Book Reproductive Biology of Elliptoideus Sloatianus Lampsilis Subangulata and Pleurobema Pyriforme Bivalvia Unionidae

Download or read book Reproductive Biology of Elliptoideus Sloatianus Lampsilis Subangulata and Pleurobema Pyriforme Bivalvia Unionidae written by Christine A. O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study on the reproductive biology of Elliptoideus sloatianus, Lampsili subangulata, Medionidus penicillatus, and Pleurobama pyriforme was conducted from May 1995 to January 1997. the mussels used int he study wre collected in Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint, and ochlockonee river drainages in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Periods of gravidity were determined by inspecting female mussels monthly; host fish were determined by laboratory infections. A text was conducted to determine if host fish developed an immunity to glochidia after multiple infestations occurred. An experiment was also conducted to determine if unionid glochidia will transform on a non indigenous fish. Finally, the glochidia from each mussel species were photographed using a scanning electron microscope. Primary host fish were not identified for Elliptoideus sloatianus. Elliptoideus sloatianus is a tachytictic breeders. Lampsilis subangulata is a bradytictic breeder. Primary host fish were identified as Micropterus punctulatus and M. salmoides. Medionidus penicillatus is a bradytictic breeder. primary host fish were identified as Etheostoma edwini and Percina nigrofasciata. Pleurobama pyriforme is a tachytictic breeder. the primary host fish was identified as Pteronotropis hypselopterus. After infesting M. salmoides twice with L. subangulata glochidia, a t-test indicated that there was a significant reduction in the number of juveniles produced by M. salmoides after the second infection. Poecilia reticulata, a non indigenous fish, successfully transformed glochidia from all four mussel species. However, the number of Poecilia retuculata producing juvenile mussels varied each species of mussel.

Book Sturgeon biodiversity and conservation

Download or read book Sturgeon biodiversity and conservation written by Vadim J. Birstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-05-31 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a synthesis of basic biological and conservation data for more than 30 species of sturgeons (Acipenseridae), paddlefishes (Polyodontidae) and their fossil allies in the order Acipenseriformes. Since the Jurassic, the four families of sturgeon-like fish have been restricted to the Holarctic, where until very recently they flourished in most major river systems. Today, however, virtually all species of sturgeons and paddlefishes face difficult conservation issues. Papers in the first section of this volume examine paleontology, systematics, evolution and basic biology of Acipenseriformes. The second section of this volume details current conservation status for most of the world's living species of Acipenseriformes. These papers mark the first attempt to make such a global review of recent data from across the northern hemisphere. The emerging picture is discouraging, for negative anthropogenic impacts range from overfishing to water pollution, to dams and water diversion projects, and all species are threatened to some degree. The third section of the volume considers specific human impacts and responses to conservation issues. These include: the Aral Sea ecological disaster and its impact on native sturgeons; a review of methods for restoring sturgeon populations; the use of molecular techniques in developing conservation strategies; the extreme sensitivity of sturgeons and paddlefishes to overfishing; and the history of a recently convicted caviar poaching ring. The volume's summary reviews the status of all extant species and notes future directions for research on behavior, ecology and population biology that could lead to better co-ordinated international conservation efforts.

Book Fish Migration and Fish Bypasses

Download or read book Fish Migration and Fish Bypasses written by Mathias Jungwirth and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1998-09-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Conference on Fish Migration and Bypass Channels held in Vienna in September 1996. It covers the range of fish pass technologies currently in use throughout the world and attempts to develop a wider, more ecological perspective on this formerly engineering-orientated discipline. Emphasis is placed on enhancing an understanding of fish migration behaviour, and achieving optimum design to meet the behavioural requirements of all known migratory species. Additional attention is paid to comparing the European trend towards constructing nature-like bypass channels with the highly technical solutions dominant in North America.

Book The Freshwater Mussels of Tennessee

Download or read book The Freshwater Mussels of Tennessee written by Paul Woodburn Parmalee and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Freshwater Mussels of Tennessee . . . is indispensable to anyone, anywhere, working on this group. Parmalee and Bogan have written a work that sets the standard for future regional guides."--G. Thomas Watters, Ohio Biological Survey "The Freshwater Mussels of Tennessee documents a tremendously diverse and unique mussel fauna that is rapidly being destroyed by modern development. Parmalee and Bogan set a new standard for state mussel surveys in their authoritative, thorough, and and highly readable account. The book will be of interest to biologists and conservationists worldwide and will appeal to anyone who cares about the preservation of natural resources in the southeastern United States."--Robert E. Warren, Illinois State Museum With more than 150 species and subspecies recorded in the state, Tennessee has one of the most diverse freshwater mussel faunas in North America. Valuable as indicators of water quality, these mollusks have themselves become threatened as development encroaches on habitat--twenty-three are currently listed as endangered species and at least twelve have become extinct. This is the first book for Tennessee to deal with this biologically and commercially significant group of mollusks. Its authors have been studying and writing about the mussels of Tennessee for more than twenty years and have undertaken a systematic organization of a large and complex body of information to bring order to a difficult field. The book traces the long history of human exploitation of mussels, from aboriginal food gathering to the growth of the cultured pearl industry. It provides an interpretive context for its exhaustive species accounts with background material on biology, distribution, economic utilization, taxonomy, and conservation issues. The authors also review the life cycle of the mussel and describe its many remarkable traits, such as its shell formation and the strategies it employs during the larval stage in parasitizing fish. The species accounts comprise 128 members of Family Unionidae--from pigtoes and pocketbooks to lilliputs and spikes--plus four additional species. The authors cover classification and synonymy, range and distribution, life history and ecology, and survival status. Particular attention is paid to shell description and structure to assist the reader in identification. Each species account includes a distribution map and color photos of two specimens. The Freshwater Mussels of Tennessee is a major reference that encompasses historical and modern mussel collections and draws on conservation studies that span two centuries. It will stand as an authoritative guide to understanding Tennessee mollusks and as a benchmark in the study of these species worldwide. The Authors: Paul W. Parmalee is professor emeritus of zooarchaeology and director emeritus of the McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Arthur E. Bogan is curator of aquatic invertebrates at the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh.

Book The Freshwater Mussels of Ohio

Download or read book The Freshwater Mussels of Ohio written by G. Thomas Watters and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, a naturalist named Rafinesque stood on the banks of the Ohio River and began to describe the freshwater mussels he found there. Since that time, these animals have earned a place among the most imperiled animals in North America. Dozens of species have become extinct, and it is estimated that two-thirds of the remaining freshwater mussels face a similar fate. Yet, despite their importance, the mussels of Ohio remain a poorly documented and largely mysterious fauna. This book compiles existing research on Ohio's mussels, synthesizing works on genetics, biology, and systematics into one volume. Full-page color images depict shell variation, hinge detail, and beak sculpture. Full-page maps show the distribution of each species based upon the collections of numerous museums, with historical distributions dating from the 1800s. In addition to species accounts, the book has an introductory section that includes information on basic biology, human use, and conservation issues.--adapted from jacket.

Book John Lydgate s Lives of Ss Edmund Fremund and the Extra Miracles of St Edmund

Download or read book John Lydgate s Lives of Ss Edmund Fremund and the Extra Miracles of St Edmund written by John Lydgate and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2009 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lydgate wrote the 'Lives of Ss Edmund & Fremund' at the request of his abbot, William Curteys, to commemorate the stay of the young King Henry VI at the Benedictine abbey of Bury St Edmunds from Christmas Eve 1433 to shortly after Easter 1434 when Henry was received into confraternity. The work survives in thirteen manuscripts or fragments, and BL MS Harley 2278, on which the present edition of the 'Lives of Ss Edmund & Fremund' is based, was the copy of the poem presented to Henry VI, probably before 1444. The 'Lives' consists of a prologue, the Life of St Edmund as books one and two, the Life of St Fremund as book three, a conc1uding prayer to St Edmund, an envoy, and an address to Henry VI. The volume also presents the three texts that make up the 'Extra Miracles of St Edmund' which are found in four of the later manuscripts of the 'Lives' and independently in one manuscript. This edition of the 'Lives of Ss Edmund & Fremund' is the first to establish the text on the basis of the readings of all the manuscripts, and is also the first to include the 'Extra Miracles'. The edited texts are followed by a commentary, textual notes, a glossary of proper names, and a selective glossary.
