Book Haifa Republic A Democratic Future for Israel

Download or read book Haifa Republic A Democratic Future for Israel written by Omri Boehm and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative argument for a new way of seeing Israel, Zionism, and the two-state solution. Haifa Republic: A Democratic Future for Israel is an urgent wake-up call. The philosopher Omri Boehm argues that it is long past time to recognize that there will not be a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people. After fifty years, Israel’s occupation of the West Bank constitutes annexation in all but name, even as the legitimate claims of the Arab population, soon to be a national majority, remain unaddressed. Meanwhile, daily life goes on under conditions rightly likened to apartheid. For liberals in Israel and America to continue to place their hopes in a two-state solution is a form of willful and culpable blindness, especially now that Israeli leaders across the political spectrum have begun to speak of ethnic cleansing. A catastrophe is in the making. But Haifa Republic also offers grounds for hope. Catastrophe can be averted, Boehm contends, by reconfiguring Israel as a single binational state in which Palestinians and Jews both possess human rights and equal citizenship. The original Zionists—Theodor Herzl, Ze’ev Jabotinsky, and, early in his career, David Ben-Gurion—all advocated such a federation, and as prime minister, Menachem Begin successfully submitted a kindred plan to the Knesset. A binational federation offers a last chance for the two peoples who call Palestine home to live in peace and mutual respect and to have a truly democratic future in common.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Republic of the Future: Or Socialism a Reality You may remember, perhaps, that before starting I found myself in very grave doubt as to which route to take - whether to come by balloon or by tunnel. As the latter route would enable me to enjoy an entirely novel spectacle, that of viewing sub-marine scenery, I chose, and wisely I now know, to come by the Pneu matic Tube Electric Company. The comforts and luxuries of this sub-marine route are beyond belief. The perfection of the contrivances for supplying hot and cold. In addition, the authors make recommendations for core functions in public health assessment, policy development, and service assurances, and identify the level of government--federal, state, and local--at which these functions would best be handled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Archetypes of the cowboy story, tropes drawn from sci-fi, love letters, diaries, confessions all abound in this relentlessly engaging tale. Dodson has quite brilliantly exposed the gears and cogs whirring in the novelist’s imagination. It is a mad and beautiful thing.” --Keith Donohue, The Washington Post Winner of Best of Region for the Southwest in PRINT’s 2016 Regional Design Awards Bats of the Republic is an illuminated novel of adventure, featuring hand-drawn maps and natural history illustrations, subversive pamphlets and science-fictional diagrams, and even a nineteenth-century novel-within-a-novel—an intrigue wrapped in innovative design. In 1843, fragile naturalist Zadock Thomas must leave his beloved in Chicago to deliver a secret letter to an infamous general on the front lines of the war over Texas. The fate of the volatile republic, along with Zadock’s future, depends on his mission. When a cloud of bats leads him off the trail, he happens upon something impossible... Three hundred years later, the world has collapsed and the remnants of humanity cling to a strange society of paranoia. Zeke Thomas has inherited a sealed envelope from his grandfather, an esteemed senator. When that letter goes missing, Zeke engages a fomenting rebellion that could free him—if it doesn’t destroy his relationship, his family legacy, and the entire republic first. As their stories overlap and history itself begins to unravel, a war in time erupts between a lost civilization, a forgotten future, and the chaos of the wild. Bats of the Republic is a masterful novel of adventure and science fiction, of elliptical history and dystopian struggle, and, at its riveting core, of love.

Book Democracies and Republics Between Past and Future

Download or read book Democracies and Republics Between Past and Future written by Carlo Pelloso and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracies and Republics Between Past and Future focuses on the concepts of direct rule by the people in early and classical Athens and the tribunician negative power in early republican Rome – and through this lens explores current political issues in our society. This volume guides readers through the current constitutional systems in the Western world in an attempt to decipher the reasons and extent of the decline of the nexus between ‘elections’ and ‘democracy’; it then turns its gaze to the past in search of some answers for the future, examining early and classical Athens and, finally, early republican Rome. In discussing Athens, it explores how an authentic ‘power of the people’ is more than voting and something rather different from representation, while the examples of Rome demonstrate – thanks to the paradigm of the so-called tribunician power – the importance of institutionalised mechanisms of dialogic conflict between competing powers. This book will be of primary interest to scholars of legal history, both recent and ancient, and to classicists, but also to the more general reader with an interest in politics and history.

Book excerpt: My dear Hannevig, can you believe me when I tell you that I havebeen in this hotel four mortal days, have eaten three substantialmeals a day, have been fairly comfortable, and yet have not seen ahuman creature, from a landlord to a servant? The whole establishmentapparently is run by machinery. There is a complicated bell apparatuswhich you ring for every conceivable want or need. Meals are served inone's own room, by a system of ingenious sliding shelves, which openand shut, and disappear into the wall in the most wizard-like manner.Of course the reason of all these contrivances is obvious enough. In asociety where labor of a degrading order is forbidden by law, machinerymust be used as its substitute. It is all well enough, I presume, fromthe laborer's point of view. But for a traveller, bent on a pleasuretrip, machinery as a substitute for a garrulous landlord, and a scoreof servants, however bad, is found to be a poor and somewhat monotonouscompanion. I amuse myself, however, with perpetually testing all thebells and the electrical apparatus, calling for a hundred things Idon't want, to see whether they will come through the ceiling or up thefloor.
