hogan describes this development as a cultural turn. It is a wide-spread belief that the concept of diplomatic history has widened. Governments and diplomatic circles have to engage in a broader range of new issues. Thus, historical

Book Transatlantic Encounters Public uses and misuses of history in Europe and the United States

Download or read book Transatlantic Encounters Public uses and misuses of history in Europe and the United States written by David Keith Adams and published by Vu University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions about fundamental historical events of the past century have invaded the public domain; Public opinion and policy-makers ask framers of the public image of the past to provide guidance, reassurance, and legitimisation. Increasing social heterogeneity and cultural difference force us to revise our traditional concepts of culture and examine the public, social and pedagogical implications of multiculturalism in an explicitly comparative perspective. This book explores how history has been used to support or oppose the political orders of our century as well as its great themes, and how historians have dealt with issues of scholarly objectivity, personal beliefs, and public commitment.

Book The German American Encounter

Download or read book The German American Encounter written by Frank Trommler and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Germans, the largest immigration group in the United States, contributed to the shaping of American society and left their mark on many areas from religion and education to food, farming, political and intellectual life, Americans have been instrumental in shaping German democracy after World War II. Both sides can claim to be part of each other's history, and yet the question arises whether this claim indicates more than a historical interlude in the forming of the Atlantic civilization. In this volume some of the leading historians, social scientists and literary scholars from both sides of the Atlantic have come together to investigate, for the first time in a broad interdisciplinary collaboration, the nexus of these interactions in view of current and future challenges to German-American relations.

Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Chicana/o Studies is a unique interdisciplinary resource for students, libraries, and researchers interested in the largest and most rapidly growing racial-ethnic community in the United States and elsewhere which can either be identified as Chicano, Latino, Hispanic, or Mexican-American. Structured around seven comprehensive themes, the volume is for students of American studies, the Social Sciences, and the Humanities. The volume is organized around seven critical domains in Chicana/o Studies: Chicana/o History and Social Movements Borderlands, Global Migrations, Employment, and Citizenship Cultural Production in Global and Local Settings Chicana/o Identities Schooling, Language, and Literacy Violence, Resistance, and Empowerment International Perspectives The Handbook will stress the importance of the historical origins of the Chicana/o Studies field. Starting from myth of origins, Aztlán, alleged cradle of the Chicana/o people lately substantiated by the findings of archaeology and anthropology, over Spanish/Indigenous relations until the present time. Essays will explore cultural and linguistic hybridism and showcase artistic practices (visual arts, music, and dance) through popular (folklore) or high culture achievements (museums, installations) highlighting the growth of a critical perspective grounded on key theoretical formulations including borderlands theories, intersectionalities, critical race theory, and cultural analysis.
