Book excerpt: An “absorbing . . . magnificent” novel about an ordinary Irish Catholic man who ascends the church hierarchy to become Cardinal in the early twentieth century. (Boston Herald) A selection of the Literary Guild, The Cardinal was published in more than a dozen languages and sold over two million copies. Later made into an Academy Award-nominated film directed by Otto Preminger and starring John Huston, the book tells a story that captured the nation's attention: a working-class American's rise to become a cardinal of the Catholic Church. The daily trials and triumphs of Stephen Fermoyle, from the working-class suburbs of Boston, drive him to become first a parish priest, then secretary to a cardinal, later a bishop, and finally a wearer of the Red Hat. An essential work of American fiction that remains even more relevant today. “Extraordinary . . . controversial . . . first rate storytelling and characterization that has enormous appeal.” –Kirkus Reviews

Book Mysticism Physics Polarity and Mother Earth

Download or read book Mysticism Physics Polarity and Mother Earth written by Helmut W. Werner and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book, the author, a physicist with more than 30 years experience in an International Research Centre, describes and analyses his “travels” in another reality, i.e. experiences in a not-everyday plane of consciousness. They are called “holotropic” i.e. aiming towards the “Whole“ and are in part comparable with near-death experiences and spontaneously occurred again and again (without the use of drugs!). The struggle between the author’s “physics conscience” and the recollections of that other reality is the theme that recurs throughout the book. Topics that are discussed include: *Creation, the Big Bang and the Higgs field *The position of women in the Bible and in contemporary society * Trinity, a concept common to all religions *Is God male or female, or...? A new view of God *Religion, Spirituality and Science *Space, Time and Matter. Physics and Mysticism. What is real? *Polarity, the driving force for all events on earth *Archetypes: Fertility, the Great Mother, Gaia and the New Energy *The global crisis: Imbalance between nature and technology; Egoism versus Altruism. By reading this book with the heart, the overwhelming beauty of the “higher worlds” will open step by step and the reader will behold the infinite splendour of eternal BEING.

Book The Interweaving of Rituals

Download or read book The Interweaving of Rituals written by Nicolas Standaert and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death of the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci in China in 1610 was the occasion for demonstrations of European rituals appropriate for a Catholic priest and also of Chinese rituals appropriate to the country hosting the Jesuit community. Rather than burying Ricci immediately in a plain coffin near the church, according to their European practice, the Jesuits followed Chinese custom and kept Ricci's body for nearly a year in an air-tight Chinese-style coffin and asked the emperor for burial ground outside the city walls. Moreover, at Ricci's funeral itself, on their own initiative the Chinese performed their funerary rituals, thus starting a long and complex cultural dialogue in which they took the lead during the next century. The Interweaving of Rituals explores the role of ritual - specifically rites related to death and funerals - in cross-cultural exchange, demonstrating a gradual interweaving of Chinese and European ritual practices at all levels of interaction in seventeenth-century China. This includes the interplay of traditional and new rituals by a Christian community of commoners, the grafting of Christian funerals onto established Chinese practices, and the sponsorship of funeral processions for Jesuit officials by the emperor. Through careful observation of the details of funerary practice, Nicolas Standaert illustrates the mechanics of two-way cultural interaction. His thoughtful analysis of the ritual exchange between two very different cultural traditions is especially relevant in today's world of global ethnic and religious tension. His insights will be of interest to a broad range of scholars, from historians to anthropologists to theologians.

  • Author : John D. Caputo
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2013-09-13

Download or read book The Insistence of God written by John D. Caputo and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A tour de force . . . provocative ideas expressed in Heideggerian, Derridean, and Deleuzian rhetoric . . . for a new wave of Christian theologians” (Bibliographia). The Insistence of God presents the provocative idea that God does not exist—God insists. God’s existence is a human responsibility, which may or may not happen. For John D. Caputo, God’s existence is haunted by “perhaps,” which does not signify indecisiveness but an openness to risk, to the unforeseeable. Perhaps constitutes a theology of what is to come and what we cannot see coming. Responding to current critics of continental philosophy, Caputo explores the materiality of perhaps and the promise of the world. He shows how perhaps can become a new theology of the gaps God opens. “John D. Caputo is at the top of his game, and he is not content to reiterate what he has already expressed, but continues to develop his own ideas further by way of a thorough engagement with the fields of theology, Continental philosophy, and religious thought.” —Clayton Crockett, University of Central Arkansas “For those allergic to theological certainty―whether of God’s existence or of God’s death―Caputo delivers storm-fresh relief: the theopoetics of God’s insistence.” —Catherine Keller, Drew University “In my life I have read no more stimulating book of theology. Buckle your seatbelt!” —Dialog “An excellent text that opens the way into new forms of theological thinking. He puts forward an argument that must be wrestled with and brings to light new avenues for both religious and theological thought. Caputo is not for the faint of heart.” —Reviews in Religion and Theology
