Book Bridging Mental Boundaries in a Postcolonial Microcosm

Download or read book Bridging Mental Boundaries in a Postcolonial Microcosm written by William F. S. Miles and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu simultaneously experienced the two major types of colonialism of the modern era (British and French), the only instance in which these colonial powers jointly ruled the same people in the same territory over an extended period of time. This, in addition to its small size and recent independence (1980), makes Vanuatu an ideal case study of the clash of contemporary colonialism and its enduring legacies. At the same time, the uniqueness of Melanesian society highlights the singular role of indigenous culture in shaping both colonial and postcolonial political reality. With its close attention to global processes, Bridging Mental Boundaries in a Postcolonial Microcosm provides a fresh comparative approach to an island state that has most frequently been examined from an ethnographic or area studies perspective. William F. S. Miles looks at the long-term effects of the joint Franco-British administration in public policy, political disputes, and social cleavages in post-independence Vanuatu. He emphasizes the strong imprint left by "condocolonialism" in dividing ni-Vanuatu into "Anglophones" and "Francophones," but also suggest how this basic division is being replaced (or overlaid) by divisions based on urban or rural residence, "traditional" or "modern" employment, and disparities between the status and activities of men and women. As such, this volume is more than an analysis of a unique case of colonialism and its effects; it is an interpretation of the evolution of an insular society beset by particularly convoluted precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial fractures. Based principally on research conducted in 1991 and, following a key change in Vanuatu's government, a subsequent visit in 1992, the analysis is enriched by regular comparisons between Vanuatu and other colonized societies where the author has carried out original research, including Niger, Nigeria, Martinique, and Pondicherry. Extensive interviews with ni-Vanuatu are integrated throughout the text, presenting islanders' views of their own experience.

Book Laef Blong Mi

Download or read book Laef Blong Mi written by Sethy John Regenvanu and published by [email protected]. This book was released on 2004 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any country's history, there are special times that lay foundations or mark directions for the future. For Vanuatu, the period from 1970 to the end of the century was one such period, when the people of Vanuatu freed themselves from the colonial strangle-hold of the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides and established the independent Republic of Vanuatu. One of the men who took a leading role in that struggle was Sethy John Regenvanu, a man Malakula from the small island of Uripiv, who was born in the 1940s, grew up under Condominium rule, studied to be a pastor in the Presbyterian Church and worked in that role during the difficult 1970s as the country made the agonizing transition to independence. He represented the Hew Hebrides Christian Council (later Vanuatu Christian Council) in the Constitutional Conference, was elected to Parliament from Malakula in the key 1979 election and held several ministerial portfolios in various governments over the following 25 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Other Side is the first major ethnographic and historical study of the Sia Raga people of north Pentecost Island, a region that was home to the late Father Walter Lini, Vanuatu’s first prime minister. Exploring Raga social, spatial, and historical consciousness, this richly poetic account provides important theoretical contributions to ongoing debates in Pacific anthropology about the relation between structure and history, and place and time. It reveals important insights into the convergence of indigenous and exogenous cosmologies and hegemonies historically, and shows how these are implicated in contemporary social, ritual, and material cultural expressions. These analyses engage with broader concerns relating to colonial and postcolonial identities, political economy, and globalization in island Melanesia. The Other Side combines original and substantial ethnography with sophisticated theoretical reflection that will appeal broadly across the field of anthropology. It will also be of considerable value to scholars of Pacific and Melanesian history, politics, and society. The clear writing and entertaining narrative combine to create a work that is accessible to a wide audience. The volume’s critical and reflective analysis of anthropological research makes it a valuable teaching aid in courses that focus on ethnographic methods and writing. Students in Pacific anthropology will find it especially useful.37

Book A Bird that Flies with Two Wings

Download or read book A Bird that Flies with Two Wings written by Miranda Forsyth and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the problems and possibilities of plural legal orders through an in-depth study of the relationship between the state and customary justice systems in Vanuatu. It argues that there is a need to move away from the current state-centric approach to law reform in the South Pacific region, and instead include all state and non-state legal orders in development strategies and dialogue. The book also presents a typology of models of engagement between state and non-state legal systems, and describes a process for analysing which of these models would be most advantageous for any country in the South Pacific region, and beyond.

Book Women of the Place

Download or read book Women of the Place written by Margaret Jolly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women of the Place is a study of gender relations in the kastom communities of South Pentecost, Vanuatu. It considers kastom in these communities not as an eternal tradition, but rather as a way of life, an identity in relation, and in resistance to the forces of European development. The way in which Christian missions, the labour trade, and the development of Western political institutions had a divergent impact on women and men is explored. The relations between persons and things is highlighted in an examination of the myths and rituals of the life-cycle and of grade-taking. The significance of this ritual is located in the context of colonial history, particularly the impact of pacification on men. Finally, the book considers more generally kastom and gender in the post-colonial state.

Book Passage of Change

Download or read book Passage of Change written by Anita Jowitt and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous issues face Pacific states trying to find their way in the early 21st century. Countries are striving to secure the benefits of modernisation. Governance, law and order are needed to reach such a goal, but development cannot be at the price of culture or the environment. The question of how to develop and maintain sound legal systems and legal rules whilst maintaining the unique cultural heritages within the Pacific is a challenge with no easy answer. This interdisciplinary collection locates issues of law and governance within the particular socio-political context of the Pacific island region, presenting sociological, anthropological and political insights alongside jurisprudential analysis. Key issues including corruption, the role of customary law in modern legal systems, the place of human rights in the Pacific, environmental issues and the structure of the state are explored from a variety of perspectives.
