Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Canis species possess a unique suite of reproductive traits including social monogamy, copulatory lock/tie, and biparental care. Females are seasonally monestrous and experience an obligatory pseudopregnancy after spontaneous ovulation. While these characteristics have been ascribed to coyotes, an integrated profile of coyote behavior and physiology has not yet been described. In this study, temporal correlations between steroid hormone levels and socio-sexual mating behaviors were documented, as were changes in vaginal epithelium. Pseudopregnancy was compared to pregnancy by contrasting hormone (progesterone, estradiol, prolactin and relaxin) profiles of unmated females to patterns obtained in alternate years when they bred. Meanwhile, social interactions between pseudopregnant females and their mates appeared similar to pregnant coyotes, suggesting a proximate role of pseudopregnancy in pair-bond enforcement. Finally, out-of-season stimulation of ovarian hormones and estrous behaviors suggested that reproductive seasonality of the coyote may possess some degree of plasticity, providing an adaptive response mechanism to environmental change.

Book excerpt: Coyotes (Canis latrans) have been and continue to be significant predators of livestock, mainly domestic sheep. Managing coyote predation remains a challenge. A variety of non-lethal population control methods including reproductive inhibitors are currently being tested. The primary constraint of an efficient, inexpensive biological control method is developing a species-specific method of delivery. The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of the Coyote Lure Operative Device (CLOD) for delivery of oral reproductive inhibitors in Southeastern Wyoming in conjunction with enhanced sensory cues and winter weather variables. One hundred and ninety CLODs were activated during the study period, November 1, 2007 - April 3, 2008. DNA analysis confirmed activations by 66 coyotes (Canis latrans), 90 red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and 7 unknown canid species. Preference for activations of CLODs by coyotes with Karo® syrup when used in conjunction with a lure (Fatty Acid Scent) was significant (F 3, 1052 =6.18, p=0.000). No correlations were found to exist between number of activations and weather patterns. This field research shows that oral reproductive inhibitors can be delivered to free ranging coyotes during the winter, via the CLOD. The data shows that the CLOD is not a species-specific delivery device; rather, it is a canid specific delivery device.

The initial material was not collected occasionally from wolf hunters and wolf pup searchers, but mainly gained by authors first-hand according to a well-set research design and long-term. By analyzing the gathered data, we became convinced that in the wolf reproduction biology there are more exceptions than rules. Therefore, the standard patterns of reproduction biology in wolves that are wide-spread in the published literature about the species we call as common beliefs that are given versus the wolf reality that we have found in Belarus. Concerning the non-standard features in the wolf reproduction biology, we revealed that multiple breeding in wolf pack is a common phenomenon, breeding of yearling females and wolf-dog hybridization were found to be irrespective the food base and strongly depending on the species population density i.e. they are reproduction regulations. Wolf pup mortality was investigated and the crucial role of deliberate predation of lynxes on wolf pups was revealed.
