Book Research and Development of Subsurface Acoustic Wave Devices for Sensor Applications

Download or read book Research and Development of Subsurface Acoustic Wave Devices for Sensor Applications written by D. E. Cullen and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface skimming bulk waves (SSBW) in quartz were examined for sensor applications. Sensitivities to substrate strains, temperature, and fluid immersion were determined for AT and BT-cut quartz. The application of a strain sensitive SSBW device configuration as a fluid damped, cantilever beam accelerometer was investigated. This program has resulted in the discovery of an SSAW mode with properties that are extremely well suited to the development of acoustic wave sensors. Originator-supplied keywords include: Surface Skimming Bulk Waves (SSBW), SSBW sensors, and SSBW strain sensitivity.

Book Research and Development of Subsurface Acoustic Wave Device Configurations for Sensor Applications

Download or read book Research and Development of Subsurface Acoustic Wave Device Configurations for Sensor Applications written by Donald E. Cullen and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsurface acoustic wave modes that are sensitive to substrate strain but insensitive to temperature and surface fluid loading were sought for sensor applications. The properties of Stoneley-like interface waves in the layered structure SiO2/LiNbO3 were examined. A horizontal-shear surface wave in the same material configuration was found to be insensitive to surface fluids and was further studied for sensor applications. Zero first order temperature coefficients were found for these modes by varying the SiO2 film thickness. Surface skimming bulk waves in quartz were also examined and found to possess the most attractive properties for continued work in acoustic wave sensor development. (Author).

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have been widely used in different fields and will continue to be of great importance in the foreseeable future. These devices are compact, cost efficient, easy to fabricate, and have a high performance, among other advantages. SAW devices can work as filters, signal processing units, sensors and actuators. They can even work without batteries and operate under harsh environments. In this review, the operating principles of SAW sensors, including temperature sensors, pressure sensors, humidity sensors and biosensors, will be discussed. Several examples and related issues will be presented. Technological trends and future developments will also be discussed.

Book Surface Acoustic Wave Filters

Download or read book Surface Acoustic Wave Filters written by David Morgan and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Acoustic Wave Filters gives the fundamental principles and device design techniques for surface acoustic wave filters. It covers the devices in widespread use today: bandpass and pulse compression filters, correlators and non-linear convolvers and resonators. The newest technologies for low bandpass filters are fully covered such as unidirectional transducers, resonators in impedance element filters, resonators in double-mode surface acoustic wave filters and transverse-coupled resonators using waveguides. The book covers the theory of acoustic wave physics, the piezoelectric effect, electrostatics at a surface, effective permittivity, piezoelectric SAW excitation and reception, and the SAW element factor. These are the main requirements for developing quasi-static theory, which gives a basis for the non-reflective transducers in transversal bandpass filters and interdigital pulse compression filters. It is also needed for the reflective transducers used in the newer devices. A thorough revision of a classic on surface acoustic wave filters first published in 1985 and still in print Uniquely combines easy-to-understand principles with practical design techniques for all the devices in widespread use today Complete coverage of all the latest devices which are key to mobile phones, TVs and radar systems Includes a new foreword by Sir Eric Albert Ash

Book excerpt: Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are recognized for their versatility and efficiency in controlling and processing electrical signals. This has resulted in a multitude of device concepts for a wide range of signal processing functions, such as delay lines, filters, resonators, pulse compressors, convolvers, and many more. As SAW technology has found its way into mass market products such as TV receivers, pagers, keyless entry systems and cellular phones, the production volume has risen to millions of devices produced every day. At the other end of the scale, these are specialized high performance signal processing SAW devices for satellite communication and military applications, such as radar and electronic warfare. This volume, together with Volume 1, presents an overview of recent advances in SAW technology, systems and applications by some of the foremost researchers in this exciting field.

Book Designs and Applications of Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors for Biological and Chemical Sensing and Sample Handling

Download or read book Designs and Applications of Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors for Biological and Chemical Sensing and Sample Handling written by Stefan Cular and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Acoustic wave sensors have proven useful in many fields as primarily mass sensitive devices capable of responding to small environmental perturbations. The focus of this dissertation is the development of a new type of surface acoustic wave device with application to material property measurement, and biological and chemical sensing. This device is a combination of three independent acoustic wave devices with these waves propagated across the same area, while retaining independence of actuation and sensor function. The development of a complete sensor system, and its use and operation are presented for several example cases of chemical and biomarker sensing, and sample manipulation. These include experimental and theoretical studies for organic vapor sensing, biological moiety sensing, acoustic streaming to remove loosely bound material, and optimization of designs for these applications.

Book Research and Development of Surface Skimming Bulk Wave Devices for Sensor Applications

Download or read book Research and Development of Surface Skimming Bulk Wave Devices for Sensor Applications written by Donald E. Cullen and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of surface skimming bulk wave (SSBW) technology to sensors, and to an accelerometer in particular, was investigated through further studies of the properties of the SSBW mode, and through the design, fabrication, and evaluation of a laboratory SSBW cantilever beam accelerometer. The long-term stability of the SSBW mode for devices immersed in a damping fluid was shown to be equal to the stability of vacuum sealed devices (approx. 5 ppm/year). The relevant properties of the dual delay line configuration (SSBW devices on both sides of a single substrate) were investigated. The damping of mechanical vibrations in a cantilever quartz beam was studied, establishing the fact that critical damping of the beam can be achieved without difficulty. Evaluation of SSBW accelerometer models showed that the acceleration sensitivity of these devices can be accurately predicted from theory, and that fluid damping can reduce the vibration sensitivity of the SSBW oscillator to less than 5 x 10 to the minus 8th power/G. The results of this study indicate that a practical milli-G range SSBW accelerometer can be developed.
