Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reprinted Glossaries, Vol. 1 His prefatory remarks cannot wholly be relied upon; even in dealing with the pronunciation of his own neighbourhood, he seems often to be at fault, partly, no doubt, from the common inability to express the sounds which he intended. Mr Ellis took considerable pains to ascertain his real meaning, but without much success. What is intended by the diphthong ea on p. 18 is indeed a puzzle whilst in the 'explanations' at p. 21, he talks of the aw in word, on which Mr Ellis remarks that aw ought to mean [sew], l but the example is utterly confusing, since word in S. Cleveland and the East Coast line is It is an additional difficulty that the author's remarks refer to the last century instead of to the present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reprinted Glossaries I hope that such readers as may be somewhat tired of seeing a continuation Of the Reprinted Glossaries will kindly take into account the great value they have for zealous and. Earnest students. With the present Part, we come almost to an end Of the more important of what may be called the minor Glossaries. Those who Wish to work at dialects can only be thankful for the time and expense saved by such reprints as are given in the present volume. The reader will find here collected all the dialectal words contained in no less than ten volumes, since Kennett's work (ed. 1818) is in two volumes, Britton's Beauties Of Wiltshire in three, and Glossary XIX. Also contains words from the Monthly Magazine for 1814. Little need be said here about the several Glossaries, as each has a brief Introduction of its own prefixed to it but I may add a few words as to the copies to which I had access. Provincialisms of East Yorkshire, by Mr. Marshall, 1788; III. Provincialisms of East Norfolk, by Mr. Marshall, 1787 Strange as this notion of our being all Welshmen may appear now, it was probably by no means peculiar to our Glossarist. This receives some illustration from the fact that, in the last century, we did not always call ourselves Englishmen, but often Britons, just as the Americans are commonly made to talk about Britishers and the British lion.' It is not worth while to multiply instances all can remember how Thomson declared that Britons never will be slaves, ' and how Campbell, in his stanzas on the threatened invasion in 1803, burst out with In a Briton's sweet home Shall a spoiler abide?' On the other hand, it is not improbable that the labours of the English Dialect Society may hereafter make it plain, that the amount of Welsh amongst our more homely words has been somewhat underrated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Dictionary of the English Language, Vol. 1: A Complete Encyclopedic Lexicon, Literary, Scientific, and Technological; A-Depascent As a Literary Dictionary it is intended to supply a key to the written works in the language, and an aid to the use of the language itself, by registering and explain ing the various meanings which are or have been attached to words by writers both new and old, by explaining idiomatic phrases and peculiar constructions, by distinguish ing obsolete from current meanings and usages, and by carefully distinguishing between words closely synonymous in signification. And as the real meanings of words and the grammatical constructions into which they enter are generally most clearly shown by means of illustrative quotations, vast numbers of these are given, many thousands of them being inserted in the present edition for the first time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary, Vol. 1: Or Collection of Words, Phrases, Names, and Allusions to Customs, Proverbs, Etc Robert Nares, the author of the following Glossary, was during his whole life an active man of letters, though the great mass of his labours have not left any very permanent mark on the literature of his day. He was born at York on the 9th of June, 1753, and was the son of Dr. James Naves, the celebrated composer and teacher of music, and organist to George II and George III. The Doctor's brother, and the uncle of Robert Nares, was sir George Nares, who sat during fifteen years on the bench of Common Pleas. Robert Nares received his first education in Yestminster School, where, in 1767, at the early age of fourteen, he was at the head of his election as king's scholar. In 1771, he was elected to a studentship of Christ Church, Oxford, where he took his bachelors degree in 1775, and his masters degree in 1778, and entered holy orders. From 1779 to 1783, he held the situation of tutor to the two Wynns (sir Watkin and Charles Williams), residing with them at Wynnstay, and during the season in London. During this period he wrote prologues, epilogues, and light pieces, for the private dramatic fetes at Wynnstay, as well as a considei-able number of essays on various subjects for periodicals. In 1782, Christ Church presented him with the small living of Easton Mawdit in Northamptonshire, and soon afterwards he received that of Doddington from the lord Chancellor, In 1784, Nares published his first philological work, the 'Elements of Orthoepy.' The same year he married Elizabeth Bayley, the youngest daughter of Thomas Bayley, of Chelmsford, who died in child-bed in 1785. He resumed his connection with the Wynns from 1786 to 1788, while his pupils were at Westminster School, and he acted as assistant-preacher at Berkeley Chapel. In 1787, he was appointed chaplain to the duke of York, and in the year following he was chosen assistant-preacher to the Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn, a post which he held during fifteen years. He had now become the centre of a large circle of friends and acquaintances, by whom he was respected not only as a gentleman and scholar but as a sound divine and sincere Christian, and to whom he was endeared by many social qualities; and he produced a considerable number of political as well as other essays and pamphlets. Download or read book The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Harold Felix Baker Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary, Vol. 1 It is amazing how one's fund of knowledge will gradually but unfailingly be enriched in this way, and it is no less amazing how frequently one is called upon to refer to such a work, even if only a working knowledge of a language is desired. In the course of our every-day conversa tion we make use of words that are, naturally, familiar to us; but in the course of our daily reading, how often do we meet with words that are unfamiliar P It may be that some of these words, as words, are known to us, yet we do not fully appreciate their meaning, or their different meanings for many words possess a number of meanings - nor would we know exactly how, where, or when to use these words if we wished to include them in our conversation or our writings. Pronunciation, too, we may find another barrier difficult to overcome, and this may well be so, considering that in very many instances there is a difference of opinion even among authorities on the English language as to the way in which certain words should be pronounced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers a collection of reprints on the Hubbard Model. The major contributions to the subject since its origin are included, with the aim of providing all scientists working on the model and its applications with easy access to the relevant literature. The book is divided into five parts. The introductory part is concerned with the physical origin and motivations of the model, and contains a collection of mainly historical papers. The remaining four sections are intended to present a coherent scenario of the different approaches to the model solution: exact and rigorous statistical mechanics results; variational methods; perturbative approaches; numerical Quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization studies. Among the applications special emphasis is given to high-Tc superconductivity. Each section is preceded by commentary notes from the editor.
