On the track of the world's commerce, open to the currents of intellectual and industrial life which sweep from Europe into the luxuriant country of the southern half of South America or around to the Pacific, her people have always been in the vanguard of Spanish-American civilisation. Her productive, well-watered, and gently rolling plains are well adapted for agriculture and unsurpassed for pasturage. Here the Indians struggled hardest to maintain themselves and longest resisted the Spanish conquest. From colonial times, Argentines have crowded in from the west, Brazilians from the north, and Buenos Aireans and Europeans from the coast, until this favoured spot has become the most thickly populated country of South America."

Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... THE EUEAL DISTKICTS. The most northerly point of the Republic IS Physical nine degrees from the tropics. The extent of the country in a northerly direction varies from under two to a little under five degrees. There is not, therefore, any striking variety of climate; and with the exception that the northern provinces, or departments, are more mountainous, and that in the neighbourhood of the river Uruguay and its affluents the country is more thickly wooded, there is not much alteration to be noticed in its general character of an undulating and grassy plain, with here and there monte, or low woods and brushwood, and always an abundance of water. The hilly districts in the north and east contain minerals of many kinds, including gold, lead, copper, agate, amethysts, and marble. But so far, the attempts that have been made to utilise the mineral wealth of the country have yielded poor results. Within the last two or three years, however, new companies have heen formed in Europe, to work the gold-mines of Cufiapiru in Tacuarembo. On this subject the report of the British Minister already alluded to contains the following remarks: -- "I have made a casual allusion to the goldmines at Ounapiru in another report, and before quoting, as I propose to do, the little that Dr. de Pena says upon this subject, I may as well state that the belief in- their eventual success is not general in Montevideo. "Mr. Lettsom, formerly Her Majesty's Charge-d'affaires in this country, and himself a very accomplished geologist, took a great deal of pains years ago to investigate the auriferous capacity of the region in question, with the result, I believe, of convincing himself, and some eminent English mining engineers who were interested in the matter, that the...
