Book Undergraduate Research in the Sciences

Download or read book Undergraduate Research in the Sciences written by Sandra Laursen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undergraduate research enhances the learning experience of students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Undergraduate Research in the Sciences offers a groundbreaking and practical research-based book on the topic. This comprehensive resource addresses how undergraduate research benefits undergraduate participants, including those populations that are underrepresented in the sciences; compares its benefits with other types of educational activities and experiences; and assesses its long-term value to students and faculty as both a scholarly and educational endeavor. In laying out the processes by which these benefits are achieved, this important book can assist faculty and program directors with practical guidance for design and evaluation of both new and existing undergraduate research programs. Praise for Undergraduate Research in the Sciences "This meticulous, definitive study of the effects of working with a faculty member on research as an undergraduate confirms the overall value of the experience by taking us deep into the minds and actions of participants—both faculty and students. As a result we now have many more compelling reasons to get more students involved with research mentors and ways to optimize the benefits for all parties."—George D. Kuh, Chancellor's Professor and director, Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research "This timely book offers a unique, comprehensive analysis of undergraduate research in the sciences, based on the voices of college students and faculty mentors who have participated in these voyages of discovery. As our nation struggles to train more scientists, this book will be a valuable resource for designing undergraduate research experiences that can build our country's capacity for discovery and innovation."—Arthur B. Ellis, Vice Chancellor for Research, University of California, San Diego "The text is written in a lucid and engaging style and will be a valuable guide to policymakers, academic administrators, and faculty members who want to find ways to engage undergraduates in the 'real work' of investigation."—Judith A. Ramaley, president, Winona State University "This book is a 'must-read' for anyone who directs undergraduates in research. It presents an impressive and rigorous body of work that brings fresh insights into the field of undergraduate research. The next generation of scientists will benefit greatly from the findings and recommendations!"—Jo Handelsman, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor, Yale University

Book Making the Transition to University Chemistry

Download or read book Making the Transition to University Chemistry written by Michael Clugston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making the transition to university chemistry is the perfect companion as students take the significant step from school to university, setting them up to be confident and successful in their chemistry studies. Each topic opens with expanded bullet points that remind the reader of familiar ideas from their pre-university studies that they will be expected to understand at the start of their undergraduate course.Taking the next step sections expand on these familiar ideas by way of more detailed explanations, which allow the reader to make links to work that will be important at university. Finally, A Deeper Look sections explore more challenging concepts (either because the mathematical level is higher or the explanation is more complicated). Some of the concepts presented in these sections are among the most exciting in the subject: they give a flavour of the new insights the studyof chemistry at university can offer. Its focus on those topics that may not have previously been studied by all students, and those topics that are regularly misunderstood by incoming undergraduates, provides guidance tailored to the particular needs of this student cohort, laying the foundation they need to succeed throughout theiruniversity studies.Digital formats and resourcesMaking the transition to university chemistry is available for students and institutions to purchase in a variety of formats. The e-book offers a mobile experience and convenient access along with functionality tools, navigation features, and links that offer extra learning support: www.oxfordtextbooks.co.uk/ebooks

Book Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education

Download or read book Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry graduate education is under considerable pressure. Pharmaceutical companies, long a major employer of synthetic organic chemists, are drastically paring back their research divisions to reduce costs. Chemical companies are opening new research and development facilities in Asia rather than in the United States to take advantage of growing markets and trained workforces there. Universities, especially public universities, are under significant fiscal constraints that threaten their ability to hire new faculty members. Future federal funding of chemical research may be limited as the federal budget tightens. All of these trends have major consequences for the education of chemistry graduate students in U.S. universities. To explore and respond to these intensifying pressures, the Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology held a workshop in Washington, DC, on January 23-24 2012, titled "Graduate Education in Chemistry in the Context of a Changing Environment." The workshop brought together representatives from across the chemical enterprise, representing leaders and future leaders of academia, industry, and government. The goal of the workshop was not to come to conclusions, but to have an open and frank discussion about critical issues affecting chemistry graduate education, such as the attraction and retainment of the most able students to graduate education, financial stressors on the current support model and their implications for the future model, competencies needed in the changing job market for Ph.D. chemists, and competencies needed to address societal problems such as energy and sustainability. Challenges in Chemistry Graduate Education: A Workshop Summary is organized into six chapters and summarizes the workshop on "Graduate Education in Chemistry in the Context of a Changing Environment."

Book Undergraduate Chemistry Education

Download or read book Undergraduate Chemistry Education written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undergraduate Chemistry Education is the summary of a workshop convened in May 2013 by the Chemical Science Roundtable of the National Research Council to explore the current state of undergraduate chemistry education. Research and innovation in undergraduate chemistry education has been done for many years, and one goal of this workshop was to assist in the transfer of lessons learned from the education research community to faculty members whose expertise lies in the field of chemistry rather than in education. Through formal presentations and panel discussions, participants from academia, industry, and funding organizations explored drivers of change in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education; innovations in chemistry education; and challenges and opportunities in chemistry education reform. Undergraduate Chemistry Education discusses large-scale innovations that are transferable, widely applicable, and/or proven successful, with specific consideration of drivers and metrics of change, barriers to implementation of changes, and examples of innovation in the classroom.
