This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THROUGHOUT HUMAN HISTORY, CIVILIZATIONS have been built with the best materials available at the time. It started with a handful of natural substances - rocks, mud, wood, skins, and straw. Today, there is a vast range of materials available, from vulcanized rubber for our shoes to ceramic composites in military aircraft. Where do our modern materials come from? Some still come from the earth in the form of ores that are extracted, refined, and used to fabricate all kinds of products. The rest arise from the imagination of materials engineers. Materials engineers are on the cutting edge of technology in virtually every field. They develop materials with precise combinations of mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties that make other advances possible. Metals, plastics, ceramics, nanomaterials, and semi-conductors are just a few materials that these professionals continue to develop and enhance. Materials engineers are often the unsung heroes that make life better for countless millions of people. Here are some examples of what materials engineers have accomplished: Invented clothing that repels mosquitoes Created more flexible materials to enhance the maneuverability of skis and snowboards Developed nanosized polymers that help repair shattered bones Developed artificial skin grafts that help burn victims heal faster Created stretchable material for clothing that returns to its original shape In addition to developing new types of materials, materials engineers look for new ways to use existing materials. In the manufacturing environment, they are often tasked with selecting the most appropriate materials to produce particular items, whether that is computer chips or golf clubs. In the mining industry, they work on more efficient and eco-friendly ways of extracting minerals and processing them. Many materials engineers are also involved in research, studying the properties and structures of substances in order to create needed materials that do not yet exist, or to determine the cause of material failure. Materials engineers work in a variety of environments. Those focused on research and development work in university research laboratories or industry development labs. Those associated with manufacturing may work in factories or offices where they have access to advanced computers and design equipment. Some materials engineers spend much of their time out of doors at mining operations that may be quite remote. While the environment and hours that they work can vary substantially with their industry and job, most materials engineers work regular hours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers are faced with a bewildering array of choices when selecting a surface treatment for a specific corrosion or wear application. This book provides practical information to help them select the best possible treatment. An entire chapter is devoted to process comparisons, and dozens of useful tables and figures compare surface treatment thickness and hardness ranges; abrasion and corrosion resistance; processing time, temperature, and pressure; costs; distortion tendencies; and other critical process factors and coating characteristics. The chapter Practical Guidelines for Surface Engin.

Book Recent Researches in Metallurgical Engineering

Download or read book Recent Researches in Metallurgical Engineering written by Mohammad Nusheh and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgical Engineering is the science and technology of producing, processing and giving proper shape to metals and alloys and other Engineering Materials having desired properties through economically viable process. Metallurgical Engineering has played a crucial role in the development of human civilization beginning with bronze-age some 3000 years ago when tools and weapons were mostly produced from the metals and alloys. This science has matured over millennia and still plays crucial role by supplying materials having suitable properties. As the title, "Recent Researches in Metallurgical Engineering, From Extraction to Forming" implies, this text blends new theories with practices covering a broad field that deals with all sorts of metal-related areas including mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, heat treatment and casting.

Book Understanding the Educational and Career Pathways of Engineers

Download or read book Understanding the Educational and Career Pathways of Engineers written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-26 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering skills and knowledge are foundational to technological innovation and development that drive long-term economic growth and help solve societal challenges. Therefore, to ensure national competitiveness and quality of life it is important to understand and to continuously adapt and improve the educational and career pathways of engineers in the United States. To gather this understanding it is necessary to study the people with the engineering skills and knowledge as well as the evolving system of institutions, policies, markets, people, and other resources that together prepare, deploy, and replenish the nation's engineering workforce. This report explores the characteristics and career choices of engineering graduates, particularly those with a BS or MS degree, who constitute the vast majority of degreed engineers, as well as the characteristics of those with non-engineering degrees who are employed as engineers in the United States. It provides insight into their educational and career pathways and related decision making, the forces that influence their decisions, and the implications for major elements of engineering education-to-workforce pathways.
