Download or read book Research on Ocular Laser Thresholds written by Arthur Vassiliadis and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of experimental investigations of threshold levels for small retinal lesions are presented. Data for rhesus monkeys include thresholds for a Q-switched neodymium laser, both in the macula and in the paramacular area. In addition, extensive data are presented for argon, helium-neon, and neodymium-YAG laser damage threshold. Exposures of human volunteers to various lasers are reported. The lasers used were Q-switched neodymium and ruby lasers, a long-pulse ruby laser, and an argon laser. A report on the histopathology of retinal injury in rhesus monkeys due to Q-switched neodymium and argon lasers is included. (Author).

Book Trends in Retinal Damage Thresholds from 100 Millisecond Near Infrared Laser Radiation Exposures A Study at 1 110 1 130 1 150 and 1 319 Nm

Download or read book Trends in Retinal Damage Thresholds from 100 Millisecond Near Infrared Laser Radiation Exposures A Study at 1 110 1 130 1 150 and 1 319 Nm written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retinal damage thresholds from 100-millisecond exposures to laser radiation for wavelengths between 1,100 and 1,350nm have never previously been established. We sought to determine the retinal damage threshold for 100- millisecond exposures of near-infrared (NIR) laser radiation wavelengths at 1,110, 1,130, 1,150, and 1,319 nm. These data were then used to create trends for retinal damage thresholds over the 1,100?1,350nm NIR region based upon linear absorption of laser radiation in ocular media and chromatic dispersion of the eye.

Book Study of Ocular Effects of Chronic Exposure to Laser Radiation

Download or read book Study of Ocular Effects of Chronic Exposure to Laser Radiation written by T. Lawwill and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project is a study of the effects of long term exposure of the eye to laser radiation. The data is for four hour, wide field exposures at levels below immediate damage threshold for rabbit and monkey eyes. The report compares the thresholds for white light and the 514.5 and 488.0 nm lines of the argon laser. From this information a hypothesis is proposed as to the mechanism of damage and methods are proposed to test this hypothesis. If the mechanism can be established, generalizations can be made for different conditions and different light sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of experimental investigations to determine threshold levels for doubled neodymium and ruby lasers are presented. The experimental animals were rhesus monkeys. Threshold levels for retinal damage caused by the doubled long-pulsed and Q-switched neodymium laser are reported, and results of experiments to determine retinal damage and lens damage caused by the Q-switched ruby laser are presented. In addition, theoretical considerations and calculations for retinal damage are discussed and compared with experimental results. (Author).

Book Safety with Lasers and Other Optical Sources

Download or read book Safety with Lasers and Other Optical Sources written by D. H. Sliney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly a decade aga a general review article on the evaluation of optical radia tion hazards was published in Applied Optics (Sliney and Freasier, 1973). This arti cle received many favorable comments but also prompted many inquiries regarding specific optical hazard problems. From this it became evident that a monograph rather than a supplemental and expanded article was needed to fill this literature gap relating to laser and optical radiation hazards. The present work is designed to fill that gap, and is structured to permit either classroom or self-study use. Much of the material in this book was developed in eonnection with short courses on laser safety and radiometry in which we have participated, as weIl as from our previous articles. In particular, the sequenee of chapters is based upon the experiences which we have had in lecturing in courses with different schedules. One of the great difficulties in developing a text of this nature is that a broad, multidisciplinary background must be included in order that the reader can comprehend all of the subjeet matter readily. For this reason, the material presented on anatomy and physiology is orien ted toward the engineer or physical scientist, while the review material on basic optical physics is intended more for the physician or life scientist.

Book Threshold lesion temperatures in laser irradiated rabbit eyes

Download or read book Threshold lesion temperatures in laser irradiated rabbit eyes written by Garrett Douglas Polhamus and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to measure threshold temperatures corresponding to the formation of minimum ophthalmoscopically visible lesions induced in rabbit fundi by a ten-second exposure from an argon C.W. laser (4880A). The posterior pole of the eye was surgically exposed and a specially designed microthermocouple with a 20-micron diameter tip was inserted into the ocular fundus to measure temperature rises. The mean threshold temperature for 30 measurements in 13 rabbits was 54C. System error was estimated at 5% of temperature rise, or slightly less than 1C.

Book Wavelength Dependence of Ocular Damage Thresholds in the Near IR to Far IR Transition Region Proposed Revisions to MPEs

Download or read book Wavelength Dependence of Ocular Damage Thresholds in the Near IR to Far IR Transition Region Proposed Revisions to MPEs written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of a series of IR laser-induced ocular damage studies conducted over the past decade. The studies examined retinal, lens, and corneal effects of laser exposures in the near-IR to far-IR transition region (wavelengths from 1.3- 1.4 m with exposure durations ranging from Q-switched to cw). The corneal and retinal damage thresholds are tabulated for all pulsewidth regimes and the wavelength dependence of the IR thresholds is discussed and contrasted to laser safety standard maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits. The analysis suggests that the current laser standard MPEs could be beneficially revised to: (1) relax the IR MPEs over wavelength ranges where unusually high safety margins may unintentionally hinder applications of recently developed military and telecommunications laser systems; (2) replace step-function discontinuities in the IR MPEs by continuously varying analytical functions of wavelength and pulsewidth which more closely follow the trends of the experimental retinal and corneal ED50 threshold data; and (3) result in an overall simplification of the safety standard MPEs over the wavelength range from 1.2 m to 2.6 m. A specific proposal for amending the IR MPEs over this wavelength range is presented.

Book Nonlinear Optical Effects on Retinal Damage Thresholds in the 1200 1400 Nm Wavelength Range

Download or read book Nonlinear Optical Effects on Retinal Damage Thresholds in the 1200 1400 Nm Wavelength Range written by Francesco Jozac Echeverria and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent changes in the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits for near-infrared (NIR) laser exposures are analyzed in light of nonlinear optical phenomena. We have evaluated the thresholds for supercontinuum (SC) generation for ultra-short (femtosecond) laser exposures in the NIR region and compared these values with the MPEs listed in the American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers 2014 Edition (ANSI Z136.1-2014). Due to the strong increase in ocular absorption in the 1.2 to 1.4 micrometer (i.e. 1200-1400 nm) range, evaluation of the SC generation phenomenon is necessary because any shift in laser energy within the eye to shorter wavelengths (i.e. greater frequency) could lead to unforeseen increases in hazards to the retina. The findings of this research do in fact indicate a shift in laser energy to shorter wavelengths for femtosecond pulsed lasers. In addition, an analysis involving spectral measurements through a water cuvette leads to estimations involving the eye configuration that show radiant exposures exceeding the ANSI thresholds for visible wavelengths. The implications of these findings are such that enough NIR energy is converted to visible energy near the retina when dealing with femtosecond pulsed lasers, warranting further studies in examining what the effects caused by nonlinear optical phenomena due to ultrashort pulsed lasers have on MPE thresholds established for eye safety.
