Book Feeding Ecology of and Lead Exposure in a Top Predator

Download or read book Feeding Ecology of and Lead Exposure in a Top Predator written by Mirjam Nadjafzadeh and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2011 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the feeding ecology of raptors has attracted the attention of many scientists, aspects such as diet selection and foraging strategy are still poorly understood. This is particularly true for large species such as the white-tailed eagle. Representative assessments of the contribution of food sources containing toxins such as lead to raptor diets are scarce but are essential for optimising conservation efforts. This dissertation investigated the feeding ecology of white-tailed eagles to shed light on the interaction of such top predators with their environment and to improve the conservation management of this lead-exposed species. A use of complementary methods identified the most effective approach for dietary investigations on free-ranging raptors. The findings revealed that the foraging strategy of white-tailed eagles is influenced by both individual and environmental factors and corresponds to an efficient food intake in terms of optimal foraging theory. The main sources of lead fragments that induce fatal lead poisoning are shot mammalian carcasses which constitute important alternative diet components for white-tailed eagles during the hunting season. One approach to solve the lead poisoning problem can be the use of lead-free bullets by hunters that fragment into sufficiently large particles which would be avoided by scavenging eagles and birds with similar feeding behaviour.

Book Environmental Governance of the Baltic Sea

Download or read book Environmental Governance of the Baltic Sea written by Michael Gilek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents a comprehensive and coherent interdisciplinary analysis of challenges and possibilities for sustainable governance of the Baltic Sea ecosystem by combining knowledge and approaches from natural and social sciences. Focusing on the Ecosystem Approach to Management (EAM) and associated multi-level, multi-sector and multi-actor challenges, the book provides up-to-date descriptions and analyses of environmental governance structures and processes at the macro-regional Baltic Sea level. Organised in two parts, Part 1 presents in-depth case studies of environmental governance practices and challenges linked to five key environmental problems - eutrophication, chemical pollution, overfishing, oil discharges and invasive species. Part 2 analyses and compares governance challenges and opportunities across the five case studies, focusing on governance structures and EAM implementation, knowledge integration and science support, as well as stakeholder communication and participation. Based on these cross-case comparisons, this book also draws a set of general conclusions on possible ways of improving the governance of the Baltic Sea by promoting what are identified as vital functions of environmental governance: coordination, integration, interdisciplinarity, precaution, deliberation, communication and adaptability.

Book Environmental Contaminants in Wildlife

Download or read book Environmental Contaminants in Wildlife written by James P. Meador and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-03-20 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written about the effects of toxic chemicals on wildlife, but none has focused on the practical question, "How much of a chemical in the tissues of an animal is harmful?" This book deals exclusively with that question. This comprehensive reference will certainly become the standard resource on the topic, offering authoritative and sound advice on many environmental contaminants. With chapters written by outstanding experts in their respective fields, this is not only a scholarly collection of discussions on different chemicals, but, for those who have the day-to-day task of evaluating the harm of environment contaminants to wildlife, this book will provide answers on, for example, how to interpret 1 ppm lead in the liver of a duck or fish. The authors explain the snags of interpreting data that are sometimes conflicting or insufficient, providing the reader with helpful advice on how to cope with such data. Each chapter reviews literature on a specific chemical, followed by a easy-to-understand summary providing technical guidance. For many years this book will remain the preeminent reference on how to interpret contaminant levels of organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, dioxins, PAHs, metals, selenium, and fluorides in wildlife.

Book Environmental Contaminants and Endocrine Health

Download or read book Environmental Contaminants and Endocrine Health written by Oliana Carnevali and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Contaminants and Endocrine Health focuses specifically on contaminants with hormonal disrupting activities. The book provides insights into the multiple effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and their mechanism of action (MoA) on metabolism, reproduction and the multiple physiological roles of the endocannabinoid system which has recently been indicated as new target. The content systematically covers EDC sources and effects, EDCs as sources of disease and health impairment in laboratory models, EDCs as the cause of disease and health impairment in humans and wild species, and the removal of hazardous pollutants from wastewaters to highlight intervention, mitigation and adaptation for reduced threat. This content will be a foundational resource for academic and research staff in endocrinology and hormone toxicology as well as for professors, researchers and students in these areas. Includes important foundational coverage of the endocrine system, definitions of EDC sources and descriptions, model examples and mechanisms of action biological effects Provides coverage of EDC effects in humans and animals, from metabolic alterations to epidemiological studies of fertility and metabolism Presents insights into the confirmed and suspected human diseases spectrum with origins linked to EDC exposure, including cancers, intellectual disabilities, autism, birth defects of the urethra (hypospadias), decreased sperm count, increased rates of miscarriage, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and more
