Book Research Development and Evaluation Program to Demonstrate Performance and Reliability of Thermionic Diode Converters for Naval Nuclear Reactors

Download or read book Research Development and Evaluation Program to Demonstrate Performance and Reliability of Thermionic Diode Converters for Naval Nuclear Reactors written by RADIO CORP OF AMERICA LANCASTER PA. and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts were continued on a program to determine life and reliability of a thermionic energy converter designed for operation in a thermal reactor, and to refine the converter design to eliminate causes of failure. Design modifications to permit the inclusion of a fuel sleeve in the emitter of the A-1272 were made, and other modifications to improve converter performance were completed. High-stress and parametric tests were conducted. Detailed fabrication procedures were perfected. A system was established for recording all significant dimensions of converter components during fabrication; these data will be used to determine the extent of structural changes occuring throughout converter life. Twelve converters were tested for high-stress and performance limits, 4 were subjected to extensive life tests and one to preliminary life testing. The four converters, without nuclear fuel, have operated for a total of 1248 hours on life test without failure. The first fueled converter failed during initial tests as a result of a thermal short caused by the evaporation of fuel onto heater parts. (Author).

Book DOE JPL Advanced Thermionic Technology Program Progress Report

Download or read book DOE JPL Advanced Thermionic Technology Program Progress Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary long-term goal of the DOE effort is to improve TEC performance to the level that thermionic topping of fossil fuel steam powerplants becomes technically possible and economically attractive. An intermediate goal is to demonstrate an in-boiler thermionic module in the early 1980's. A short-term goal is the demonstration of the reliability of thermionic operation in a combustion environment. The focus of the JPL program is to develop thermionic conversion technology appropriate for nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) missions. These missions require operation at collector temperatures substantially higher than those associated with terrestrial applications. The DOE and JPL tasks for developing thermionic energy conversion (TEC) are complementary and synergistic. Converter performance improvement is an area in which one agency's program supports the effort of the other. Progress in the DOE program is reported including: (1) demonstration of over 3600 hours of stable operation (Quarter Scale Silicon Carbide Converter No. 1) in a combustion environment at emitter temperatures at, or above, 1600°K; (2) calculation of a complete current density-voltage characteristics in the power quadrant which includes both double valued sheath effects at the emitter and the spatial distribution of electron temperature in the interelectrode plasma; and (3) successful operation of Converter No. 222 with a cesium-graphite reservoir. JPL program accomplishments reported include: (1) performance data have been obtained on three planar variable spaced converters with molybdenum emitters (Converter Nos. 223, 227 and 228); and (2) system calculations indicate that long term thermionic performance demonstrated at Thermo Electron should yield a power system specific mass less than 22 kg/kWe.

Book The Development of a Thermionic Converter Module Suitable for Liquid Metal Heating

Download or read book The Development of a Thermionic Converter Module Suitable for Liquid Metal Heating written by G. Y. Eastman and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effort was continued to improve performance and increase the reliability of thermionic energy converters for space applications. The particular objectives include optimization of geometry and ceramic insulation between emitters and heat source. This work will include the development of a thermionic generator module to develop 3.0 volts of potential from a liquid metal heat source. The overall concept of the 3-volt generator has been established. Before final design and fabrication of the generator, the more difficult problems are being solved by fabricating and testing prototype 3-converter modules. During this period, four 3-converter modules were assembled. A number of subassemblies were successfully tested and techniques for assembling a series of converters within a single envelope were perfected. A method of bonding the center heat source tubing has been tentatively selected and materials for detailed evaluation of the method have been ordered. Life testing of one Type A1198B converter was concluded after 1010 hours. Another converter of this type has since completed 600 hours of a life test with a constant output of 46 watts. (Author).
