Book Innovations in rural and agriculture finance

This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everywhere in the world, small agricultural producers are entrepreneurs, traders, investors, and consumers, all rolled into one. In all these roles, small agricultural households constantly seek to use available financial instruments to improve their productivity and secure the best possible consumption and investment choices for their families. But the package of financial services available to small farmers in developing countries is severely limited, especially for those living in remote areas with no access to basic market infrastructure. When poor people have limited saving or borrowing options, their investment plans are stifled and it becomes harder for them to break out of poverty. If households have no access to insurance and are unable to accumulate small savings that enable them to pay for household and business expenses, especially during lean seasons, they are forced to limit their exposure to risk, even if high returns are expected, once again making the pathway out of poverty more arduous than necessary. Inadequate access to financial services is thus part of what is often called the “poverty trap.”

This book is a good synthesis of the evolution and development of the domain from a theoretical as well as practical perspective. It is a fundamental literature on rural finance mechanisms as well as financial inclusion initiatives in India. Although the field of rural credit is vast and specialised, the authors have carefully picked up the most important components of this domain, which will be immensely useful to readers to get first-hand knowledge on the subject. While it traces the important institutional mechanisms of rural and agricultural credit in India, it also discusses the emerging paradigms of rural finance and ICT interventions, which can potentially restructure delivery mechanisms to encourage product innovation for serving the financial needs of those at the bottom of the pyramid population. The authors have attempted to cover every important aspect of rural finance by incorporating relevant discussions on institutions, governance, policy framework, schemes, and practices along with issues and concerns in the area of agricultural finance, rural credit and financial inclusion. The text has been woven in a cohesive manner so that the reader can appreciate the historic milestones while comprehending the present situation. Each chapter has been pinned to the larger developmental context to drive home the key issues concerning this field.

This book was released on 2002-12-23 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the contributions of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) between 1993 and 2001 to analysis, outreach, capacity building, and training related to the role of rural finance in poverty reduction. The IFPRI multicountry research project on Rural Finance Policies for Food Security for the Poor involved data-intensive research by more than 14 research fellows on the impacts of access to rural financial services in countries. This report examines the contribution of the program within four countries where microfinance research and outreach activities were conducted and its contribution to global knowledge about rural finance and food security....It addresses issues of critical importance: (1) does microfinance have an impact on the poor, and is this impact achieved through better risk management as well as increased income generation?, (2) does the structure of financial service providers matter in supporting this impact?, and (3) how can the microfinance industry be made more sustainable?.... Malawi, Bangladesh, Ghana and Nepal were selected for analysis of research impacts." -- taken from Authors' Abstract.

Book An Investigation Into the Determinants of Access to Finance in Rural Areas of Katsina State

Download or read book An Investigation Into the Determinants of Access to Finance in Rural Areas of Katsina State written by Saifullahi Sani Ibrahim and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (-), course: Economics, language: English, abstract: Access to finance is widely acknowledged as a catalyst for the reduction of poverty in rural areas. Along this line, this study investigates the determinants of access to finance in rural areas in Katsina state. A cross-sectional primary data was collected via questionnaire from a sample of 384 respondents. This study used probit modelling approach to analyse the factors that influence access to finance. The study revealed that collateral, financial literacy and gender have significant positive influence on access to finance, while age has an insignificant positive influence on access to finance. In contrast, interest rate and transaction cost have significant negative influence on access to finance. Thus, the study concluded that with the prevailing banking arrangement where collaterals are required and banks charge interest and also some level of literacy is required, rural dwellers will continue to find it difficult in relating with conventional banks. Therefore, the study recommended that rural dwellers should organise themselves into Credit Cooperative Societies, which could be used as Informal Financial Unit for Linkage Banking arrangement. The government (at all level) can also use these associations to channel their agricultural credit. It is also recommended that legal framework, be provided, that will pave way for the establishment of full-pledged interest-free banks (Islamic Bank) or conversion of existing commercial banks in rural areas into interest-free banks, since most of the rural dwellers do not like taking usurious loans because of their religious inclination.

Book China s Rural Financial System

Download or read book China s Rural Financial System written by Yuepeng Zhao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the credit needs and the borrowing behaviour of rural households in China in recent years. It is based on in-depth analysis of the status of households’ indebtedness and borrowing behaviour; the performance of Rural Credit Cooperatives (RCCs), as well as resources of informal finance. Before 2006, RCCs are virtually the only source of formal credit for rural households in China and were subject to a series of reforms from 1996 to 2003. The reforms aimed to transform RCCs into market-oriented institutions and, more importantly, help them meet the increasing demands of farmers for varied financial services, and thereby contribute effectively to economic transformation in rural China. Based on a micro-study of three villages, at different stages of development with dissimilar economic characteristics in Jiangxi province, this book investigates the sources of finance, formal and informal, in rural areas and the different types of credit that farmers require. It examines the patterns of credit required by rural households at different stages of agricultural processes, and the institutions from which they obtain loans. It demonstrates the importance of innovative institutional arrangements in rural China and new instruments that give farmers access to formal rural financial markets and enable them to utilize credit effectively, concluding that further reforms to RCCs are necessary for RCCs to be truly effective.

Book Strategic Alliances to Scale Up Financial Services in Rural Areas

Download or read book Strategic Alliances to Scale Up Financial Services in Rural Areas written by Joselito S. Gallardo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Business firms have employed strategic alliances with other firms to effectively manage costs, overcome resource and technology constraints, and enhance competitive position. The principle and practice of strategic alliances can be applied as well for productive and beneficial institutional collaborations in rural financial markets to expand the array of financial products and to scale up access of rural households and micro-businesses to financial services. Strategic alliances comprise a new theme in rural finance. The institutions in the study used strategic alliances to tap new capital resources, manage transaction costs, access banking technology and infrastructure and acquire new skills to provide an expanding array of financial services to wider markets. The authors carefully examine the experiences of selected rural finance institutions and their strategic allies or development partners in Guatemala, the Philippines, Ghana and India to draw out the main findings and share the lessons that may be gainfully applied in other country settings. The study addressed a number of key questions: - What motivated the rural finance institution to structure its alliance or partnership with a bank, commercial or development organization? - How are gains from and costs of alliances and partnerships shared between collaborating institutions? - What are the key elements that make partnerships or alliances successful, and which conditions lead to unproductive ones? - Which financial products and services are best introduced through strategic alliances?"
