Book excerpt: This report covers studies of ion molecule reactions done with mass selection of the primary ion beam. There are five separate sections: (1) The cross section for the important reaction O(+)+N2 yields NO(+)+N has been measured from about 0.5 e.v. to 35 e.v. It has a broad maximum of 4 x 10 to the 16th power sq cm at 13 e.v. and, very surprisingly, drops off rapidly above this energy and, more slowly below this energy. (2) Isotope effects in reactions of HD(+) ions with HD molecules and rare gas atoms have been studied. (3) Some theoretical speculations on the importance of quantum-mechanical resonance forces in ion-molecule reactions are given. (4) Cross sections for dissociative ionization of N2 and N2O by rare gas ion impact have been measured. (5) Reactions, including dissociative ionization, of rare gas ions with N2O, C2H4, and D2 have been studied. (Author).

Book excerpt: With the availability of numerical techniques for solving an extensive set of nonlinear differential equations and high-speed computers for performing the calculations, interest in solving the unrestricted reaction-rate equations is growing among ionospheric researchers. In view of this a refinement is given of the techniques previously developed in PB-163 071 and AD-424 173. The computer code is written to solve the photochemical behavior of 15 atmospheric species; these species are electrons, O( - ), O2( - ), O3( - ), NO2( - ), O(+), O2(+), N2(+), NO(+), NO, N, NO2, O3, N2O, and O. Built into the code are 168 reactions that can conceivably take place among these constituents. Several examples of the results obtained using the code are presented, including the buildup of ionization from zero concentrations at altitudes in the D and E regions and the deionization of an atmosphere with high initial electron densities. The diurnal variation of the atmospheric constituents is also presented along with profiles for the above-mentioned species from 60 km to 120 km. The computer codes are included in their entirety with complete explanations on their usage. (Author).

Book excerpt: If our eyes were radio rather than optical wide-band detectors it is well known that for us the brightest object in the sky would still be the Sun; that planets, stars and the Milky Way would still shine feebly (and that we would still occasionally be blinded by man-made sources). What is less well known is that quite a different earthbound overcast would hover about us, with its climatic zones, its seasonal changes, its unpredictable storms and scintillating transparence. To be sure, we can get a sort of glimpse of this peculiar type of weather when we tune our receiver to radio broad casting from some remote spot, or photograph the Earth from space at certain specific wavelengths. Nevertheless no one has ever looked at the ionized shroud of the Earth without the help of sophisticated apparatus, and this is one of the reasons why in this domain the phenomena are not easily abstracted from the use of specific techniques. For generations, the study of the ionosphere has been deeply interwoven with the practice of radio communication and detection. Today however, ionospheric physics is best thought of as a branch of space physics; that part of physics which deals with processes at work in the solar system and methods developed for its exploration.

The recombination studies have included the species 02+, NO+, NH4+, H3, HC0+, N2H+ and CH5+, and the attachment studies have included the species CC14, CC13F, CC12F2, CHC13, C12, SF6, C-C7F14, CH3Br, CF3Br, CH2Br2 and CH3I. Some ion molecule reactions have also been studied as a function of temperature and of ion-molecule centre-of mass energy usign a variable-temperature selective ion flow drift tube (VT-SIFDT).

Book excerpt: The ionosphere of the Earth has been actively studied since the 1920's, following the discovery of ground radio-sounding. By means of this method results were ohtained by an international network of ionospheric stations, in particular, by the successful implementation of a number of rigorously planned international scientific research programs,'" enabling the collection of extensive experimental material on some of the most important parameters of the ionosphere - the critical freLjuencies of E-, Fl and F2-layers. Comprehensive analyses of these observation data give a fairly complete picture of the various changes taking place in the principal ionospheric layers at different points on our globe. Another important aspect of the study of the ionosphere, which has been in progress for the past three decades, is an extensive program of in situ determinations of the various physical parameters - first using rockets, and subsequently artificial satellites. The data thus obtained on the principal ionizing agent - short-wave solar radiation - and on the physical conditions prevailing in the upper atmosphere and in the ionosphere at different altitudes, allow the proposal of a self-consistent mechanism of ionosphere formation. A general outline of the theory of ionosphere formation at different altitudes is now complete. Its application to specific cases, dependent on a more accurate determination of input parameters to give solutions valid for a definite set of conditions etc., is yet to be accomplished. The use of artificial satellites in cosmic research yielded abundant scientific data.
