Book Freedom from Stress

Download or read book Freedom from Stress written by Edward E. Ford and published by Meyer Stone & Company. This book was released on 1989 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people deal with symptoms...this book, based on cybernetic control theory, deals with causes. Stress is an inescapable fact of modern life. Probably most of us would say we have more stress than is healthy for us, yet in most situations we see it as an inevitable by-product of our personal situation, emotions, job, society, or background. We think we are victims of inevitable stress. In simple, accessible language, Freedom from Stress explains new scientific thinking that utterly transforms stress. Stress results from our own values & actions; each of us is a complex control system of goals, priorities, & standards. Through this control system we seek various responses from the world: food, a job, prestige, love. When different elements of the control system come into conflict with each other, they produce both wanted & unwanted responses. The result is stress. Though we see stress as caused by these negative events, people, feelings, & situations, they & the stress they induce are only responses to our own actions. And we have dominion over them. Freedom from Stress reads like a novel & delivers on the promise in its title. Here, Ford teaches us to use the exciting concepts of Control Theory to eliminate the causes of stress in our lives -- to achieve true Freedom from Stress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the movement of people to and from Liberia in the nineteenth century Established by the American Colonization Society in the early nineteenth century as a settlement for free people of color, the West African colony of Liberia is usually seen as an endpoint in the journeys of those who traveled there. In Atlantic Passages, Robert Murray reveals that many Liberian settlers did not remain in Africa but returned repeatedly to the United States, and he explores the ways this movement shaped the construction of race in the Atlantic world. Tracing the transatlantic crossings of Americo-Liberians between 1820 and 1857, in addition to delving into their experiences on both sides of the ocean, Murray discusses how the African neighbors and inhabitants of Liberia recognized significant cultural differences in the newly arrived African Americans and racially categorized them as “whites.” He examines the implications of being perceived as simultaneously white and Black, arguing that these settlers acquired an exotic, foreign identity that escaped associations with primitivism and enabled them to claim previously inaccessible privileges and honors in America. Highlighting examples of the ways in which blackness and whiteness have always been contested ideas, as well as how understandings of race can be shaped by geography and cartography, Murray offers many insights into what it meant to be Black and white in the space between Africa and America. Publication of the paperback edition made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book An Uncommon Reader

Download or read book An Uncommon Reader written by Helen Smith and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of The Sunday Times' (U.K.) Books of the Year "Garnett's life will not need to be written again." —Andrew Morton, Times Literary Supplement A penetrating biography of the most important English-language editor of the early twentieth century During the course of a career spanning half a century, Edward Garnett—editor, critic, and reader for hire—would become one of the most influential men in twentieth-century English literature. Known for his incisive criticism and unwavering conviction in matters of taste, Garnett was responsible for identifying and nurturing the talents of a generation of the greatest writers in the English language, from Joseph Conrad to John Galsworthy, Henry Green to Edward Thomas, T. E. Lawrence to D. H. Lawrence. In An Uncommon Reader, Helen Smith brings to life Garnett’s intimate and at times stormy relationships with those writers. (“I have always suffered a little from a sense of injustice at your hands,” Galsworthy complained in a letter.) All turned to Garnett for advice and guidance at critical moments in their careers, and their letters and diaries—in which Garnett often features as a feared but deeply admired protagonist—tell us not only about their creative processes, but also about their hopes and fears. Beyond his connections to some of the greatest minds in literary history, we also come to know Edward as the husband of Constance Garnett—the prolific translator responsible for introducingTolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov to an English language readership—and as the father of David “Bunny” Garnett, who would make a name for himself as a writer and publisher. “Mr. Edward Garnett occupies a unique position in the literary history of our age,” E. M. Forster wrote. “He has done more than any living writer to discover and encourage the genius of other writers, and he has done it without any desire for personal prestige.” An absorbing and masterfully researched portrait of a man who was a defining influence on the modern literary landscape, An Uncommon Reader asks us to consider the multifaceted meaning of literary genius.
