Book Current Issues in Nursing

Download or read book Current Issues in Nursing written by Peta Allan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors' intention in the production of this book was to provide a realistic picture of the present state of nursing. This has been presented from a number of different but inter-linked perspectives. The decades since the inception of the National Health Service have been ones of significant change, both in society at large and in the field of health care. The period has witnessed political, economic, social, scientific and technological change taking place ever more rapidly; whilst, in terms of health care, demand and expectations continue to increase apace. Nursing, throughout the period, has been influenced by, and has responded to, these prevailing influences, and continues to do so. Contributors to this volume have sought to examine in depth some of the current issues in nursing at the present time. Each chapter examines a specific issue in the current nursing context and is, therefore, capable of standing alone. But considered together the chapters enable many aspects of the current debate on, and development of, nursing to be seen as a whole. It is hoped that this book will serve two fundamental purposes. First, to stimulate debate and activity by all nurses in their particular sphere of influence, and in the wider world of nursing. Second, it aims to inform those undertaking pre-or post-registra tion nursing programmes and thus assist their understanding of the state of nursing.

Book Nelson Goodman

Download or read book Nelson Goodman written by Daniel Cohnitz and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006-02-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although some of Nelson Goodman's views have become unfashionable or seem unorthodox, much in his work is of lasting significance. Daniel Cohnitz and Marcus Rossberg assess Goodman's contribution to philosophy, including his acceptance and critique of positivism, his defence of nominalism and phenomenalism, his formulation of a new riddle of induction, his work on notational systems, and his analysis of the arts. They offer an analysis of the unifying features of Goodman's philosophy - his constructivism, conventionalism, and relativism - and discuss his central work, The Structure of Appearance, and its significance in the analytic tradition. They also examine Goodman's views on mereology and semiotics, which underly his philosophy and provide the background to his aesthetics.

Book Contraceptive Risk

Download or read book Contraceptive Risk written by William Green and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Depo-Provera joins the national struggle over the drug's FDA approval to the state legal issues raised by its contraceptive and criminal justice uses. Depo-Provera is known as an injectable hormonal birth control method, but few are familiar with its dark and complicated history. Depo-Provera was tested on women since the mid-1960s without their informed consent until it was FDA-approved in 1992, but never FDA-approved as chemical castration for male sex offenders. Contraceptive Risk is William Green's landmark study of Depo-Provera. Based on a fascinating combination of archival materials and interviews, the book is framed as three interconnected stories told by Judith Weisz, who chaired the FDA's Public Board of Inquiry on Depo-Provera, a scientific court; by Anne MacMurdo who brought a products liability suit against Upjohn, the drug's manufacturer, for the deleterious side effects she suffered from the drug's use; and by Roger Gauntlett, an Upjohn heir who, when he was convicted of sexual assault, refused to take a dose of his family's own medicine as a probation condition. Together these three stories of Depo-Provera's convoluted fifty year odyssey call for a paradigm shift in pharmaceutical drug development. Contraceptive Risk is a thoroughly researched and engrossing approach to the scientific, political and institutional forces involved in health law and policy, as well as the multifaceted politics of measuring risk.

Book The Official History of Privatisation Vol I

Download or read book The Official History of Privatisation Vol I written by David Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of the Official History studies the background to privatisation, and the privatisations of the first two Conservative Governments led by Margaret Thatcher from May 1979 to June 1987. First commissioned by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair as an authoritative history, this volume addresses a number of key questions: To what extent was privatisation a clear policy commitment within the Thatcher Governments of the 1980s - or did Government simply stumble on the idea? Why were particular public corporations sold early in the 1980s and other sales delayed until well into the 1990s? What were the privatisation objectives and how did they change over time, if at all? How was each privatisation planned and executed, how were different City advisers appointed and remunerated, what precise roles did they play? How was each privatisation administered; in what ways did the methods evolve and change and why? How were sale prices determined? Which government departments took the lead role; what was the input of the Treasury and Bank of England; and what was the relationship between Ministers and civil servants? The study draws heavily from the official records of the British Government to which the author was given full access and from interviews with leading figures involved in each of the privatisations – including ex-Ministers, civil servants, business and City figures, as well as academics that have studied the subject. This new official history will be of much interest to students of British political history, economics and business studies.
