Book An Economic History of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Economic History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Ernest Ludlow Bogart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic History of the United States The purpose of this book is not to rehearse the events common to political and constitutional histories of the United States, but rather to emphasize the points neglected by them. The keynote of all American history, from whatever standpoint it may be written, is found in the efforts of a virile and ener getic people to appropriate and develop the wonderful natural resources of a new continent and there to realize their ideals of liberty and government. The economic history of the United States is largely the story of the achievements of a people working under free competition, untrammeled by custom, tradition, or political limitations, and whose changing conditions of environment constantly compelled new adapta tions and promoted ingenuity and energy of character. The history of this economic struggle is not one whit less interesting or dramatic than the political history of the same period, while it is absolutely essential to a thorough understanding of the latter. Book Selections Illustrating Economic History Since the Seven Years War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections Illustrating Economic History Since the Seven Years War Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Rand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections Illustrating Economic History Since the Seven Years War The history of the Roman colonies IS by no means so bril liant. Some of them, indeed, such as Florence, have in the course of many ages, and after the fall of the mother city, grown up to be considerable States. But the progress of no one of them seems ever to have been very rapid. They were all established in conquered provinces, which in most cases had been fully inhabited before. The quantity of land as signed to each colonist was seldom very considerable, and, as the colony was not independent, they were not always at liberty to manage their own affairs in the way that they judged was most suitable to their own interest. Book A History of Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Political Economy Classic Reprint written by John K. Ingram and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Political Economy It is with great pleasure that I embrace the opportunity afforded me by the publishers of Dr. Ingram's "History of Political Economy" to commend the book to the attention of the American public. Dr. Ingram needs no introduction to our students of economics. His work in the Encyclopaedia Britannica has attracted marked attention wherever earnest thinkers are studying the social and economic problems of our time, whether in Europe or America. The present treatise deserves especial notice, as the first serious attempt by a properly qualified English writer to present a view of the progress of economic thought The works of M'Culloch and Twiss on the same subject were of value only because there was nothing else on the same topic. They testify eloquently to the exceedingly primitive state of the history of economic thought and policy which existed in their day. The work of Blanqui, recently translated into English, is rather a history of economic systems (and a poor one even as such) than of economic theories and doctrines. Up to the time of the appearance of the nineteenth volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica there was no essay on the subject in English which could be considered a very valuable one. We now have a treatise which will compare favourably with any work of similar compass in any other language. Book Institutional and Economic History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Institutional and Economic History Classic Reprint written by Johns Hopkins University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutional and Economic History During the early decades of the present century, Cincinnati was the most important commercial center of the West. In 1820, Chicago had not yet come into existence, St. Louis was a mere trader's settlement, and Louisville a modest town of some four thousand inhabitants. The traffic Of the entire region drained by the Mississippi river and its tributaries was transported by water, and Cincinnati was practically the only market in which the surplus products of the South and West could be exchanged for eastern and northern manufactures. The application of steam to river navigation in the decade between 1820 and 1830 greatly strengthened and developed these natural advantages. Louisville and St. Louis rose about the same time to commercial importance, but their competition only served to stimulate the growth of the older city. Population increased from in 1820 to 16i, o44 in 1860, and remained throughout this entire period the largest of any city west of the seaboard.1 Commercial relations ex tended from Pittsburgh to Fort Benton, Montana, and from St. Paul to New Orleans. Particularly with the South, as a result of advantageous location and intimate acquaintance with the tastes and habits of southern merchants, a large and profitable business was enjoyed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Interpretation of History The lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the hall of the author's College (worcester, Oxford) in his capacity as lecturer in Political Economy to that Society. They were open to all members of the university, and were very numerously attended. I mention this, because, being printed as they were read, the fact may explain or excuse the various local allusions which they con tain, and the occasional repetitions of statement which will be found in them. The business of a lecturer is to teach as best he can. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of Political Economy in Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Political Economy in Europe Classic Reprint written by Jerome-Adolphe Blanqui and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Political Economy in Europe To attempt a narration of these experiences in Europe from the earliest period - their successes and their fail ures - was the task that M. Blanqui proposed to himself in writing the history under consideration. The result of his labors has been of necessity imperfect, because the material for constructing a complete record does not exist; and because the restriction of the discussion of such material as is available, which the author at the outset seems to have prescribed to himself, namely, two small 12mo volumes (in the French edition), did not admit of the entering at any great length into details, or the accomplishment of much other than the presenta tion of the more important economic transactions in the history of Europe, and the extent of their influences in promoting or retarding the world's material progress and development. Nevertheless the book as it exists to day, with its record terminating in 1842, is in the highest degree instructive, and in a popular sense, exceedingly attractive. It is moreover, one of the comparatively few books published during the last half century which has attained a world-wide reputation, and its translation and present re-publication fills a place, which so far as the observation of the writer extends, is not supplied by any other work in the English language. Book The History of Economics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Economics Classic Reprint written by Henry Dunning Macleod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Economics Highly as we may esteem the great Economists of this and other countries, it is essential to remember the character Of the great Economical contests up to the present time. They have been almost entirely destructive. The first Economists found the public mind and the administration infected with an immense mass of rooted prejudices, errors, and abuses. Their first efforts were, therefore, naturally directed to sweep these away; to beat down and abolish false doctrines of all sorts; to extirpate bad and mischievous laws interfering with the natural order of things; to abolish legislative interference with wages, with prices, with the interest of money, and with the commercial intercourse of nations; to establish, in fact, freedom of contract and exchange. And in this Economists Of'all nations are agreed. The repeal of the Corn and Navigation Laws in England may be regarded as the consummation of the destructive era of Economical Science in' this country. We have now arrived at a new and distinct phase of the Science; that, in fact, at which the period Of destruction has ended, and that of construction has come. Book Modern Economic Tendencies

Download or read book Modern Economic Tendencies written by Sidney Armor Reeve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Economic Tendencies: An Economic History of America IN a work portraying economic evolution from a time genera tions in the past down to the latest practicable moment, in order to form a basis as accurate as possible for predicting the future, it is important to know the date of actual writing. The procession of events during the last six years has altered so drastically, and has transformed so many times, the complexion of public opinion, that words must be interpreted in the light of the date of their utterance. This book was begun in the winter of 1912-13, as soon as the data from the census of 1910 had become available, and some portions remain unchanged since then. On the other hand, some statistical features have been brought down to the fall of 1917, with views in the text to correspond. During 1918 and 1919 the diction of the entire book was revised, and in the latter year the order of chapters was shifted. Occasional foot-notes or paragraphs were added which carry with them evidence of their later date. But, since it was manifestly impossible to bring the entire book into consistency with the viewpoint of these later years, unless it were to be entirely rewritten, care was taken to preserve all of the sentiments of the book in substance as they had been written in 1917 or before. The subdivision of the book into four Parts, namely, Back ground, Economic Principles, Data and Social Reactions, was an afterthought. Each of these four parts comprise references to all four of these topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
