Book Research of Agronomic and Quality Traits of Winter Barley Varieties Hordeum Vulgare L Under Growing Conditions in the Republic of Kosovo

Download or read book Research of Agronomic and Quality Traits of Winter Barley Varieties Hordeum Vulgare L Under Growing Conditions in the Republic of Kosovo written by Nexhdet Shala and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this paper is the research of agronomic and quality trains of winter varieties (hordeum vulgare L.) their adaptability and specific reactions towards growing conditions in the Republic of Kosovo. During three year trails on localities in Dukagjini area and area of Kosovo we researched 5 winter barley varieties. Environment has been explored together with estimation of significant parameters of grain yield, hectoliter weight, protein and starch content. Impact of year, location and variety on grain yield, hectoliter grain weight, protein and starch content has been estimated by analysis of variance. Environmental effects of planting barley cultivars in the Dukagjini area and area of Kosovo is based on a study that determines the influence of climatic factors, temperature and moisture, the quality of barley for beer production. Experiments were set according to the method of randomized blocks in three repetitions. Area of each experimental plot was 10 m2. In the laboratory at the Agricultural Institute of Kosovo, and close laboratory brewery in Peja were analyzed: the content of protein (%), weight (1000 seeds in grams), hectoliters weight (kg), humidity (%), yield (kg/ha), starch, color, aroma, impurity. Results obtained showed that parameters of achieved grain yield show that under favorable growing conditions one can expect better results of varieties Zllatko, Barun and Vanesa.

Book Identifying Phenotypic Traits Critical for Breeding Winter Malting Barley Adapted to Ohio and the Genomic Regions Affecting Those Traits

Download or read book Identifying Phenotypic Traits Critical for Breeding Winter Malting Barley Adapted to Ohio and the Genomic Regions Affecting Those Traits written by Benjamin Matthew Eggers and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A goal of The Ohio State University Hordeum vulgare L. breeding program is to develop winter-hardy, two-row varieties suitable for malting. Winter-hardiness and malting quality are complex traits, having multiple independent contributing components. It is critical that the program identify genotypes possessing the best agronomic and malting quality traits to guarantee Ohio barley farmers are profitable. To make better informed decisions regarding variety selection for cultivation under Ohio conditions and guide parental choice for crossing, I conducted a genome wide association study (GWAS). GWAS analyzes phenotypic data and genotypic data to test for associations between the markers and desirable traits. The GWAS was conducted using 350 barley genotypes that encompassed key germplasm contributing to the breeding program. The germplasm set was genotyped and phenotyped for agronomic and malting quality traits. Genotyping was performed using multiplexed sequencing using markers based off the barley 9k chip in collaboration with the USDA Western Regional Small Grains Genotyping Lab. Phenotypic data was collected during the 2019-2020 growing season at Wooster, North Central, and Western research branches. I identified at least one QTL associated with 27 of the 31 traits measured and identified 78 QTLs in total. Identified QTLs were all novel to Ohio malting barley and some match genomic regions previously recorded in other environments. The significant markers can be used in marker assisted selection in future breeding efforts. The phenotypic correlations found will allow for more accurate characterization of new genetic material.

Book Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci for Malting Quality in a Winter X Spring Barley Hordeum Vulgare L Cross

Download or read book Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci for Malting Quality in a Winter X Spring Barley Hordeum Vulgare L Cross written by Adeline M. Oziel and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making quality and winterhardiness in barley are "ultimate" phenotypes composed of component, quantitatively inherited traits. A 69-point genome map of the seven chromosomes of barley was used, in conjunction with multi-environment phenotypes for grain yield and malting quality, to determine the chromosome locations of quantitative trait loci (QTLs). A combined analysis of the two environments identified QTLs that were both common and unique to each environment. Dispersed QTLs with positive relationships provide ready targets for marker-assisted selection. Overlapping QTLs for agronomic and making quality QTLs with favorable alleles contributed by alternate parents will require further, higher resolution mapping to determine if negative relationships are due to linkage or pleiotropy. There is preliminary evidence for orthologous agronomic trait and malting QTLs in barley. This QTL analysis will hopefully assist in the rapid development of winter making varieties that will maximize the profitability of Oregon barley production.

Download or read book Bread making quality of wheat written by Bob Belderok and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheat is the world's most important agricultural commodity. In Europe, where wheat is the main staple, bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) covers the majority of land on which wheat is cropped. Wheat breeders and technologists have contributed greatly to the continued success of bread wheat and its products. The `bread-making quality' of a wheat variety can be described in relation to the processing its kernels must undergo to make a good bread. Bread wheat kernels must be suitable for proper milling into a flour that can produce a dough capable of becoming fine bread. The type of bread varies depending on local bread-making practices. Part I of this book contains a study of the anatomy and chemical composition of wheat kernels, and of the fundamental difference between `soft' and `hard' kernelled varieties. It relates these characteristics to the processes of milling, dough-making and manufacturing of bread, and to biscuit and pasta making. The genetic basis for these characteristics is illustrated, and assay methods for characterizing wheat varieties - ranging from Saunders' chewing test to the most recent developments in glutenin and gliadin research - are evaluated. Part II briefly describes - country by country - how bread-making quality has been integrated into wheat-breeding programmes throughout Europe, and how breeders have attempted to resolve the conflict between yield and quality. It describes how quality wheats `travelled' around the world - from their endogenic source in Eastern Europe to North America, and back again to Europe. This explains how specific genetic material can appear in the pedigrees of varieties grown in a wide range of agro-ecological zones. In addition to giving an interesting historical survey, the book points the way forward for breeders' efforts in the future. Bread-Making Quality updates and interprets knowledge in a way that makes it particularly accessible for food technologists, breeders, students, and teachers.

Book Ethnobotany and Biocultural Diversities in the Balkans

Download or read book Ethnobotany and Biocultural Diversities in the Balkans written by Andrea Pieroni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses recent and ongoing ethnobotanical studies in the Balkans. The book focuses on elaborating the relevance of such studies for future initiatives in this region, both in terms of sustainable and peaceful (trans-regional, trans-cultural) rural development. A multi-disciplinary viewpoint is utilized, with an incorporation of historical, ethnographic, linguistic, biological, nutritional and medical perspectives. The book is also authored by recognized scholars, who in the last decade have extensively researched the Balkan traditional knowledge systems as they pertain to perceptions of the natural world and especially plants. Ethnobotany and Biocultural Diversities in the Balkans is the first ethnobotany book on one of the most biologically and culturally diverse regions of the world and is a valuable resource for both scholars and students interested in the field of ethnobotany.
