Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Clevelanders: A Biographical Directory of Leading Men and Women in Present Day Cleveland Community The press of Cleveland, daily, weekly and metropolitan, will find "Representative Clevelanders" especially helpful on many points of importance and interest. Errors easily occurring in hasty writing or hurried preparation may be obviated to a degree by use of the compiled data which is in a standardized type form and style. Restrictions to accomplish uniformity may be misunderstood in some instances but the practicability of the form adopted will be apparent in usage. Libraries in Cleveland as well as in many other cities early signified their desire to have the book on their shelves. As this volume makes its appearance Cleveland stands on the threshold of a new advance in industry and transportation. When it is considered that ten million passengers or nearly one-tenth of the total population of the country are carried every year by steam railways, interurbans and busses in and out of the city, and that sixteen million tons of freight are hauled in by rail carriers annually, part of which is consumed and the remainder of which is manufactured into millions of tons of cargoes for outgoing shipments, one can realize more fully the urgent need of enlarged fact and figure references. Publications generally now concern themselves not so much about abstract affairs as about persons, who they are, what they are doing, where they came from and how they succeeded. Increasing importance of Cleveland as a financial center also emphasizes the increased necessity of accurate vital statistical records for use of banks and business houses. Since the Federal Reserve system was inaugurated in 1914, resources of the member banks in the fourth district, of which Cleveland is the center, have more than tripled, now totaling close to four billion dollars. But more important than banking figures or transportation or manufacturing prestige is the growth of Cleveland's civic spirit before which the provincialism of olden days has been forced to bow, and to which this work is dedicated. To those who responded courteously to this enterprise and with an understanding such as moved them to act for mutual community advantage, we express our feeling of gratitude. No doubt, as time goes on there will be necessity of revision and in order to assure of this we will later invite suggestions for improvement or advice as to changes in biographical data, changes of address or of business associations, and especially notices of deaths. Book The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger Volume 4

Download or read book The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger Volume 4 written by Margaret Sanger and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Margaret Sanger returned to Europe in 1920, World War I had altered the social landscape as dramatically as it had the map of Europe. Population concerns, sexuality, venereal disease, and contraceptive use had entered public discussion, and Sanger's birth control message found receptive audiences around the world. This volume focuses on Sanger from her groundbreaking overseas advocacy during the interwar years through her postwar role in creating the International Planned Parenthood Federation. The documents reconstruct Sanger's dramatic birth control advocacy tours through early 1920s Germany, Japan, and China in the midst of significant government and religious opposition to her ideas. They also trace her tireless efforts to build a global movement through international conferences and tours. Letters, journal entries, writings, and other records reveal Sanger's contentious dealings with other activists, her correspondence with the likes of Albert Einstein and Eleanor Roosevelt, and Sanger's own dramatic evolution from gritty grassroots activist to postwar power broker and diplomat. A powerful documentary history of a transformative twentieth-century figure, The Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger, Volume 4 is a primer for the debates on individual choice, sex education, and planned parenthood that remain all-too-pertinent in our own time.

Book Lucean Arthur Headen

Download or read book Lucean Arthur Headen written by Jill D. Snider and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Carthage, North Carolina, Lucean Arthur Headen (1879–1957) grew up amid former slave artisans. Inspired by his grandfather, a wheelwright, and great-uncle, a toolmaker, he dreamed as a child of becoming an inventor. His ambitions suffered the menace of Jim Crow and the reality of a new inventive landscape in which investment was shifting from lone inventors to the new "industrial scientists." But determined and ambitious, Headen left the South, and after toiling for a decade as a Pullman porter, risked everything to pursue his dream. He eventually earned eleven patents, most for innovative engine designs and anti-icing methods for aircraft. An equally capable entrepreneur and sportsman, Headen learned to fly in 1911, manufactured his own "Pace Setter" and "Headen Special" cars in the early 1920s, and founded the first national black auto racing association in 1924, all establishing him as an important authority on transportation technologies among African Americans. Emigrating to England in 1931, Headen also proved a successful manufacturer, operating engineering firms in Surrey that distributed his motor and other products worldwide for twenty-five years. Though Headen left few personal records, Jill D. Snider recreates the life of this extraordinary man through historical detective work in newspapers, business and trade publications, genealogical databases, and scholarly works. Mapping the social networks his family built within the Presbyterian church and other organizations (networks on which Headen often relied), she also reveals the legacy of Carthage's, and the South's, black artisans. Their story shows us that, despite our worship of personal triumph, success is often a communal as well as an individual achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 1920s, a few Cleveland women perceived a need for reliable birth control. They believed that health and social service professionals denied women, especially poor and working-class women, critical health care information. Any Friend of the Movement tells the story of these women, their actions, and the organization they created - the direct forerunner of a modern Planned Parenthood affiliate. The disparate threads of this particular tale include the suicide of a pregnant woman, the gift of a bereaved inventor, smuggling contraceptive supplies across state lines, and sponsoring ice skating galas to fund the work." "Any Friend of the Movement breaks new ground in the history of birth control activism in North America. Meyer argues that private philanthropy and voluntary action on the part of clinics like the Maternal Health Association (MHA) and their clients vitalized the larger movement at its roots and pushed it forward."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Clevelanders: A Biographical Dictionary of Living Men of the City of Cleveland From time to time ephemeral publications spring up pretending to add to biographical literature sketches of "leading" and "prominent" men - for a consideration. There is no limit to this form of exploitation on the one hand and vanity on the other. Meanwhile the main object of any such attempt, the setting forth of the facts, without comment, is lost and with it whatever value might otherwise attach to the print. This is the first book of its kind published in Cleveland for Clevelanders. That it is no larger is due to the modesty of hundreds of men who have refrained from filling up the inquiry blanks sent them lest their motive be misunderstood. To this cause must be ascribed the absence from the pictorial pages of many photographs of men whose biographical sketches are here included. The book has been confined to living subjects because it is intended to make this a current publication, dealing with current matters. Other publications are available for historical purposes. Moreover, its main purpose was to offer a list of the younger men - the men who are making the Greater Cleveland-to-come, rather than their elders. No attempt has been made to select for the purposes of this publication any class of men, beyond the thought that they should represent the city of today. No space for any purpose has been sold in this book. The remarks following each name are autobiographical. Not a word has been added and except for unimportant changes affecting the phraseology employed, every man's description is his own. Too many have modestly declined to enter as fully into their achievements as the publishers might have wished. But while the comment, here and there, may seem brief, it was deemed best to adhere to truth and facts, no matter how briefly stated, than to err on the other side. Nothing more is claimed for this volume than accuracy and dependability as to the sketches included. Another issue may induce co-operation by many others whose names are among the missing.
