Book Research on Electroweak and Flavor Symmetry Breaking

Download or read book Research on Electroweak and Flavor Symmetry Breaking written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract of Project Summary, as written in August 2012: The objective of this research is the primary one of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva: the discovery and study of the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). This is the mission of the LHC's two large general-purpose detectors, ATLAS and CMS. Lane's approach to this goal assumes that a new strong interaction at the electroweak energy scale of 100's of GeV, called ``technicolor'' (TC), is responsible for triggering EWSB. He is one of the developers of technicolor, particularly of its flavor-physics component, called extended technicolor (ETC). The TC/ETC theory of this physics provides not only the dynamics of EWSB, but also an understanding of the types (flavors) of quarks and leptons and of their masses and mixing. The main thrust of this research involves close collaboration with members of ATLAS and CMS to search for the signatures of TC/ETC that are most accessible experimentally. These are new, rather heavy, spin-one particles -- technivector bosons ($\tro$, $\tom$, $\ta$) -- readily produced at the LHC and decaying into electroweak bosons, $\gamma, W, Z$, and spin-zero bosons called technipions, $\tpi$. If these particles exist, they hold the key to understanding flavor physics. A very important recent development at the LHC is the discovery of a new 125-GeV boson decaying into $\gamma\gamma$, $ZZ$ and $WW$. This particle is widely suspected to be the long-sought Higgs boson, a basic component of the so-called standard model of EWSB. But, from a purely theoretical standpoint, this resolution to the origin of EWSB is very unsatisfactory. Moreover, there are interesting and possibly significant discrepancies of the data with this interpretation. Lane and collaborators are proposing that this boson is, in fact, a special kind of technipion. He is also working with ATLAS experimentalists to test this hypothesis. The LHC data to be collected and analyzed by ATLAS and CMS over the next year likely will determine whether the particle is a Higgs boson, a technipion, or something else entirely.

Book Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this thesis the author contributes to the development of a non-mainstream but long-standing approach to electroweak symmetry breaking based on an analogy with superconductivity. Electroweak symmetry breaking is assumed to be caused by dynamically generated masses of typical fermions, i.e., of quarks and leptons, which in turn assumes a new dynamics between quarks and leptons. Primarily it is designed to generate fermion masses and electroweak symmetry breaking is an automatic consequence. After the summary of the topic, the first main part of the thesis addresses the question as to whether the masses of known quarks and leptons provide sufficiently strong sources of electroweak symmetry breaking. It is demonstrated that neutrino masses subject to the seesaw mechanism are indispensable ingredients. The other two parts of the thesis are dedicated to the presentation of two particular models: The first model is based on the new strong Yukawa dynamics and serves as a platform for studying the ability to reproduce fermion masses. The second, more realistic model introduces a flavor gauge dynamics and its phenomenological consequences are studied. Even though, in the past, this type of models has already been of some interest, following the discovery of the Standard-Model-like Higgs particle, it is regaining its relevance.

Book Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking

Download or read book Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking written by Edward Farhi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1982 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of original papers on dynamical gauge symmetry breaking, and is intended for graduate students and researchers in theoretical physics (elementary particle physics and others) who have an understanding of basic quantum field theory. The book can serve as a research text for those requiring an introduction to dynamical gauge symmetry breaking and as a reference text for active researchers. The important papers in the field that are included deal with attempts to apply the ideas to realistic models of elementary particle interactions. A historical critique by the editors provides an introductory review.

Book Study of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector for the LHC

Download or read book Study of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector for the LHC written by Rafael Delgado López and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we revisit the prospects of a strongly interacting theory for the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector of the Standard Model, after the discovery of a Higgs-like boson at 125GeV. As the LHC constrains new phenomena near the Higgs mass, it is natural to assume that the new scale is of order 1TeV. This mass gap might indicate strongly interacting new physics. This work is of quite general validity and model independence. With only a few parameters at the Lagrangian level, multiple channels (possibly with new physics resonances) are describable, and many BSM theories can be treated. It will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers, and is accessible to newcomers in the field. Many calculations are given in full detail and there are ample graphical illustrations.

Download or read book Minimal Dynamical Symmetry Breaking of the Electroweak Interactions and M Sub Top written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review the recent idea of a mechanism for breaking the electroweak interactions which relies upon the formation of condensates involving the conventional quarks and leptons. In particular, such a scheme would indicate that the top quark is heavy, greater than or of order 200 GeV, and gives further predictions for the Higgs boson mass. It may be imbedded either into a GUT setting using supersymmetry or applied to a fourth generation with new strong TEV scale flavor-interactions. 13 refs., 2 tabs.

Book Flavor Physics and the TeV Scale

Download or read book Flavor Physics and the TeV Scale written by George W. S. Hou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?avor sector carries the largest number of parameters in the Standard Model of particle physics. With no evident symmetry principle behind its existence, it is not as well understood as the SU(3)×SU(2)×U(1) gauge interactions. Yet it tends to be underrated, sometimes even ignored, by the erudite. This is especially so on the verge of the LHC era, where the exploration of the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking at the high energy frontier would soon be the main thrust of the ?eld. Yet, the question of “Who ordered the muon?” by I. I. Rabi lingers. We do not understand why there is “family” (or generation) replication. That three generations are needed to have CP violation is a partial answer. We do not understand why there are only three generations, but Nature insists on (just about) only three active neutrinos. But then the CP violation with three generations fall far short of what is needed to generate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We do not understand why most fermions are so light on the weak symmetry breaking scale (v. e. v. ), yet the third-generation top quark is a v. e. v. scale particle. We do not understand why quarks and leptons look so different, in particular, why neutrinos are rather close to being massless, but then have (at least two) near maximal mixing angles. We shall not, however, concern ourselves with the neutrino sector. It has a life of its own.

Book Flavor Physics For The Millennium Tasi 2000 Proceedings Of The Theoretical Advanced Study Institute In Elementary Particle Physics

Download or read book Flavor Physics For The Millennium Tasi 2000 Proceedings Of The Theoretical Advanced Study Institute In Elementary Particle Physics written by Jonathon L Rosner and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-09-04 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the broad subject of flavor physics, embracing the question of what distinguishes one type of elementary particles from another. The articles range from the forefront of formal theory (treating the physics of extra dimensions) to details of particle detectors. Although special emphasis is placed on the physics of kaons, charmed and beauty particles, top quarks, and neutrinos, the articles also dealing with electroweak physics, quantum chromodynamics, supersymmetry, and dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Violations of fundamental symmetries such as time reversal invariance are discussed in the context of neutral kaons, beauty particles, electric dipole moments, and parity violation in atoms. The physics of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and of quark masses are described in some detail, both from the standpoint of present and future experimental knowledge and from a more fundamental viewpoint, where physicists are still searching for the correct theory.
