Book Research on Dispersion Strengthened Cobalt base Alloys

Download or read book Research on Dispersion Strengthened Cobalt base Alloys written by A. L. Mincher and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cobalt-base alloys containing fine ThO2 dispersions were processed to round bar by powder metallurgy techniques and evaluated for physical and mechanical properties. The ThO2 dispersion increased the sluggishness of the allotropic transformation in cobalt. Strength at elevated temperature was improved by (1) increased ThO2, (2) a minor (0.2%) zirconium addition, and (3) increasing amount of secondary work. Oxidation resistance of the Co-ThO2 and Co-Ni-ThO2 alloys was similar to pure cobalt with scaling rates an order of magnitude greater than TD Nickel at 2200F. A chromium addition improved oxidation behavior. Preliminary evaluation on the chromium-containing alloys gave 2000 F tensile strengths of 10,000 psi or less, lower than on the alloys without chromium. Certain of these alloys with chromium recrystallized on high temperature annealing, and this was accompanied by an increase in 2000 F tensile strength. (Author).

Book excerpt: Cobalt-base alloys strengthened with fine ThO2 dispersions were processed by powder metallurgy techniques to round bar and evaluated for physical and mechanical properties. Alloys were studied with varying levels of Ni (10 to 30%), Cr (10-30%), Fe (20%), ThO2 (1 to 4%), and Zr (0.2%). The Co-10Ni-2ThO2-0.2Zr alloy had the best combination of fabricability and high temperature strength in the non-chromium containing alloys. For 100 hour life in vacuum at 2000 F, rupture strength of 85% swaged bar of this alloy was>16,000 psi in swaged (find grained) bar and 15,000 psi in recrystallized bar. Tensile strength of annealed bar at 1400 F was improved by a molybdenum addition from 39,000 psi in the Co-10Ni-2ThO2-0.2Zr alloy to 104,000 psi in the Co-15Ni-15Mo-4Th02 alloy. High temperature strength of the oxidation-resistant chromium containing alloys increased with increasing grain size and with increasing ThO2 loading. The Co-Ni-Cr-ThO2 compositions gave the best high temperature strengths. In particular, the Co-20Ni-18Cr-4ThO2 alloy had tensile strength of up to 27,000 psi at 2000 F, and rupture strength was 15,000 psi for 100 hour life in air at 2000 F. The Co-20Fe-20Cr-4ThO2 alloy had a tensile strength of 16,400 psi at 2000 F. The Co-Cr-ThO2 alloys all had low tensile strength (

Book Development of Dispersion Strengthened Nickel and Cobalt Base Alloys

Download or read book Development of Dispersion Strengthened Nickel and Cobalt Base Alloys written by Richard F. Cheney and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two methods were compared for preparing dispersion-strengthened nickel- and cobalt-base alloys. A technique of selectively reducing intimately mixed oxides, which were prepared by atomizing and drying a solution of the components, was more successful than one involving the coating of dispersoid particles with the matrix by vapor deposition. The conditions were determined for preparing Ni-15Mo-4ThO2 and Co-15Mo-4ThO2 powders by selective reduction. Hot pressing, hydrogen sintering, and powder rolling were evaluated for powder consolidation. The conditions for successful rolling, extrusion, and forging were investigated for Ni-15Mo-4ThO2. Process temperatures above 1200C promoted ThO2 growth to 400-500A. Deformation-anneal sequences were critical to good strength at elevated temperatures. Ultimate strengths of 21 ksi at 1800F were obtained and higher strengths seem possible. Molybdenum considerably improved the matrix strength to at least 1400F.

Book Investigation of Processing Microstructures and Properties of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Cobalt Alloy Extruded Shapes

Download or read book Investigation of Processing Microstructures and Properties of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Cobalt Alloy Extruded Shapes written by R. Grierson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study describes the development of an Oxide Dispersion Strengthened, Cobalt base alloy with the nominal composition of Co-20Ni-18Cr-4.5A1-1.75 Y2O3. The alloy was produced in extruded form from mechanically attrited powder. In the first part of this study a series of small scale (3in. dia.) extrusions were produced in order to evaluate various compositional and processing parameters. Based upon this study a single powder composition and three sets of extrusion parameters were chosen for use with full scale 7in. diameter extrusion billets. Dynamic (Mach 0.3), 2100 F oxidation tests showed the material to have excellent surface stability under these conditions, and hot corrosion testing at 1650 F showed it to be slightly superior to the analogous Ni base O.D.S. materials in this latter type of environment.

Book Feasibility of Making an Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Cobalt Base Alloy by Mechanical Attrition

Download or read book Feasibility of Making an Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Cobalt Base Alloy by Mechanical Attrition written by D. L. Klarstrom and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of making an oxide dispersion-strengthened, cobalt-base alloy by mechanical attrition was investigated. The optimum blend of starting powders to produce a Co-20Ni-18Cr-1Y2O3 base composition was determined. Using this blend, four different alloys were produced: two contained 1% and 2% Y2O3 and no aluminum, and two contained 1% and 4% aluminum with 1% Y2O3, respectively. A full scale property evaluation was performed for each alloy composition on extrusions produced at four different temperatures with a reduction ratio of 16:1. (Modified author abstract).
