Download or read book Rescued from the Mud written by Charles Stansbury and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about four high school teenagers who are called misfits, left-outs, and losers by their peers because of their defiant behavior toward teachers and administrators at their high school. The first teen, a native American, is a drug user whose father is a drug addict and petty thief. The second teen, who is Jewish, has been in and out of the detention center for a series of house burglaries. His father is unemployed, and his mother died from AIDS. The third teen, a Puerto Rican, drinks alcohol and hangs out all night in the streets, worrying his mother who is on the brink of a nervous breakdown. The fourth teen is an African American who bullies students after school. He would often shake them down for money or physically assault them for no reason. Both of his parents are doing time in prison, and he is living with his grandmother. These four teens were the most likely to fail in life. They were disrespectful and belligerent. Nevertheless, the stage was set to move them to another type of educational environment—one that would hold them accountable in strict fashion, or else, the next move could have them sent away to the state reformatory for boys. This new educational environment for them would be an alternative school that would force them to plot a journey toward changing their attitude and behavior to be productive human beings, despite coming from a life of despair, stemming from a broken home. They have acknowledged that they are waist-deep in mud and need to be rescued, so therefore, they make a pact among themselves to succeed in life, to build and make an indelible work. The questions are, How do they do it? What is their plan to be rescued from the mud? Time will tell.

Book excerpt: SOMETHING unusual happened in Britain during the spring of 2020. As the nation went into lockdown to fight a killer pandemic our view of what constituted a hero changed. Suddenly celebrity businessmen, actors, sports stars, singers, even royals seemed irrelevant. The people we were truly in awe of were the low-paid lifesavers, so much so that we stood outside our homes every Thursday to applaud them. As spring turned to summer and the Black Lives Matter movement gathered momentum, action was taken against those from past generations who had been feted, such as Bristol slave trader Edward Colston whose statue was hauled down. It felt as though the country was re-evaluating the notion of heroism. But how did we arrive at such a skewed version of it? 'Diamonds in the Mud' asks why the British have traditionally been taught to venerate kings and queens, generals and Eton-educated Prime Ministers, while, a few notable exceptions aside, those who changed history from below rarely got a look-in. It does so by telling the stories of a selection of working-class heroes the award-winning writer has met through life and journalism.

Book The Bad Ass Librarians of Timbuktu

Download or read book The Bad Ass Librarians of Timbuktu written by Joshua Hammer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice** To save ancient Arabic texts from Al Qaeda, a band of librarians pulls off a brazen heist worthy of Ocean’s Eleven in this “fast-paced narrative that is…part intellectual history, part geopolitical tract, and part out-and-out thriller” (The Washington Post) from the author of The Falcon Thief. In the 1980s, a young adventurer and collector for a government library, Abdel Kader Haidara, journeyed across the Sahara Desert and along the Niger River, tracking down and salvaging tens of thousands of ancient Islamic and secular manuscripts that were crumbling in the trunks of desert shepherds. His goal: preserve this crucial part of the world’s patrimony in a gorgeous library. But then Al Qaeda showed up at the door. “Part history, part scholarly adventure story, and part journalist survey…Joshua Hammer writes with verve and expertise” (The New York Times Book Review) about how Haidara, a mild-mannered archivist from the legendary city of Timbuktu, became one of the world’s greatest smugglers by saving the texts from sure destruction. With bravery and patience, Haidara organized a dangerous operation to sneak all 350,000 volumes out of the city to the safety of southern Mali. His heroic heist “has all the elements of a classic adventure novel” (The Seattle Times), and is a reminder that ordinary citizens often do the most to protect the beauty of their culture. His the story is one of a man who, through extreme circumstances, discovered his higher calling and was changed forever by it.
