Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to produce a research design for Fort Anderson, a State Historic Site on the west bank of the Cape Fear River in Brunswick County, North Carolina. The thesis opens with the history of Fort Anderson, starting with a history of the Colonial town Brunswick, to provide a context for the site. A specific history of the fort begins with discussing the importance of Wilmington and the defenses of the Cape Fear River. Following this overview there is a summary of the construction of and capture of Fort Anderson. The research design uses the historical and archaeological background to formulate site-specific archaeological questions and uses cases studies of Civil War archeology to ensure that research at Fort Anderson is within the context of Civil War archeology. This research touches upon the following areas: previous archaeological research, the archeology of fort construction, a survey of the site, the fort's hospital, and the archeology of camp life. This research is designed to provide future archaeologists and the site manager of Fort Anderson with ways to better interpret the fortification and enhance the preservation of earthworks.

Book excerpt: Since the fall of 2010, a series of colonial period wharves and other features have been revealed as a result of erosion along the banks of the Cape Fear River at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site in Winnabow, North Carolina. These features have produced a considerable quantity of artifacts, but no formalized conservation plan has yet been developed for this area of the site. This proposed plan discusses the role of conservation at all stages of the archaeological processes, but focuses on the conservation needs of artifacts following excavation. Treatments for wood, ceramics, glass, leather, and textiles are discussed, as these are the major material types recovered along Brunswick's waterfront. The treatment of a knit cap and two leather shoes are discussed in detail as three case studies for the application of this conservation plan. The treatment options discussed will provide a possible course of action for the treatment of artifacts from this site, as well as similar sites elsewhere in the United States and abroad.

We felt that the need for coverage of study design in one source was strong, and although a few books and monographs existed on some of the topics that we covered, no single work attempted to synthesize the many facets of wildlife study design. We decided to develop this second edition because our original goal – synthesis of study design – remains strong, and because we each gathered a substantial body of new material with which we could update and expand each chapter. Several of us also used the first edition as the basis for workshops and graduate teaching, which provided us with many valuable suggestions from readers on how to improve the text. In particular, Morrison received a detailed review from the graduate s- dents in his “Wildlife Study Design” course at Texas A&M University. We also paid heed to the reviews of the first edition that appeared in the literature.

VDOT, through the Virginia Transportation Research Council, requested that roadside ditch erosion be investigated by means of a research project. Virginia Tech was selected to conduct this study. In support of this research, design guidance documents were surveyed to learn the current established policy and procedures for soil data collection and reporting, and the design practice for hydrologic and hydraulic analyses of roadside ditches. Site visits to each of Virginia's nine construction districts were made to interview district personnel about their personal experience with roadside ditch design, performance, and erosion failures. Current ditch design practices in nine other states were investigated through the collection and survey of state drainage manuals, and phone interviews with DOT personnel. Finally, an extensive review of current literature was performed with the intent of investigating current research on ditch erosion and erosion control. Results of the research indicate that three major factors are contributing to the occurrence of erosion in roadside ditches. They include, 1) insufficient soil information collected on road projects and reported in unusable formats for the hydraulic designers, 2) overuse of default values and criteria in hydraulic design, and 3) geographical and management issues not currently encompassed by current VDOT ditch design policies and procedures. Recommendations directed at these factors are provided, along with tables presenting updated correlations between site-specific conditions and hydraulic parameters for design.
