Book Biodeterioration of Wooden Cultural Heritage

Download or read book Biodeterioration of Wooden Cultural Heritage written by Anastasia Pournou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since prehistoric times and throughout the course of human evolution, wood has been an integral part of all civilizations. Wooden Cultural Heritage can be found worldwide, providing valuable information on the social and economic context of human history. Nonetheless, as a natural cellulosic material, wood shows low resistance to biodeterioration and thus wooden Cultural Heritage often fails to escape decomposition in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This book provides a comprehensive overview on the biodeterioration of wooden Cultural Heritage and describes the decay mechanisms of key organisms and microorganisms encountered in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Cultural Heritage professionals, researchers and academics may explore within this book the associations between deteriogens, habitats and decay, which will assist them to understand wood biodeterioration and design effective prevention, mitigation and remediation strategies. The book presents case studies around the world to demonstrate the impact of biogenic deterioration on wooden Cultural Heritage and illustrates mechanisms and patterns in order to be a useful handbook of decay diagnosis. Lastly, by adopting a holistic approach to wood decay, basic concepts of wood technology, ecology, and deteriogens' biology are introduced, permitting readers of different scientific backgrounds to easily comprehend wood biodeterioration.

Book Kraft Pulp and Paper Mill Utilization Options for Grey stage Wood

Download or read book Kraft Pulp and Paper Mill Utilization Options for Grey stage Wood written by Theodore Radiotis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle epidemic. It examines lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) that has been attacked and killed by mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) and which goes through several stages (red and grey) following the attack. Wood moisture content decreases rapidly, typically to below fibre saturation point. As a consequence, the wood responds differently in both the chipping and pulping processes. Research on beetle-attacked wood has shown that many physical properties are not affected; wever wood-water interactions have not been studied in detail. In the two parts of this study, the sorption behaviour of beetle-killed wood in comparison to green wood is examined, and the influence of utilization of dry beetle-killed wood on kraft pulping operations and pulp quality is explored.--Includes text from Government of Canada publications site and from document.

Book Conservation of Historic Buildings

Download or read book Conservation of Historic Buildings written by Bernard Feilden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1982 Sir Bernard Feilden's Conservation of Historic Buildings has become the standard text for architects and others involved in the conservation of historic structures. Leading practitioners around the world have praised the book as being the most significant single volume on the subject to be published. This third edition revises and updates a classic book, including completely new sections on conservation of Modern Movement buildings and non-destructive investigation. The result of the lifetime's experience of one of the world's leading architectural conservators, the book comprehensively surveys the fundamental principles of conservation in their application to historic buildings, and provides the basic information needed by architects, engineers and surveyors for the solution of problems of architectural conservation in almost every climatic region of the world. This edition is organized into three complementary parts: in the first the structure of buildings is dealt with in detail; the second focuses attention on the causes of decay and the materials they affect; and the third considers the practical role of the architect involved in conservation and rehabilitation. As well as being essential reading for architects and others concerned with conservation, many lay people with various kinds of responsibility for historic buildings will find this clearly written, jargon-free work a fruitful source of guidance and information.
