Book Personality Research Methods and Theory

Download or read book Personality Research Methods and Theory written by Patrick E. Shrout and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald W. Fiske's professional life and collaborations are themselves a textbook in the development of the field of personality. From the field's early origins in personnel selection, rating accuracy, and psychotherapy outcomes, to its current status of theoretical and methodological maturity -- complete with mid-life crises -- the field has been fundamentally changed by Fiske's work, and the changes have influenced generations of scholars. This festschrift is a celebration of Fiske's impact, but not merely of his impact on the history of personality research. Instead, the volume focuses on ongoing debates and issues that have been framed or influenced by Fiske's work. The festschrift's three sections are organized around three themes in Fiske's writings -- themes that also correspond to three periods in his career. This volume examines current thinking about what can be known about personality, how constructs relevant to personality psychology are best measured, and how to approach specific research problems in personality and related fields. The contributors create an eminent cross-section of the development and current status of personality methods. In addition to Fiske's eminent contemporaries, the contributors to this volume include Fiske's former students, collaborators, and his two children, both of whom are behavioral scientists. The accomplishments of his students, colleagues, and children testifies to the range of psychologists who have benefited from his scholarly and practical wisdom. This collection is a valuable textbook for an advanced graduate course as well as appealing as a scholarly resource. Many of the contributors are renown psychological leaders who have made available their latest original thoughts. The book concludes with an essay by Fiske offering his perspective on the central themes: behavioral and social science metatheory, methods, and strategies.

Book Toward a Spiritual Research Paradigm

Download or read book Toward a Spiritual Research Paradigm written by Jing Lin and published by IAP. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality and spiritual experiences have been the bedrock of every civilization and together form one of the highest mechanisms for making sense of the world for billions of people. Current research paradigms, due to their limitation to empirical, sensory, psychologically, or culturally constructed realities, fail to provide a framework for exploring this essential area of human experience. The development of a spiritual research paradigm will provide researchers from the social sciences and education the tools and abilities to systematically explore fundamental questions regarding human spiritual experiences and spiritual growth. A spiritual research paradigm requires an ontology that considers all reality to be multidimensional, interconnected, and interdependent. It requires an epistemology that integrates knowing from outer sources as well as inner contemplation, acknowledging our integration of soul and spirit with the body and mind. Three additional aspects are useful to a spiritual research paradigm: axiology, methodology, and teleology. An axiology concerns what is valued, good, and ethical. A methodology is the appropriate approach to systematic inquiry. A fifth and less frequently mentioned aspect is teleology, an explanation of the goal or end (telos) to which new knowledge is applied, such as gaining wisdom and truth, touching the divine, increasing inner peace, exploring hidden dimensions, or improving society. This book takes the first step to develop such a research paradigm. We draw from world spiritual traditions as well as scholarship that has arisen from contemplative practices. We also attempt to build a bridge between science and spirituality. Spiritual research is not necessarily opposed to scientific research; in fact, each can shed light on the other.

Book The Whiplash Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Whiplash Encyclopedia written by Robert Ferrari and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 2006 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the second edition of The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Robert Ferrari revisits the notion that whiplash is an example of illness induced by society, in general, and by physicians in particular. The second edition takes the work out of understanding all the different dimensions of whiplash, be it why some people get chronic neck pain and others do not, what causes jaw pain, what therapies work and which do not, how we can understand the effect that psychosocial factors have on recovery, what effect litigation and insurance systems have on recovery, and many other topics. The Whiplash Encyclopedia leaves no topic on whiplash uncovered, and can be used in any medicolegal practice. The next time you have a question about whiplash, the answer is likely to be found in The Whiplash Encyclopedia. The Whiplash Encyclopedia, Second Edition explores new theories being heralded to explain chronic whiplash; discusses Central Sensitization; and includes a new chapter in whiplash mythology. In addition, it expands on the knowledge of what causes (and what does not cause) the many neurological and cognitive symptoms reported by whiplash patients. The second edition also investigates the Whiplash Cultures and countries where chronic whiplash is epidemic and examines those cultures by laying them next to countries that, despite having motor vehicle collisions as frequently as elsewhere in the world, and frequently having physicians diagnose acute whiplash, rarely or uncommonly has anyone taking the stage as chronic whiplash characters.

Book The Hormone Factor in Mental Health

Download or read book The Hormone Factor in Mental Health written by Linda M. Rio and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2013-09-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endocrine imbalances can cause a whole host of physical and mental health problems. Yet, there is currently no definitive source of information that shows how hormones can bridge the gap between mental health and medical health modalities. This book is a bold crossover between the disciplines of medical and mental health, exploring the understanding that some of the major mental diagnoses belong not only to the field of mental health but also to that of medicine. Clients with depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, infertility, suicidality, anger and rage, fatigue, apathy, cognitive impairments, confusion, eating disorders, and poor body image may actually be presenting symptoms of hormonal disorders. Beginning with patient stories that display the devastating effects of misdiagnosis and the struggle to obtain the correct treatment, it provides members of the mental health profession with an authentic understanding of the impact of endocrine imbalances and disorders. With contributions from some of the world's most respected physicians, psychiatrists and psychotherapists, it provides accurate medical and psychological information about hormone imbalances and disorders, how to recognise the signs in patients, and how to treat them effectively. A comprehensive resource that provides all the information needed to identify endocrine disorders in patients successfully; this book will be of immeasurable value to clinical psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, doctors, nurses and mental health clinicians.

Book Paradigms in Theory Construction

Download or read book Paradigms in Theory Construction written by Luciano L'Abate and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the field of psychology there is a proliferation of paradigms, theories, models, and dimensions without an underlying conceptual framework or theory. This conclusion has been reached by representatives of many different psychological specialties. In response to this inconsistency this book presents a hierarchical framework about important theoretical issues that are present in psychological thinking. These issues concern definitions of three major theoretical concepts in theory and practice: (a) paradigms, (b) theories, and (c) models. It focuses on defining, comparing, and contrasting these three conceptual terms. This framework clarifies differences among paradigms, theories, and models, terms which have become increasingly confused in the psychological literature. Paradigms are usually confused with theories or with models while theories are confused with models. Examples of misuses of these terms suggest the need for a hierarchical structure that views paradigms as conceptual constructions overseeing a variety of psychological theories and verifiable models.
